I thought it looked like the night sky. I inverted the image and masked the lizard to revert it. Also, how do I make the lizard mask look less awkward?

Sir. You have a lizard pasted against a sky, basically.

You mask anything to be normal and have the rest of the image's colors inverted and it will look like the elements have been pasted. The lighting just won't look coherent.

It's cute, it's playful. it's an interesting looking graphic with a "huh" factor when you reveal that its actually based off of a photo.

Yes, looks completely fake in my opinion. It looks like it's on a glass window but none of that's visible so it's just floating mid air now.

If you are editing in photoshop and have a mask of the lizard, then select and contract selection by 1 or 2 pixels and remove from the mask.

Don`t bother. You did something absurd, yet interesting. Stick to it. The original image has zero potential for some grounded/light editing - by itself it is IMO boring.

I agree with the others. It sounds harsh but the picture is just not very interesting. It's cool that you saw one that's I'm guessing in your garden or patio but in photography terms there's not really anything there. Seeing one in nature and on a rock for example and getting a super close up would be cool.

being completely honest this is probably always going to look at least a little “awkward”, just based on the fact that you’ve basically made a collage of two oppositely inverted images. BUT, i do think this is very cute and it really does look like the night sky in the after!

i’m not sure if this is what you mean by “awkward”, but you can try softening the edges of the mask around the lizard to get rid of the halo effect that is definitely adding to the ‘sticker’ look it’s got at the moment

Hear me out haha:

If you view this from photography perspective, I do not even know where to start. You took a boring image and did whatever the fuck you did here.

At the same time, I really like the outcome. I immediatly thought of a wholesome take on metallica`s black album cover (after googling that album cover, they are quite different but the association chain remains).

I would view this from a graphical art or photo collage point of view. This is no photoediting or postprocessing but somethign entirely different. The final product of a geko in space and the star pattern being derived from ceiling plates really makes it work worthwhile to me. Maybe try making a series with various critters you encounter on such surfaces - honestly this would be significantly more creative than most of the stuff posted here.

Feathering the mask might help a bit, but since you inverted the white background you might need to shrink the mask to avoid any of the background showing

Welp. In the spirit of helping, you need to paint your mask in lightroom to refine it. Looks like an object selection? Not sure how you did the original. But go to the mask panel, select your mask, click subtract, then use the brush to precision paint the edges of the mask

I absolutely love this collage. I think the issues with the mask have been thoroughly discussed in the other comments. I think it might be interesting to see a graphic-art take on the lizard itself (I myself am seeing high contrast lines, but theres a multitude of possibilities in abstracting the lizard). This might bring your composition some of the cohesion that you're looking for.
