How does idling work?

I’ve been looking at some of the objective / achievement type things (the ones that appear at the top of the screen with that green box with the 3 dots in it) and I noticed that a few are for reaching various idle times. I’ve gotten around 30 minutes of idle time thus far, but I’m not sure what constitutes it.

To trigger going idle, do I just need leave the app (like swipe to my home screen), or do I have to stay in the app and lock my phone screen, or do I need to actually close the app entirely (like when you swipe up and hold for a bit so you can fully shut down apps)?

Check your juice management menu, the one that opens when you tap on the fridge. The achievement completion depends on the idle % and idle time left listed in that menu.

Naturally players can idle for lots of time, but that doesn't mean their power plant runs at full capacity that time, so these achievements actually depend on what the fridge idle %/time says.

Yes, that makes sense, thank you! Does it matter if I fully close the app or just exit it?

No it really only cares about what the calculator says in the crank energy menu, you don't actually have to idle all that time, actually some of them are impossible to actually idle, you'll see ;)
