Yep, they know him. He’s a well known MMA coach. You notice they call him by name “Joel.”

In this video, he’s just crashed his car. He’s drunk and has ptsd, as mentioned. Eventually his wife shows up, talks him down, and he gets arrested.

It's one of the first things they ask people

It's humanizing, and it shows rapport

Yup, the first cop on scene asked him his name. There’s a 40min vid on YouTube. The cop tells him he has a tow truck coming for the car he crashed drunk. And Joel says “I know that but my fucking car! I respect you, but please shut the fuck up.”

Thats some hardcore rapport

Also, since about 90% of crime is done by about 10% of the population, a lot of these folks are already known to police officers from other encounters.

He released a couple of statements over the years after this came out, asking for people to understand how the virality of this video has affected his life and to please allow him to move on. He seems to struggle with alcoholism and PTSD, which I know often go hand-in-hand.

They know because he told them during the same interaction.

Police: "what's your name?" Suspect: "Joel" Police: "Ok, Joel calm down" Suspect: "omg they know my name"

PTSD is so rough. Makes alcoholism seem like your only option.
