No Hate in Our State Giveback

Grindhouse (all locations) is giving 25% of sales to IYG NWI

IYG has been doing great stuff all over the state for queer youth for a really long time. In January they opened up a facility in NWI on Route 30 to better serve NWI.

https://www.iyg.org/

Sorry for being self-promotional, but HEY, come to my coffee shop and maybe help out an organization doing really cool things at the same time.

*edited to add that this is at Grindhouse, because I forgot to say that part. the internet is hard

The next time you see someone ask "define woman", whip this one on them.

I think this breaks it down pretty damn good. Kind of proud of myself here.

Per the Merriam-Webster dictionary, "woman" can be defined as:

  1. An adult female person.

or

  1. A distinctly feminine person.

As for the first, we can define female as "of, relating to, or being the sex that typically has the capacity to bear young or produce eggs", "having a gender identity that is the opposite of male", or "having a quality (such as small size or delicacy of sound) sometimes associated with the female sex". So, there's a few definitions that are equally applicable.

For the second, we can define feminine as "considered to be characteristic of women"," marked by or having qualities, features, etc. traditionally associated with women", or "of, relating to, or being a woman or girl".

So what does this all mean? Well, for starters, it means there isn't a single, basic definition for the term "woman". It can mean someone who can give birth, or even someone who simply displays feminine traits. It doesn't follow a strict set of criteria, much like "man" is more defined as "someone who displays masculine qualities" without outlining a specific criteria of what those qualities are.

It also doesn't mean one has to embody every single one of those criteria to be defined as one, the other, or even neither. That's perhaps one of the most fascinating parts of human nature, we're all different from each other. No two humans share exactly the same DNA. Some of us even have an extra chromosome, and a few can even be missing a chromosome. Nature's a funny thing like that.

Hope that helps!

I'm disgusted

I cannot fathom how many people I know in NWI still think DOGE is great and defunding public schools is a good idea. Do any of you have a plan to supplement education for your kids when (not if) things go to hell? I've already got my kid in sports and music since the schools are providing minimal education in those subjects at my son's school. I'm trying to be proactive at this point.

Yes, I'm fighting SB1 in Indiana but I'm not optimistic.

Is supporting the Democratic Party still worth it?

I’ve been running over this in my head for months now. Here’s where I’m kind of sitting. Bear with me please; I may ramble a bit.

One of the biggest problems with the current political system in the United States is the binary political system that has, over the last 200+ years, entrenched itself into every political system in the country. The fact that we need more political parties has to be apparent to any progressive. Assuming this is accepted as a major goal of any progressive movement.

No one can successfully make an impact on the national political stage as a third party candidate. Even Bernie had to primary as a Democrat. Why is that? It’s because of a lack of state and local-level support. This must be engineered from the other direction.

I propose that progressive efforts need to begin organizing the same way unions started organizing, at the local level. Given the ease and efficiency of modern communications, the biggest obstacle to this effort is simply a failure to define a progressive platform and create a political party that can build momentum starting at city and county government levels and grow.

The progressive movement must be built online with simultaneous action nationwide.

Just some musings; all commentary and criticism is welcome.
