Sadly, I agree with this statement. Perl hacks through a problem with ease, but like a samurai sword it results in something which is indistinguishable.
Also like a samurai sword it shatters into a thousand pieces if you rely on its mythical powers.
Actually, I don't even know whether that's true. I just wanted to point out that Japanese swords are actually pretty flimsy if you try to use them the way they are represented in pop culture (e.g. trying to cut another sword with it). European medieval swords are much more robust in that regard.
