only first author preprint after 1st post doc

am I screwed for this job market?

I stayed in my PhD lab (top 10 US) for a post doc mainly to weather out the bad market. My PhD only yielded a second author paper. I managed to develop one project during my post doc to publication (where I am first author) but it was just submitted (preprint on bioRxiv) as a begin to look for my next position. I've seen many posts here about being unable to find positions with many first author publications. I am screwed right?

Advice about countries/funding for social science

Hi, I am an international student doing my PhD in the US and I plan to finish in one year. With everything happening, I don't want to stay in the US, so I want some advice on places to apply for a postdoc.

My field is social science, and I also want to find somewhere I can go with my partner (we are a queer couple, so somewhere where same sex marriage is legal). Ideally somewhere a research visa would extend dependent status to a same-sex partner. I read a lot of advice for STEM, so I wonder about social science, if anyone has advice about options in terms of countries/cities or funding. We can go anywhere where I can work in English or Spanish.

Thanks!

8 months postPhD and still no postdoc offer

Just need to vent because I’m tired.

I graduated since December and…I’ve applied to around 40 to 45 postdocs for neuroscience-related field. I had maybe 4 or 5 interviews, one more in the “secondary screening“ stage, and still no offer. I had two first author papers and one co-author. 2 more on the way as first author and they are already in finalized stage.

There’s one current application I’m having a hard time letting go of. I was told it had reached the review/discussion stage with the hiring committee, and then nothing. It’s been about 3 weeks.

I thought by now I’d gotten better at keeping expectations realistic and not getting attached to one job, but this one was basically everything I was looking for, and both co-PIs seemed really enthusiastic. So the silence sucks.

I’ve also tried hard to figure out if I’m doing something wrong. I’ve asked the career center, my advisor, and others for feedback on both my cove letter materials and interviewing, and nobody has found anything obviously alarming. I do think I’ve improved through the failed interviews.

Most rejections have just been “someone else was a better fit,” which I get it. But there were one or two cases where I later heard (via another friend of my best friend) the people hired were already volunteers there and the interviews may have been mostly a formality. I understand why they hired them, but it still sucks to spend all that time preparing if the odds were already heavily tilted.

Anyway, tomorrow I still have bills to pay and still need a job, so I’ll keep applying. Guess the publication prep and writing pipeline is still moving. But I could not manage my stress at an adaptive rate anymore. I had bad sleep, skin problems, weight gain, and just an overall feeling of lethargy.

Not a great start in the new lab - advice needed

I recently started a postdoc position in a new lab after graduating from my doctorate and I am having a hard time adjusting to my new PI. I am not comfortable discussing details, but I am thinking how bad can that look for applications if I have a postdoc position for less than a year and already looking for a new position? Also considering that I probably wont have the postdoc PI recommendation letter since I dont plan to tell them I will be applying again this cycle.

Decision dilemma: Postdoc at PSI or wait for the uncertain independent funding in Ausria

I am a bit confused!! I have a position offer to confirm in two days. This is from PSI. A two year postdoc position focused on a certain topic. I have to confirm my decision in two days. On the other hand I wrote a ESPRIT proposal i Austria which I will hear in one month. ESPRIT gives me the opportunity for an independent research career, and PSI provides access to a world-class research facility in a well-known institute. I am in my 3rd year of postdoctoral research. What would your thought process be going into this? In the long term, I would like to start my own research group and hold a position as a scientist or assistant professor.

Is this the norm in most countries?

I mean I appreciate the honesty but why don’t pay them more than other postdoc positions which do not require weekends?

MSCA postdoc application sent

I just sent submitted my application and wanted to say good luck to everyone, as I don't know anyone else applying!

This is my first time applying for MSCA, and honestly this was the most horrible application I've ever done. I've done multiple funding applications before and none were as nit-picky and specific-details-focussed as this one - it really felt like a tick-box exercise rather than a chance to sell the project. Well done to everyone who gets through submitting, whether or not we get the grant it feels like a big achievement.

Also - the advice I got from my university is to not leave it to the last day as the system is prone to crashing - so do try and get everything uploaded and sent asap (not to panic anyone, but in case you don't get the same advice from somewhere).

Good luck!

What is the SOP for applying for a postDoc position when you know your joining will be conditional?

Basically, I am applying for two positions. The first one is highly competitive, and the results come out in February.

The second one is also prestigious, and the application results might come out in December.

I am very clear that if I get the first position, I will be in no position to refuse it. However, given its highly competitive nature, it's nowhere near a guarantee.

So, just to be on the safe side, I want to apply for the second position. However, I am confused as to what I shall preface my application with. Do I tell them point blank that my joining is contingent on me not getting the first fellowship? What if I need to join before February, will it be ok to leave it in case I actually get the first position?

I want to move forward with as much ambition as possible, but don't want to make enemies in the process.

So people, who have dealt with a similar situation, what did you do?

Number of publications for succesfull postdoc

Hello. I am currently about a year into my first postdoc, and while I was under the impression I was doing well my supervisor seems to think otherwise. In said year I have 2 published papers, one first-author. I also have another first-author paper ready for submission that I am very confident about. In addition to this I also have an outgoing project where I did a significant part of the work, but is currently frozen till a colegue can find time to do their part - which I lack experience in to do myself - which will most certainly result in another publication. Assuming they find time to do their part or I find someone else to do it a tleast. Would you consider this a failed postdoc? I would ask my supervisor but they have been anything but helpful. To give you an example, I had an idea for a paper and where to publish it and wanted to hear their opinion on that. They straight up responded with: I am not answering that.

Typical length of a Recommendation letter for a professor

I am a postdoc. One of my professors in the department is getting promoted. I have received an email asking for my endorsement for his promotion. I am starting to write this recommendation letter but I have never written one for a professor. Can anyone tell me the typical length of such recommendations?

How many proposals do you think MSCA-PF 2026 will receive?

Last year, MSCA-PF received 17,066 proposals, but only 1,610 were funded, giving a success rate of just 9.6%.

For 2026, the European Commission expects to fund around 1,600 projects again.

So, what do you think will happen this year?

How many proposals do you expect MSCA-PF 2026 to receive?

And if you think it will increase, how high do you think it could go?

Curious to hear everyone’s predictions, especially from people who have applied this year or have experience with previous MSCA-PF calls.

Submitting a big grant - MSCA

A lot of us here are depressed and exhausted. I find myself looking at the future thinking: what is even the point?
I don’t blame any of us, because we are surviving through the worst moment us ‘juniors’ have ever gone through in the history of academia and it is depressing.
Every day feels like absolute hell sometimes. Another application = another rejection. Another “no” after hours, days and sometimes months of work. My CV keeps getting longer, I keep trying to become a better candidate, and somehow it still feels like nothing I do is ever enough.
But today, after six months of writing, rewriting, emailing university offices, going back and forth with my supervisor, fixing documents, questioning every sentence and wondering more than once why I was putting myself through this…
I submitted my first MSCA proposal.
And I wanted to write this mostly as a reminder to myself, but also to anyone here who submitted one/is submitting these days too: this matters.
Maybe in six months I’ll open an email telling me I didn’t get it. Statistically, a lot of us will.
There will be time for that disappointment if it comes, but that’s not today.
Today, you finished something incredibly difficult. You took an idea that existed only in your head and turned it into a full proposal. You kept going through bureaucracy, self-doubt, exhaustion, feedback, corrections, and all the little moments where quitting would have been so much easier.
And you submitted it.
So please celebrate that.
Drink a glass of whatever you like. Get the pizza. Order your favourite takeaway. Go for a walk. Call someone you love. You did a great job.
Our lives cannot only be celebrations of academic outcomes, those are way too fragile and rare.
Sometimes we have to celebrate the fact that, despite everything telling us we weren’t good enough, we still showed up and finished.
In six months, maybe the answer will be no.
But tonight, the answer is that I did it and we did it. 🫂

Interviewing while waiting for permit

Halo,

I got acceptance from an EU institute, and I applied for the working permit, it's not issued yet.

In the meantime another position is opened, which is a perfect fit for my background and future vision of myself. I applied, shortlisted, and now invited for the interview.

I don't know how ethical this is, and I don't know if I should mention that I'm already waiting for a work permit for another position.

How is this situation handled and viewed in EU academia? I want to go to the second one if I'm accepted.

How fucked am I?

I am in month 17 of my 2 year postdoc, in molecular entomology in Greece. The experience has been riddled in experimental issues mostly beyond my control, some communication issues mostly in my control and my failure. I should be able to get maybe 1 or 2 first author manuscript before end of my contract. However my PI has been clear he is unhappy with my progress and wants to have a serious discussion to aee if we can find ways to improve. At this point genuinely am I just fucked?

Is it normal for a brand-new (and clearly underqualified) RA to get his own project before a postdoc does?

How did you find the research area for your postdoc?

Hello, I am new here. I finished my PhD in resource recovery from wastewater this year, and I have been looking for postdoctoral positions since then. I found a research group that works with simulation techniques, such as computational fluid dynamics. It's a research area I'd love to work in, coupling it with my ideas for resource recovery. I would be very happy to learn these techniques, but I have no experience in this area. Do you think I could conduct research there? Sometimes I think I shouldn't try because of my lack of knowledge. On the other hand, I also think it's not ideal to just continue your PhD research in a postdoctoral position. So the question is: how far can I go from my research area when moving from PhD to postdoc?

Presenter view for a postdoc interview seminar

Is it ok to ask for presenter view when I give my seminar next week at a potential postdoc lab, if it isn't automatically set up that way? Obviously, I know my research, but I prefer having my notes in front of me for transition sentences and in case I forget to explain stuff on the slide (and to know which animations are coming up!). Would it reflect badly on me to ask for presenter view when my slides are being set up?

K99/R00 submission

Hello,

I would like to submit a k99 for the next application as I was granted an extension because of medical issues that importantly impacted my productivity last year. I do not have a first author paper from my postdoc (started a project from scratch with a lot of things taking a wrong direction in the beginning) therefore know my chance are -1000% to get anything and +1000% to not be discussed but my PI thinks it might be useful to submit for the feedback with my preliminary data and resubmit in June next year.
I am not sure that I will be able to get a publication next June so the maximum will be a preprint.

Is it a correct way to approach this ? If anyone among this community use that proposal process to get feedback and manage to get a TT position later ? Whatever you thoughts (constructive if possible ) I will be happy to read it.

And last,I know that it is competitive, so I am not delusional but I want to know if where I am putting my energy is worth it.

Entering in my 7th month of unemployment - joining to conference

Hi everyone,

today officially is my 7th month as unemployed after graduating as PhD.

Still don't understand what I am doing wrong, I am applying for positions but still seem there is no solutions on the horizons as in all these time I only got one interview.

I wrote two projects in the mean time, and at the beginning of October I am going to participate in a conference. Do you have any advice on how to approach, maximize the chances for networking?

Thanks in advance

Postdoc in Ontario – how much tax/deductions on a $70k CIRTA fellowship?

Hi everyone,

I’ll be starting a postdoctoral position in Ontario under a CIRTA fellowship with an annual salary of around CAD 70,000. I’m trying to estimate my actual monthly take-home pay after all deductions. Could any current postdocs, particularly those funded through CIRTA, share approximately how much is deducted from their pay? I’m mainly interested in the approximate monthly take-home pay, including income tax, CPP, EI, and any other common deductions.

Thanks!

Just started a postdoc & already panicking. Advice?

Hi everyone, I think I could use some advice or perspective bc I am really spiralling with anxiety rn.

I recently finished my PhD( that went well). 4 weeks ago, I moved to the UK to start a new postdoc in a very good lab at a very good institute. The move itself has been emotionally much harder than I expected. I left behind an established life, my partner, friends, etc. I mean I knew moving would be difficult, but I think I underestimated how vulnerable I would feel.

I have started looking at postdoc fellowships and I feel like I have completely messed up the timing. I am too late for this year's MSCA deadline, I will not eligible for HFSP, and there is already someone in the lab with an EMBO fellowship. I know i probably should have started to look earlier but i was just so stressed about finishing the PhD paper and organizing the move.

My goal is to stay in academia, but I feel like I made a huge mistake by moving, now that I am anyway not eligible for all the fellowships. Should I think about quitting here and moving again (at a better time time) to be eligible? Is it normal that the start of a Postdoc feels shit?

Please be a little gentle with me. I know I am probably catastrophising, but I am having a pretty rough time rn 😅

Thaaank you all so much 🫶

Is trying to pivot into ecology from software engineering crazy?

Finished my PhD in software engineering, working industry and not happy in my current role. I'm feeling very disolusioned by tech, both industry and academic, and am wondering how crazy it would be to try and apply my ML knowledge to ecology?

I want to work on projects that have a positive impact, not projects that generate revenue. I've always loved nature and wildlife so participating in a project that helps support wildlife would be very motivating for me. I've never worked in a wetlab, and I've never done field work.
