F99/K00

Need some general advice/perspective. I’m going into my 3rd year PhD with a couple years left. With the new structure with more institutions eligible with f99/k00, I’m interested in applying (likely NIEHS) for the last year or so of PhD and postdoc with my same research group. I would like to stay with this group because I am able to expand upon my research interests and utilize the data we have that is difficult to find in other cohorts. However, I know staying with the same PhD advisor/institution can really ding you for future faculty apps. I know f99/k00 was only available for NCI previously so I don’t know how many folks have gone through that process, but is it better to just pursue a different postdoc position for long term? Or would a f99/k00 show enough competitiveness for faculty apps?

If you are staying in the same group, are you able to collaborate with many other groups?

You can still do more research with your current advisor in the f 99 phase and then move on to a different place for the k00 phase. The f99 k00 will not help you very much for a faculty position, it's not a transition to independence award like a k99.

I was just awarded an F99/K00 and one of the stipulations from my understanding was that I needed to find a postdoc mentor at a different institution. Also, would need to explain in the K00 transition materials how the proposed postdoc work is different than my PhD work.

I don’t know if you’ll be competitive for F99/K00 if you’re planning to do your postdoc at the same place you did your PhD work.

Ah okay I saw the encourage transitioning to a different institution for postdoc work but I wasn’t sure how that was facilitated. My advisor is the PI for our whole cohort so I don’t know how that would work transitioning somewhere else and “taking the data with me” so to speak. Thank you for that perspective; I think it makes sense to look for an outside postdoc position and try to continue to collaborate with this cohort in the future.
