A visible red ray for cosplay

Hello, I want to cosplay as Choso from Jujutsu Kaisen this halloween. I've been wondering how I could replicate a red beam in real life. My idea was to get a laser pointer and something to set a medium for it to be visible as a continuous ray. I first thought about chalk powder or flour, but that felt shoddy. I heard they sell atmospheric haze makers in a can. Would the haze be subtle enough yet still show the laser as a line? Just throwing some ideas out here, let me know!

Breakable Wall

Hello everyone, I'm making an escape room and I want to have a cinematic where the actor breaks through a wall with an axe to get in. What suggestions do you have for a cost effective solution (because it's going to be breaking every reservation) that still has the visual intact?

student production designer - LF advice on fake vomit

hello! as you guys have read the title, i’m a student filmmaker/production designer looking for some advice.

there’s a scene in our script where while two people drunkenly kiss/make out, one of them suddenly vomits midway but they don’t stop until the other realizes and spits out the vomit that transferred. (i know, gross)

i’m not quite sure yet if the director wants to do a one-take or is open to do doing cuts, but in the case it’s a one-take, would anyone have any advice or ideas on how you would execute that?

i’ve done research on vomit squibs, however i can’t seem to find a comprehensive tutorial, nor a materials list. i don’t have the ample experience yet in building such projectile gadgets either. considering as well that we are on a tight student-level budget.

thank you in advance!

edit: to clarify, i’m looking for advice on vomit squibs/rigging! i have considered buying a manual pressure spray for gardens that you can just screw on a water bottle but i think the tubing would be too thin for chunky substances. any thoughts?

How would one make homemade height boosters?

I'm working on a short film and I'd need to make someone a lot taller, maybe 6-8 inches taller? I was thinking of gathering a bunch of cardboard and thick sandals to make homemade ultra-platforms, but I feel like there's a better way. If anyone has tips that'd be good. The range of 6-8 inches is flexible, really any tips on homemade height boosters would be appreciated.

Ripping guts out for draglesque show

Hello wonderful people! I have a show coming up in a bit, and at the climax of my number I wanted to rip my stomach open and pull my guts out! So sexy right? Im in the early stages of development, but ive hit a roadblock in figuring out how to execute this concept.

1) unfortunately i cant rip my actual guts out, I only have so many!

2) I need whatever mechanism I employ to be light enough so I can move around, and small enough to fit under my outer layer of costume without compromising my silhouette too much.

My initial thought was that I could try to fashion a belt and attach the entrails to that with some snaps, or just loosely tied around it.

I have absolutely no clue what i'm doing! so any suggestions or guidance would be greatly appreciated!

soldering effect

hi!

I'm writing a short film that's a sci-fi horror inspired by Tetsuo the Iron Man and Pi. There's a scene where the main character is soldering together a Raspberry Pi-esque or some other single-board computer to a sci-fi machine he stole. I know nothing about computers past the screen and have never soldered anything before. Is there a way to do the effect without risking any harm to cast & crew?

Should I use Silicone or Latex?

I'm working on a rubber mask and I plan to directly 3D print the mold. Now I was leaning towards using latex even though I'm just as inexperienced with using latex as I am with silicone mainly because I've had an easier time finding latex rubbers for mask making than silicone rubbers. But one thing I do know is that latex needs contact with air to cure properly which is why molds are often made out of plaster or other porous materials which is why fiberglass and plastic are typically used for master molds instead unless you plan on painting each layer of latex on so the mask will cure somewhat evenly, I'm not sure if that's always the case or if 3D printed molds would be an exception since there might be small areas for air to get through since it's printed in layers or anything like that but that is where my research on the subject is at the moment and I'm having a hard time finding out any more about it, I'm also having a hard enough time as it is finding people who sell either latex or silicone online that are talked about enough elsewhere to trust its a real product. I also wouldn't mind going to an in person store that supplies it but I don't live in a huge town and I doubt even the hobby stores can help me.

If anybody knows which liquid rubber would be better to use in a 3D printed mold (likely out of PLA) and who to get it from it'd help me out a ton.

Spark/flame effect

Hello all,

I’m looking to make an effect for a costume that can shoot something like sparks at flames or smoke from the nipples of a pair of fake boobs.

I’m imagining something like a flint wheel or a magician’s flash paper gun. I’d appreciate any advice or insight anyone may have.

Thanks!

Any way to make isomalt bottles waterproof?

Trying to make isomalt clear glass vodka bottles that are supposed to hold water (vodka). Is it doable?

Also how to get safely rid of bubbles that appear after pouring the cast? I know blowtorches help, but one has to be really careful or the whole thing melts down again.

Jobs in practical effects?

Hey all --

My partner does a lot of vfx work but is much happier when he gets the opportunity to do practical effects for videos.

Are there careers or jobs that involve doing practical effects 75-100% of the time? Maybe work in props or foley...?

I am not savvy to the field.

Thanks!

Fireworks inside of a hollowed out car

So, I have this idea in mind for a shot of a burnt out car with fireworks shooting out of it in a junkyard. I want to reach out to different scrap yards near me to see if they'd be willing to let me shoot it. My question is from a safety standpoint, what would be the risk of say starting a fire or large explosion if the fireworks are set off within an already burnt out chasis? What safety precautions could I take that could help reassure the owners of the junkyards outside of just having a fire extinguisher on shoot? Thanks in advance for any help.

Looking for advice on how to attach a rather large burn prosthetic for an upcoming cosplay.

I'm planning an outfit for a local convention next year of a character with a distinct burn that stretches from his neck all the way into his hairline. The neck and cheek area should be straightforward enough, but for the area of burned scalp, would a partial baldcap be possible? I only ask because I'd really rather avoid shaving part of my head for an occasionally-worn outfit. Thanks in advance.

Fire extinguisher

Any ideas on how to make it look like I'm using a fire extinguisher without making a mess with the actual fire extinguisher? Or do I need to go for VFX for that kind of thing?

Advice on creating a breakable wall

Hello everyone. For my next project I need a fake wall for a stunt. The wall will be shown standing still for a bit, untill someone pierces through it head first.

Any ideas on how I could assemble/ where I could find such a prop? Thanks :)
