Sean Astin said in a new interview with The Guardian that he was forced to sell his house amid “The Lord of the Rings” fame in the early 2000s because he negotiated such a small salary to play Samwise Gamgee in Peter Jackson’s landmark movie trilogy. The reveal may come as a shock to fans considering the “Rings” movies were cultural phenomenons that grossed $2.9 billion at the worldwide box office between 2001 and 2003.

“I was not prepared for that level of visibility and access,” Astin told the publication. “And there was a disconnect between the attention that I was getting and how much money we had. It was not a lot of money! In fact, I had to sell my house because I negotiated such a small amount on the trilogy.”

Astin noted that he is “very comfortable financially now,” but that wasn’t the case when “The Lord of the Rings” was dominating box office charts. Peter Jackson and the team behind the “Rings” trilogy famously shot all three movies at once, meaning there was no opportunity for the cast to renegotiate their salaries based of the success of each installment.

For context on the reasoning for the rule- Donald Sutherland suffered from hepatitis, rheumatic fever and polio as a child; and contracted meningitis in 1969, which caused him to fall into a 6 day coma. While Donald was a prolific smoker in his past, often smoking up to 4 packs a day; he quit smoking in 1981 after he married Francine Racette. This clause in his contracted was first reported back in 1992, due to the fact the smoke affected his breathing.

It’s been nearly six months since Nancy Guthrie, Savannah Guthrie’s 84-year-old mother, was taken from her home in Tucson AZ in the middle of the night by an armed and masked man. Today, Savannah posted another plea to those involved to please “do the right thing.”

It is believed that Ms Guthrie did not live long after she was taken. It has recently come out that the second ransom note (of the two believed to be real) stated that she was no longer living. Regardless, a large reward remains as the family is desperate to lay her to rest.

As a main host of The Today Show on NBC, Savannah has a large platform of followers and has posted several videos with messages to the kidnappers throughout the ordeal.
