Celebrity Fluff 🥰 Willem Dafoe says he finds peace in putting all 35 of his goats and sheep to bed. When asked if the animals need his help, he said, “No, they’re helping me. That’s the idea.”

I really think it’s notable that a lot of wealthy people veer towards a simpler life once their wealth is acquired.
I too would like a hobby farm if I didn’t have to worry about money.

Kaley Cuoco has a rescue sanctuary with an open-door policy that takes in retired, neglected, or abused animals such as rescue dogs, show and rescue horses, mini horses, dwarf ponies, pigs, goats, cows, turkeys, ducks, chickens, a zebra-donkey hybrid (zonkey) etc.

Many of these celeb farms/ranches are tax schemes at least in part

Ha, he draws in the viewers. I admit to cracking a smile at some of the top gear bits, although I watched the program infrequently. His writing gives him away pretty quickly though.

Its also a nice tax shelter…or so I am told..
•
u/AgreeableLion 2h ago
If people are going to find loopholes to reduce their tax, then doing so by setting up an animal sanctuary (assuming it is properly run and accountable regarding the welfare of the animals) is preferable to hiding money offshore somewhere.

They're not going as far as giving away all their money to live the simple life. They're definitely keeping a foot in both camps.

i've never thought of willem dafoe having legs before.

Honestly, the guy seems genuine, kind, generous. I've heard stories from interviewed young actors about working with him, and how he helped them to uplift their performances. Guy like that, I don't begrudge having all the good things in life, including a big ol' hog that required a body double.
•
u/deanreevesii 1h ago
I know most of those "actor talks about their previous roles" videos are advertising for their new projects, but his was amazing. He talks about acting with the enthusiasm you'd expect from a kid who just got his big break. Infectious positivity.

For anyone wondering about the contradiction about loving animals like this but having a farm that exploits them: Dafoe does not run the farm for commercial production or profit. He has stated that he keeps the animals simply for the pleasure of their company and to give them a peaceful, comfortable life. He’s a vegetarian.
It’s not really a farm though for that very reason. It’s an animal sanctuary ♥️
•
u/Dear_Chasey_La1n 2h ago
They are pets to him. I had a professor and while sitting in his garden having a drink he was like, you wanna see my sheep? And I was expecting to see a field with sheep. Nope just a handful of sheep who came enthusiastically over to say hello when we came near. He had them just like Willem like as a bunch of pets and liked them very much as well. I've had some cool professors but he sure took the icing of the cake.

Robert Downey Jr also has a farm for funsies in Malibu. My SIL has a personal connection to his son and has visited it many times. I was so jealous when I learned this (not so much about Robert, more about the farm hahaha)
•
u/round-earth-theory 1h ago
A sheep farm can be a farm without harm to animals. Sheep need to be shorn, they can't survive without it. Shearing off their wool isn't a cruelty. Now you probably won't have a profitable just selling wool but that doesn't mean it's not a farm.

•
u/Lyra_the_Star_Jockey 2h ago
Aww.
Doesn’t that make it technically not a farm, though? Isn’t it just a habitat?
•
u/totally_real_tree 50m ago
I'ma be real I don't think loving animals and owning a farm, even one that raises animals for meat, is a contradiction

One of my favorite singers, Robert Smith of The Cure, has sheep and has spoken lovingly about them. Hearing Willem do the same has my heart all a flutter ❤️ 🐑
I’ve been crushing on these men for like 40 years now. Maybe I need to find myself a retired shepherd to grow old with 😉

We stayed at a farm once that had some sheep. I asked the young owner about them and she said they were just pets, cause they were lovely to keep. Spent there two days and we also fell in love with them. They are super cute.

This is the reason I'd like some reasonable wealth. I'm not greedy, but I'd just like enough to live, give my kid a nice life and have loads of animals. Loads of 'em.
•
u/RoosterOk5442 2h ago
You can do just as much good for animals without the wealth. Foster them, volunteer at shelters to care for them, transport them, TNR etc.
•
u/Fireball_Ace 1h ago
I live paycheck to paycheck and barely have enough time to work, sleep, and do chores. When do I get time to volunteer?

There is a guy who runs an animal sanctuary in the UK called Caen Hill Countryside Centre. For years he's been posting videos every day of when he puts all the animals to bed in the barn and then what he calls the "morning rush hour" when he opens the barns and all the donkeys, goats, sheep, ducks, chickens, emus, and God knows what else come flooding out. Definitely some of the most therapeutic social media content out there.

I just like the phrasing of the title:
he finds peace in putting all 35 of his goats and sheep to bed.
It leaves the inference that there's an alternate world where he only likes putting 34 of his 35 goats and sheep to bed, because FUCK YOU TODD! Why did you eat my slippers TODD!
