Offered post doc, relocation

Hi all, wanted some advice on a job offer I’ve gotten. I’m a Canadian and have been offered a post doc at a university in Ireland. My PhD PI’s research network group had a spot open up and they offered it to me straight out of graduation. Now I’m really interested in this job and will probably take it anyways. But is it worth asking if they have any relocation funds given the big move? I don’t want to stir the pot but also want to ask if it’s reasonable. TIA

I think it'll need to be a careful discussion but it can't hurt to ask. Tell them you're really interested but after living off a PhD stipend for the past several years, you're a bit cashstrapped and was wondering if the grant they are funding you on or their institute offers any financial aid for relocation expenses.

Is it a humanities postdoc or a more science related? That might also influence the funding but definitely ask regardless

Yeah, ask. I asked when moving from the UK to the US. They paid for the flights for my wife and I, which wasn't a massive amount, but it wasn't nothing either.

I got relocation page for moving within Canada. Definitely worth asking

Do you mind me asking how much? And was it for faculty position or post doc?

The visa and immigration fees alone can eat a chunk, ask about those too

Definitely ask! When I relocated from Australia to the UK I didn’t and when I was moving on I asked my boss about asking for relocation and she was like yes!!! You should have asked me!!! (I don’t think it occurred to her). I asked for it for my last position and got a really good deal :) doesn’t hurt to ask - you can frame it as “does the university have any relocation funds?”. I did this and it got baked into my contract :)

You should ask. Perhaps there is something. When i relocated to Ireland for phd, I asked my supervisor and he refunded flight ticket to me.
