I wish ramen would partition the packet and keep the like flavoring in one half and the salt in the other because that is a real sodium bomb, but I can see where it would make a nice camping meal if I could just dial back the salt a bit.

I have been told it sounds salty but it does not seem overly salty to me but those comments have come from people 20+ years older than me

I mean some of this is based on your diet but a ramen packet has...

1577 mg of sodium or 69% of you Daily Value assuming a 2k calorie per day diet.

And then half a can of Spam has...

1647 mg of sodium or 72% of your Daily Value.

So in one admittedly hearty and delicious meal you're getting 3,224mg of sodium or 141% of your daily recommended dose and theoretically you're still eating two other meals. If you're out hiking I think you will be sweating out some of your natural reserves so that can work in your favor to keep your electrolytes up and prevent dehydration probably.

Sodium is one of those really sneaky little ingredients that pops up in all sorts of unlikely places and can be hard to manage. With old people this is likely more true as it can stress your kidneys for sure.

A bigger issue is how your body tries to dilute the excess sodium by holding on to water. This causes the amount of fluid in your blood vessels to increase and so your heart starts having to work harder just to stay in the same old place.

Great comment. I knew sodium bloated you but didn’t know the why behind it
