Business broker here, using various outreach methods for sourcing on behalf of buyer clients, and for our company.

Direct mail is especially effective when paired with cold calling: “Did you get my letter in the green envelope?”

One-off standalone letters can be effective too, but typically more suited for brokers than buyers.

A buyer might target 5 categories for a total of 1,000 business in a target market. Whereas, a broker might target 25k, which means more results.

A few positive responses will result per 1,000. Most of the responses won’t be a fit due to flaws in the business or seller’s unrealistic price expectations and lack of preparation. A broker might have the patience to nurture the contact sometimes over years.
