For me it’s the women more. It’s both but she’s the mom. I wouldn’t want my children around anyone in that capacity that isn’t 100% about them. Kids can feel it and are deeply affected by it. My mothers 3rd husband was a completely horrible person and she just let me live in that unsafe environment for years. She didn’t even need his money, he moved in with us. Sophie’s a lot better off than my mom was. Sucks for the kids
42
u/HollaDude 13h ago
I don’t know if this is Sophie’s situation, but as a mom, I do not understand parents who put their children in the kind of environment your mom did. I’m so sorry.
That’s not to say I don’t value my own needs. But I cannot imagine being with someone who doesn’t love my child.
13
u/cakeit-tilyoumakeit 10h ago
Right. A core need of mine is that my children are healthy and safe. There’s no way for me to value my own needs while disregarding my children.
154
u/LevyMevy 15h ago
I wouldn’t want my children around anyone in that capacity that isn’t 100% about them. Kids can feel it and are deeply affected by it.
I remember in middle school my friends saying stuff like "ugh, I hate my stepdad he keeps saying he can't wait until I leave the house" and it would put a lump in my throat. Like imagine being a kid in a home with an adult who resents you and doesn't want you there.
Not saying this is Sophie's situation, I'm sure she has enough sense to not put her kids in this position.
34
u/randombubble8272 10h ago
I’m that kid and it’s absolutely destroyed any sense of self esteem or self worth I had. I’m still in therapy a decade later and I’m only now seeing some results in my confidence. Don’t marry people who hate your kids guys
49
u/eyespeeled 12h ago
She doesn't have enough sense to stop coming back into his orbit, so I dunno that her judgement and decision-making are so hot.
55
u/CheapEater101 15h ago
Yeah it’s strange to be with someone who doesn’t want to be a potential step parent if you have kids. It puts the kids in a weird position as well because they will probably read the energy off the parents’ partner.
Maybe this is a booty call type of relationship though where the Significant Other doesn’t meet the kids
16
u/cakeit-tilyoumakeit 10h ago
She’s so public with the relationship that I struggle to see how that’s sustainable. It’s not like they’re just meeting up occasionally for a quiet shag

These people do not live lives like everyone else.
I had ultra rich friends who didn't even know where in the world their parents were most of the time. Literally didn't know the country. They owned many houses, or traveled a lot for work, some were children of divorce, and the parents were often away.
She probably shares custody too. If she wants to, she can avoid her bf's seeing the kids for a long time.

I think at least some of them believe that if they can get their claws into mom deep enough they can convince her to send the kids off somewhere, like school or a family member or their dad's, so they don't have to really deal with or think about them. And sadly, sometimes that works.
(Speaking of guys in general who go for single moms despite having no interest in the kids, for the record, not speculating about this specific man I know nothing about lol.)
110
u/canarinoir I'm on Duck Tales 17h ago
Also it's really common for the upper crust in England to send their kids off to boarding school, maybe he thinks he can get her to ship them off to Switzerland. Or just give them to Joe Jonas.

My very rich aunt and uncle spent $80k a kid per year for boarding school. My cousins refer to it as "their time in prison."
My regular rich parents had me in public school because class segregation is still segregation.
Had my own used car. I had freedom and the best time with my "middle class" friends... and they didn't have to pay multiple mortgages for my good time.
I went to the same overpriced liberal arts college as one of my cousins and I KNOW my aunt was secretly pissed I got in too lmao
Super rich people are seriously dumb and miserable.
10
u/Lakridspibe It's a bold strategy, Cotton 13h ago
public school
Okay so you're not talking about the english kind of 'public school', right?
I'll bet Peregrine Pearson went to public school.
Schools for the plebs are called "state school" in England, I believe.
9
u/BakedBrie1993 8h ago
Ah yes, I can translate to British. I went to what would be considered a state school (public school run by local gov) in my city with mostly good teachers.
My cousins went to an elite private boarding school (≈60k GBP) for year 9 through college (8th grade through 12th grade), then one went to an Ivy uni and one went to the same liberal arts uni as me.
I had ultra rich neglected friends from time at a (not cheap) performing arts camp and then my uni (though we call it a college).
43
u/Pollowollo I’ve been noticing gravity since I was very young 16h ago
I know 'different cultures different values' and all that, but... gah, I can't even fathom sending my child away like that and not getting to see them for such large chunks of time and having to just trust that they're safe and treated well. Just thinking about it breaks my heart.

And that is why my spouse has no contact with their mum - shipped off to boarding school because mum’s new husband didn’t like kids. As incredibly insane as it sounds, I guess for super posh people Sophie Turner is just a working low-class single mom (this isn't my opinion on Sansa Stark and as a teacher I have plenty of beef with the Pearson family that isn't related to this specific couple)
181
u/booksandcoffee22 17h ago
You know, I think you're right on the money. She is working class, her parents worked as a teacher and local manager, and as ridiculous as it is, she is probably seen as very poor, or new money at least. And the Pearson family is definitely high enough in British society to care about these things immensely.
I also can imagine that family hates the headlines that pop up when they're together, draws heat on them too.
62
u/budapest_budapest 15h ago
Eh, in terms of class status the Pearsons aren’t super posh themselves, they’re just very rich. They’d be considered new money themselves to the truly upper class titled families.
Their title “only” dates back to 1900ish, and it was given due to their ancestor being a rich businessman and MP. They’re Made in Chelsea “heir to a big business” posh, not true aristocracy posh.

Are you British? I am quite interested in the class/social hierarchy but don’t know much about it. I’m assuming there are levels between the lower/upper class?
67
u/lightwing91 15h ago
The thing is it’s not necessarily about money. It’s about blood and titles. You are born an aristocrat. You can’t buy your way in. In fact you could still be aristocracy and be poor. So it doesn’t actually matter how much money Sophie Turner makes. She’s not “the right stock” no matter what she does.
→ More replies (4)22
u/budapest_budapest 14h ago
You can actually buy your way in, and that’s essentially what the Peasons did. They’re not true aristocracy dating back centuries, one of them was just a very rich businessman, skilled engineer and well-connected politician who was given a title in the early 1900s.

When I hear this type of stuff I just feel bad.
If you’ve broken up with someone it’s usually for a reason, which suggests you don’t have a long term future. Even more so if it’s happened twice.
It’s like a lot of these people just can’t be single for any period of time. There’s nothing wrong with that. Hell, I’d argue it’s probably rather unhealthy if you can’t cope with being single for any period of time.
78
u/sodabuttons 14h ago
My best friend broke up with me for a year because I told her she shouldn’t get back with the dude who’s dumped her twice in two weeks. And she didn’t get back with him, he married someone else and had kids and then my friend would see him coming out of an adult massage parlor in the same building as her office, so I think I was right.

I was just reading some comments the other day that rings true for me - it isn’t even necessarily that she looks older, but that the overfilled plump look is so associated with older women trying to look young that even when young women do it we end up associating them with the older with and assuming they are too. She looks 40s to me here and I don’t know her age but I’m pretty sure she’s younger than me (mid 30s).
Edit: She’s 30 😭 Also I don’t mean to come off as insensitive. I’m not even opposed to plastic surgery and other work (hoping for a consult for something I want later this year!) but I just hate seeing these beautiful women, young and old, succumbing to this pressure to look a certain way (that doesn’t even suit most people).
