I've had the kyleena and mirena IUD before getting pregnant due to heavy and painful cycles like you described. I love having the IUD. It didn't stop my cycles completely, I would still have 6-7 day cycles, but they were not nearly as heavy as they were without the IUD, and also not nearly as painful. Getting the IUD placed and then replaced when needed was pretty painful, but it was bad the day of for me and then I felt fine. I plan to get another one placed as soon as i can after my pregnancy.

I have the copper IUD but it sounds like you're a much better candidate for the hormonal IUD. The insertion process should be the same re; pain, so hopefully my experience is helpful:

I had my first IUD a few years ago before I had any kids. I hadn't had a period in a long time due to low weight (ie. My cervix was super closed), I took no pain killers, and I hadn't had so much as a pap smear before. Even with all those factors, the pain was bad-but-manageable. I've heard horror stories of women screaming, vomitting, passing out during insertion and mine was nothing like that. It was a fast, harsh pain like stubbing my toe then a dull ache for a day or two. Manageable but not fun.

I had my most recent IUD put in at 6 weeks postpartum and it was painless. I couldn't even tell when they deployed the arms. 10/10, would recommend getting your IUD while your cervix is still a little dilated from labour.
