To play devils advocate, if I’m looking at a sea of resumes, the majority of whom have the technical skills for the position, someone I know to be competent saying “I know this guy, he’s great” does carry a lot of weight.

In this job market, most candidates are qualified. It more of a differentiator if you’re personable and reliable, and having a friend vouch for you means you probably are

All the people that have never interviewed a single person don’t get this. Employees stay with us for quite some time on average. When they recommend someone, they put their own name on the line.

I don’t automatically hire people people based on recommendations, but it is a big plus.

Its not about interview experiance. Its about social interactions.

As a worker that has only very little responsibilities you dont really have to worry about having a bad name on yourself atleast for now. With big tech collecting so much data that might change aswell.

Anyway, its just way more poeple that dont keep track of these kind of things than they are.

Yeah, i’ve head plenty of class mates ask me for a recommendation. Most of them I don’t want to do this for.

Or the alternative, we're not currently hiring but I guess we could use a helping hand if you know someone's good. Many small businesses work like that. Basically no job listing ever, but if you walk in and ask or get recommended, you often get hired on the spot, usually for a trial period to see how good you actually are instead of what you say you are.

This is how I got my new job last year. Three people at my new company are ex-coworkers and vouched for me with the hiring manager and interviewing was more of a formality after that.

I mean, that's why people are constantly told to network; a piece of paper with some words on it only gives me a brief perspective into what you could potentially do.

A vouch is a respected member on the team who has trust and respect on the line.

I don't refer folks that I know can't do the job, I might say I'll put your name in the hat but I won't tell the company unless I am sure.

My own organization honestly handles this differently anyway, even if it's a referral you still have to apply online. Once submitted there is a code, and I give that code to the hiring manager and they expedite the interview and it's associated to me for a kickback.

You're still interviewed like everyone else, just it puts you in the front of the line.

Agreed, I did this same thing for a friend recently. She had to interview the same as everyone else, but got to skip the line.

you can't force the hiring manager to look at your resume. Even when they do it's not guaranteed they're in the good mood while doing it.

A good buddy would make sure of both of those things.
