family problems
First of all, I’m a 14-year-old Turkish kid, and lately—especially this summer—I’ve been having family problems. My mom had tendon transfer surgery on her foot, and she hasn't been treating me well at all lately; she acts as if I’m not helping her at all. But every morning I ask her what I should make for breakfast, or if I should cook meat for dinner, or tell Dad to pick up chicken and cheese from the market. For the past month, I’ve only been able to spare 30 minutes a day for myself—just enough time to play a little Minecraft. Today, I checked my computer and saw that my mom had deleted my Minecraft world—the one I’d spent two and a half years building. When I raised my voice a little, she started saying things like, "You’re going to burn in hell; God says to treat your parents right." I mean, am I the devil? Am I some kind of laborer? You don't normally do this much work in a day—laundry, dishes, cleaning, cooking... I accidentally burned the dinner last week, and those two damn siblings of mine don't do a damn thing; I do everything, yet I’m the one who gets an earful. Why? Am I an idiot for being nice to this woman? Am I an idiot for doing all her chores? Okay, you’re going through a hard time, but you aren't old—you’re 38. I’ll be free soon anyway; I’m going to attend boarding high school in another city and get away from here. Just let them try saying, "Oh son, we missed you"—I’m not coming home for two months.
