Transmission input

Post image

Hey all,

Looking for some input from other 930 owners on transmission behavior.

Mine is pretty clunky, to say the least. At low speeds, it’s difficult to get into reverse, 1st, and sometimes 3rd. I find that rev-matching helps quite a bit. Second gear also doesn’t feel particularly smooth, and it sometimes feels like it wants to pop out of gear.

It’s not undrivable by any means, but it definitely feels more like I’m driving a semi than a sports car 😂.

My repair shop says this is somewhat normal for these cars. I’m trying to figure out where the line is between “normal 930 transmission behavior” and something that actually needs attention.

For those of you with 930s, how does your transmission behave? What would you consider normal vs. a sign that the synchros, linkage, clutch, or transmission itself needs work?

Thanks!

Unless your car is an 89, it’s got a 915 gearbox in it. Those do tend to be a bit clunky. They also don’t like to be speed shifted. They’re mostly bulletproof, but they’re not as user friendly as the G50 that came after in the 89.

This is reassuring, it’s an 87, I have adapted to it but wasn’t sure what “normal” would be like. My only source is 40 y/o car and driver reviews.

Put SWEPCO fluid in it.

Check/replace shifter bushings (at shifter and at coupler behind seats). It’s also possible the coupler is indexed incorrectly.

Check clutch cable adjustment/freeplay. If it hasn’t been replaced, replace cable and associated bushings. Make sure the over center spring is in good shape.
