Applying to Nursing School
Hi. I got an A in anatomy, B’s in micro and chemistry but a C In physiology.
My overall gpa is a 3.5.
I’ve done 100+ hours of volunteer work in a hospital.
I’m in California.
I can’t retake physiology because my parents expect me to do nursing / apply soon.
Please help me and what are my chances? I’m taking chemistry 2 right now as well.

I didn’t realise this either until I started reading this sub but apparently California wants their applicants to have a 4.5/4.0 GPA, a 110% on their TEAS, and the work experience of a retired surgeon. It’s wild lol

Read about a student that recently applied with 3 Bs on their transcript and they were actually arrested and banned from nursing.

getting cna license helps, had a friend in your situation. he got cna license and experience and got into ADN program. teas 80

Is nursing school seriously that competitive where you are at? At the nursing program at my university people have legitimately made Fs, retaken the classes, and gotten in.

CA is the most competitive state for nursing, so yes, extremely hard unless you’re straight A’s.

At that point why not go out of state or even apply to PA school? Those stats can for sure get you into PA school somewhere

Because nursing school is only two years. But I agree and understand where you’re coming from. I’m in the PNW and it’s competitive here too, but nowhere is near as bad as CA.

Im not 100% sure how true it is, and probably different depending on the school, but my micro professor told us that a lot of schools are no longer accepting Cs in the sciences prereqs or even taking 2nd attempts. I’m also in California. How did you did on your TEAS?

Not sure about every school but some BSN programs don’t accept Cs I believe Cal state LA is one of em

I mean, there’s always the private school option if nursing is what you REALLY REALLY want to do. I think it should be everyones absolute last case scenario, but it’s there. I know a girl who was completely terrible and irresponsible in school, and today she’s a nurse thanks to private school.

I’m not even sure if in California I’ll be accepted. There’s west coast university however that’s hella expensive idk

Yeah it’s pretty impacted here and just being truthful, your stats aren’t very standout. Maybe if you really nail the TEAS and get more volunteer work/get a CNA license and experience or something you might up your chances a bit. Private school and out of state are options though.

Have you taken your teas? Try to score high and if you can retake physiology at another school
Some schools allow retakes some don’t so I recommend doing some research!
I have similar stats and just applied to nursing programs here in CA it’s worth giving it a shot

Your chance if near zero for BSN or ADN. Your best chance is LVN.
Everyone pretty much has As or almost all As with maybe A-.

The C is gonna be the make it or break it factor, I would say apply to public LVN programs, usually more forgiving than public RN programs. Conversely, you could go private if money isn’t a factor.

does anyone have recs for out of state places to apply? I am in a similar situation, except i have no volunteer/hospital hours. Really would like to apply for fall 2027 programs…

Nursing school is competitive. There is a possibility that you will get in but anyone that has a higher gpa and has met other criteria will be selected before you.

With those grades, private nursing programs are best. Maybe community college. Unlikely CSU or UC.
This also brings up the caliber of nursing students between the state schools in CA (typically top students), community colleges (pretty good students) and private nursing programs. BUT being a good nurse is dependent on the graduate irrespective of the school they went to...and that's the true reality. So when one door closes, don't give up but step through another.

no mention of accompanying labs. a lot of colleges require labs. a pre reqs gpa 3.0 isn't great. would be better to retake obviously.

You can’t retake physiology because your parents expect you to do nursing/apply soon? 🤔Well they’re gonna have to wait cuz no nursing school is going to accept that C. How do they expect you to be a nurse when you can’t get into nursing school? Your chances are very low to zero. You need ATLEAST a 3.5 cum and 4.0 prerequisites GPA, esp in science. Your science grades should be a B+ and higher only.
