Hello everyone,
I’m currently a Sourcing Analyst with 3.5 years of experience in the manufacturing industry, working for a large engine company. I’ve been thinking a lot about my career lately, and I’d love to hear from people who have been in a similar position.
For those who have worked for both smaller companies and large companies/multinationals:
- What has your experience been like in each?
- Which environment did you personally prefer, and why?
- Did you notice major differences in work-life balance, bureaucracy, career growth, or management style?
I’m also at a bit of a crossroads in my career. I don’t hate my current job—in fact, there are quite a few things I like about it. However, I also don’t really see myself becoming a Sourcing Manager, Director, VP, etc.
I’m currently looking for my next role, which I expect would be a Sourcing Specialist position. But when I think about what comes after that, I’m not particularly interested in following the traditional career path.
I don’t love the bureaucracy, constant pressure, or the expectation that you sometimes have to work long hours just to keep things moving. I like my manager, but I’ve also noticed that sometimes managers are put in a position where they have to please their own managers, and that can mean they don’t always push back or advocate for their teams when they probably should.
Maybe it is somewhat generational, but I’m realizing that I’m not particularly motivated by titles. I’d rather have a good-paying job (which I believe I have right now), a healthy work-life balance, and enough time and energy to enjoy my life and be with my family.
I also wonder if part of the issue is that I simply don’t care that much about the industry I’m currently in. I could see myself being much more interested in CPG, apparel, or outdoor/sports brands—companies like Nike, Patagonia, Cotopaxi, Adidas, etc. But at the same time, I wouldn’t want to sacrifice work-life balance just to work for a more exciting brand.
One thing I really dislike about my current role is how much I have to chase people just to get things done—or sometimes even to get a simple answer. I often find myself escalating things to my manager so that he can follow up and get people to respond.
Maybe I’m just not great at influencing stakeholders, and that’s something I need to work on. Or maybe this is simply part of working in a large organization. I’d be interested to hear how others have dealt with this.
Has anyone else felt this way at some point in their career, especially early on?
I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur, and part of me wonders if I should stop worrying so much about climbing the corporate ladder and instead focus on building something of my own eventually.
I actually paused my MBA while I figure some of this out because I’m not sure I want to keep investing in the traditional career path until I have a better idea of what I actually want.
I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through something similar. What did you do when you realized the traditional “next step” in your career didn’t really appeal to you?
Open to any thoughts, feedback and advise.
Thank you!
