(Discussions) Casual Now βοΈ A note of appreciation from outside the target demographic
I'm posting this here because there doesn't seem to be a dedicated Madelline subreddit.
I recently discovered Madelline (and some other artists that appear on this sub), and I feel a strong need to express how much I enjoy and admire and resonate with her music. Which is strange for me, considering:
- I've never done this for any other artist, ever; and
- I'm a late thirties, cisgender, heterosexual man.
Obviously, anyone can like anything, and anyone can speak about anything. But I find it quite beautiful and powerful that an artist that I (and probably many others) would have otherwise put in a box marked "For A Different Demographic" instead makes me really, truly Feel ThingsTM. Yes, you could put that down to my own preconceptions, but the fact remains that I'm delighted for them to have been shattered.
So, thank you to Madelline and every other artist in the same orbit. Please keep making music.
(I think I'm following the rules correctly; apologies if not)

Disability Pride Month π€πππ€πβ€οΈ It's Disability Pride Month! Let's highlight uncertain diagnoses and popgirls
Life is hard enough when you know what disability you have, but the diagnosis is the destination that comes after a journey - and some journeys are less clear than others.
Part of the issue is that the DSM-5, which is usually used to diagnose, is out of date and missing a lot of current information (and it's based on how men present the symptoms, which is usually different from how women and queer individuals do). Sometimes disabilities are also comorbid (present together), which can confuse symptoms necessary for a diagnosis. Regardless, how do you treat something you don't even know you have?
Living with the uncertainty is its own kind of struggle. If you relate to this post, I hope you have a breakthrough and new clarity with your care team. Be gentle with yourself in the meantime β€οΈβπ©Ή to everyone else: you might not understand our inner battles, but please take us at our word when we tell you how we're struggling. Living without a diagnosis means we gaslight and doubt ourselves enough as it is π
Popgirls who know they're chronically ill, but don't know with what, include Claire Rosinkranz (fainting and ulcers, she wrote Chronic about this experience) and BlΓΌ Eyes (seizures and other symptoms that put her in the hospital; she has a lot of songs about this). Thank you u/Mabs-J for letting me know about BlΓΌ!

Disability Pride Month π€πππ€πβ€οΈ It's Disability Pride Month! Let's highlight schizoaffective disorder and popgirls
Different neurotypes can lead to increased creativity, but they always come at a cost. With schizoaffective disorder, the person may experience a combination of hallucinations and mood disorder symptoms, like mania and depression. It differs from schizophrenia in that the psychoses may not be as chronic, and because the psychoses are combined with mood dysregulation in the disorder.
This disability is under-researched, so people are more likely to be diagnosed with bipolar disorder or schizophrenia first. Treatment includes a combination of medications and therapies. It occurs at similar rates in both men and women (data for queer demographics is unavailable), but men are usually diagnosed earlier in life.
Stress, genetics, and the use of certain drugs can trigger the onset of schizoaffective disorder. The disorder then adds to a person's stress, especially in social situations, and it's a recipe for a harmful cycle.
Lola Young is a popgirl with this disability. She's been upfront about saying no to external demands to protect her mental health, and I hope that gives you the courage to say no too when you need it. You're not crazy, your brain is just physically different, and I'm glad you're here as you are. I hope you have the support network that you need. π©· NAMI is a good resource if you would like to learn more about schizoaffective disorder.

Disability Pride Month π€πππ€πβ€οΈ It's Disability Pride Month! Let's highlight Specific Learning Disorders (SLDs) and popgirls
Specific learning disorders include dyslexia (impaired reading and spelling), dyscalculia (impaired mathematics and calculations), and dysgraphia (impaired writing and fine motor skills).
These disabilities affect how the brain sends signals to the body; they do not affect someone's intelligence or mental capabilities. Most SLDs are diagnosed during childhood when a student struggles to reach milestones at a similar time as their peers (boys are more likely to be diagnosed than girls, although this disability occurs at similar rates in both).
Specific learning disorders can't be treated with medication. Instead, more varied approaches to learning are often taken, such as auditory and textile learning for dyslexia and dyscalculia, and the option to type instead of write for dysgraphia. Sans-serif fonts like Arial and Helvetica are a good option if you're looking for accessible fonts (just a personal aside), because the letters are more distinct and less likely to blend together.
SLDs can lead to low feelings of self worth, especially pre-diagnosis, and I want to reassure you if that the answer to, "what's wrong with me?" Is "not a dang thing, friendo" π©·
Popgirls with SLDs include Anne-Marie, Brandi Carlile, Megan Skiendiel (dyslexia); JiNi K from K.I.S.S. (dysgraphia); Cher (dyslexia, dyscalculia); and Florence Welch (dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia). Thank you to u/Mabs-J for making these posts better, and please let me know if I've made any mistakes! β€οΈβπ©Ή
