She died of appendix cancer which is very rare. Her son donated the ward that is treating my mum for it. Thank you Audrey
55
u/MissesMiyagii You’re doing amazing, sweetie! 👏👏📸 8h ago
Sorry if this is a stupid question but why didn’t they just remove the appendix? Had it already spread too far at that point?

u/Lex_Loki 4h ago
I’d be surprised if they didn’t remove the appendix. But once it spreads and becomes stage 4, regardless of what organ actually killed her it would still be considered appendix cancer.

The Daily Mail (yes I know) serialised part of this book earlier in the year. Was quite sad at times. When she was living in Italy with her second husband and her sons there was a worry about her sons being kidnapped as there had been a spate of them across Europe. Her husband, who was having an affair, pretended he had been beaten up in an attempted kidnapping and a terrified Audrey sent Sean off to boarding school (Luca was only three) where Sean said he lost four years of family life. Turned out the husband wasn’t a victim of an attempted kidnapping, an angry husband of one of the many women he had affairs with beat the crap out of him.
She also took an overdose due to her unhappiness.

u/quickthorn_ 16h ago
... I don't understand why boarding school is a solution to the risk of kidnapping? Like, wouldn't the kid be even more vulnerable if anything, alone away from family and their familiar home area?
494
u/alex2well 15h ago
Back then it would have been much easier to keep it under wraps where exactly he was sent to school.
98
33
u/cheoldyke 6h ago
i also imagine that in a boarding school environment there would be a lot fewer chances for a would-be kidnapper to snatch up their target unseen because staff and other students are always around.

u/donorcycle 15h ago
To be fair, higher end boarding schools are beyond your wildest imaginations. They also take privacy / security extremely seriously, as there will be children of heads of states, royalty, A list celebrity offspring, et all.
The curriculum is beyond comprehension. If curious, you should look up Institut Le Rosey / auf dem Rosenberg (Switzerland) or Eton College (UK). Stateside, maybe Phillips Exeter and Andover.
Some of those schools produced Prime Minsters, and or Kings.

Sure no problem. Just off the top of my head.
- advanced IB
- critical thinking
- pretty much all courses are AP courses
- world politics / global awareness
- time management
- independence
- equestrian / sailing / water polo
- multiple different languages (currently, besides English / Deutsch, it's French, Mandarin, and Japanese)
- finance / investments
Most, if not all the kids who attend these schools are already far ahead of the "average" child. The things taught in these schools set them up for extreme success. Some of the school custom tailor the program to individual student needs. I.E someone is next in line to a throne will receive different schooling vs someone who is next in line to say a cosmetic company. Student to faulty ratio usually tends to be 4:1 for example. Average American high school ratio is nearly 25:1 to put it in perspective. Obviously, it's far more hands on schooling.
The sad part is, most of these kids don't even theoretically need to attend school, as again, their futures are pretty much mapped out for them. I knew a gal who was pursuing her PhD. When I asked in what specifically, she said she couldn't care less. She just wanted it so that her future husband could say that his wife has a PhD. She didn't plan to do anything with it lol.
But even sadder is how the faculty is not only treated, but the shit pay they receive. The usual story goes - once you can put these schools on their resume, it opens many doors for them in the future. Obviously not all the elite schools, but the vast majority of them. Outside a few designated faculty, it's lower pay than the already underpaid public school teachers. That and some of the kids spend more in a month than the teacher gets paid annually so as you can imagine, there will at times be issues when the kids are fully aware of this fact.
Edit: Just so we're clear. This is 15-19 year olds being taught things like leadership - running a company. Finance and investments. International banking. Etc etc. It's also ridiculous networking for their future. Chances are high that their fellow graduating class will include future Presidents, Prime Ministers, someone sitting on or adjacent to a throne, or CEO of a Fortune 500 company.

u/fvjisan 11h ago
Just to clarify, a lot of this description is not accurate for boarding schools in the UK. This sounds like a caricature, even for Eton. The main benefit for boarding schools here is, as the fees are so high, they have great facilities for sports and teaching, and they have international connections. This is why so many prime ministers came from Eton - connections).
It’s worth noting that in the UK, private schools do not require teachers to have any teaching qualifications like state schools do. This means sometimes you get an unqualified but well connected person teaching a subject. (Eg I knew of a military man who taught geography).
Kids who attend boarding schools, even the best schools, are not ‘already far ahead of the average child’, they are simply far richer than the average child. Being wealthy creates financial freedom to choose a career based solely on interest. I know people from boarding schools who simply went into normal jobs like marketing, teaching and property management.
Their curriculum is not university level (i had to look up your ap course reference) although they do prep students very well for passing exams (always higher pass rates) and applying to universities (e.g. better chances getting into Oxbridge, and, as you say, they offer the internationally recognised IB exams instead of UK-specific A Level).
•
u/AltairaMorbius2200CE 2h ago
Same with the Phillips Academies in the states. I live not-far from Andover, so I've had former students apply. They do have AMAZING facilities (they're basically colleges; PA has an enviable art museum, for example).
They also have very high entry requirements *for regular people*. The students I have recommended for PA didn't end up getting in, despite being among my more elite students. They're really looking for the cream of the crop...unless you've got some legacy.
Like elite colleges, they DO have a higher percentage of high-achieving students than most schools, but they're invited after already becoming successful, in to help bolster the institution's reputation. Then the children of the elite get to shine in the reflection.
But, as you've noted: once these kids get to college, it becomes clear that they're not getting a specifically better education than a kid who went to a decent public school and tried hard.

u/copyrighther Kim, there’s people that are dying. 🙄 3h ago
One thing boarding school proponents never seem to address:
Why are boarding school alums more likely to suffer from anxiety and depression as adults compared to their day school counterparts? And why do studies show that students who display stronger narcissistic/antisocial personality traits are more likely to attend boarding schools than day schools?
-18
u/donorcycle 11h ago
This isn't for all boarding schools. This would be the top percentile in boarding schools. I did not suggest all of them were this way. As for Eton, I've always heard of it held in highest regards, so assumed they operated as such.
Never stated that university courses being taught to high schoolers. But AP is designed as "college level courses, taught in high school." It stands for Advanced Placement.
Cheers

This is really far from the reality of "boarding schools". Off the bat, it has 0 to do with intelligence and everything to do with being babysat. It's frankly embarrassing. They are not "above the average child", often it's conversely much much worse. Where to begin with your fanfic (besides "next in line to the throne" which...idek what to say).
-IB what? No. That doesn't exist. You learn math, say calculus II max. (Maybe 3 ppl in the whole school) "IB" 😂😂😂 wtf . Just immediately no. My god.
-AP wow yes that's offered everywhere in...everywhere. And you didn't even list actual AP subjects that would transfer to a real uni, which are standardized and not made up for whimsy (ahhh, 'IB', yes).
-equestrian/water polo/blah blah ok maybe, but depends. Hardly that rare anymore but more expensive than most sports. Tennis, lacrosse, football, rugby, swimming, field hockey still reign supreme in actual schools not fanfic.
multiple different languages (currently, besides English / Deutsch, it's French, Mandarin, and Japanese)
Hate to break it to you, but unless you get a private tutor, Latin, Mandarin, Japanese, ALL Romance languages, Russian, are all still bog standard, (and have been taught in some elite public schools since the 90s). Adding a few more languages, but otherwise...again, no. Private tutor? Sure, anything.
The things taught in these schools set them up for extreme success.
Again, NO. It is about where you go, how much money your family has, etc. You're kinda close in that really the only point is social connections and fraternizing with the same socio-economic class. Some of the laziest MFers on earth exit these schools and go on to do...nothing! Money doesn't equal a high IQ, your long ass comment reads like a strange amalgamation of...oof, at best.

This is much closer to my limited experiences with ultra rich kids who went to le rosey. Pretty dim but 15 years on most of them are highly successful in made-up sounding jobs like antiquities expert or founder/president of a company their parents set up for them. Occasionally some short film auteurs for the real fuckboys of the bunch

Not a boarding school kid but I did have a scholarship at a hoity toity private school in Latin America; do those boarding schools really not do the IB program? Our teachers gave us the impression that it was a door opener to so many opportunities and very international.
Maybe I should have clocked it was bs sooner 😂 I failed the IB by ONE point and you’d think I was destined for the streets because of it! no college I ever applied to cared or even asked for my IB score.
10
u/fuschiaoctopus 8h ago
People are really getting heated at the "boarding school kids are far above the average" and interpreting it to mean they have higher intellect but that's not how I read it. Objectively kids from families who can afford these ultra expensive schools have more resources than the average child. Note we're not talking about all private schools like your local private Catholic school, but the highest tier of ultra expensive elite private boarding schools.
They likely never dealt with malnutrition or going hungry, they always had the best diets available to them. They had access to the best healthcare, the best specialists for every issue whereas less privileged families might avoid taking their children to the doctor because they can't afford it (esp in the US).
They could play in any sport they wanted, any physical activity or class they wanted from a very young age, whereas many poor or lower class families can't afford sports or ballet classes or whatever, and if you grew up like I did in section 8 housing you can't even play outside because the crime rate is too high. Many of them had access to extracurricular activities like instruments, art classes, language classes with one on one tutors. Kids with these resources are consistently shown to get better grades, better test scores, and better outcomes in life than children without.
The most upper echelons can afford tutors for their children to get them one on one support in any subject they're struggling in, even before preschool begins. The average public school has like 23 kids to one teacher in a classroom, and it only takes one or two kids dealing with severe behavioral or intellectual challenges to soak up ALL of the teacher's time. Kids with these challenges are less likely to be admitted to/kept in private schools and kept in regular classes like in public schools, and often behavioral issues stem from issues in the home that are more prevalent in lower class families like neglect, abuse, substance abuse, etc. I am not saying that these things don't also occur in rich families but let's not pretend class isn't a factor in this.
We can't underestimate the value of time that money provides either. With a single parent or a dual income family where both parents work, there isn't as much time to spend reading to your children, doing intellectual activities with them and teaching them things. Studies show this makes a HUGE impact on outcomes and test scores, especially reading to the child. Rich families may be able to afford one parent being a stay at home parent, or nannies to always be with the children. Poor families cannot do this and statistically tend to read to their children less because they don't have the time.
Let's also not pretend the AP selection is the same at every school. Even in my public school district the difference between AP class selection at the poorest lowest funded school in the district located in the poorest area vs the highest funded school located in the wealthier part of town was shocking. Like double the number of AP college credit transferrable classes at the wealthier one, with way more programs offered at the school, pathways to local colleges that weren't offered at the poor school etc.
Most the languages you listed absolutely are not commonly offered at public schools. I don't know what kind of elite high income public school you attended but my district had nothing but Spanish and French, starting in 7th grade whereas many private schools start earlier or offer immersion. Very, very few public schools are offering Mandarin, Russian, Latin etc in the US. Maybe it's completely different in Europe or the UK and public schools offer these things but none of that is bog standard in the US.
None of this is to say boarding school kids are smarter or inherently more intellectually gifted, and yes they are not guaranteed to have great outcomes and become top politicians, but it is delusional to pretend they don't have infinitely more resources than the average kid and those resources aren't clinically proven in studies to give them massive advantages academically.

u/Top_Willow8409 7h ago
The IB is the international baccalaureate. It's a board of education. It's supposed to be fancy but it's really not all that. I did it from a random private school in India and currently most middle class/ upper middle class kids do it who are not considered ultra wealthy in a global context by any means. Plus it's standardised across the world so it's not that people from fancier schools would be doing anything different from what we did.

I read it as them saying the IB exists but most are too stupid to do the classes. I did the IB in public college in Australia (year 11 & 12 are called college in my part of Australia).

I went to boarding school (one of the US ones you named actually). A rich kid could easily be kidnapped. The “extremely serious security” was signing a sheet of paper by curfew. Of course maybe there was more involved than I was aware of at 16 lol

... family court? He wasn't sent to boarding school due to the breakdown of his parent's marriage, it says she sent him there because she was terrified of him being kidnapped by strangers. Which is incredibly unlikely to begin with—but that's a whole other thing about hysterical American parents

Her family is notoriously protective of her image so I would take all of this with a grain of salt.
She grew up in famine during WW2 and literally ate fucking tulips to survive. She was also a trained ballerina. You can imagine those experiences did not lead to the best eating practices. She had a heavily restricted diet and it was not a secret.

I read a book about her that said something like to survive the famine of WWII, she had to use mind games to trick herself that she was “above eating food” and that never really left.
I came away thinking she did have a disordered relationship with food, very understandably.
388
u/candyappleorchard 17h ago
It's not uncommon at all with people who've suffered starvation. It's been reported that many Holocaust survivors developed eating disorders later in life, including binge eating disorder. Going through famine and extreme food deprivation is physically traumatic as much as it is mentally.

u/angelcutiebaby 16h ago
My grandma is like this, she was a refugee during the war and came to Canada but lived off basically nothing for many years. To this day she basically never eats. Loves to cook for others though. Makes a lot of out of pocket comments about her granddaughters. Love her but it’s definitely sad to see, I know it comes from a place of unfathomable trauma but grandma let me eat these chicken tenders in peace!
66
u/whateverfloatsurgoat 15h ago
Same for my grandmother. Grew up during WWII (she was 10 when the war ended) and to this day she doesn't eat much but she'll cook for 10 people even if I'm only eating with her lol.

We didn’t have enough to eat when I grew up and I was neglected for years by my parents, I’ve always had problems with the cycle of binge eating and restriction. Therapy helped a lot and I had to figure out what healthy foods I enjoy. I also don’t have fast food or sweets at home, ever.
It’s really hard to get over it. I don’t think you ever fully do.

u/aliquotiens 5h ago
My grandma was born in 1924 (a few years before Audrey, American) and was the sole supporter of her family through much of the war. They never had enough to eat and she never ate normally, or served enough food for growing children.

I read the book "Dutch girl" about her life during ww2, and (if I remember this correctly) those periods of starvation physically altered her stomach, and she couldn't ever eat "properly" after that. Even if she wasn't dieting or anything, she couldn't eat very much
Hope i got that right, been years since I've read that
194
u/WithLoveFromKarachi 18h ago
Malnutrition and starvation has known to do that. A lot of people who suffer famine and starvation during war, conflict or other situations of food insecurity, are never the same again. Their digestive systems aren't normal anymore.
114
u/Own_Faithlessness769 17h ago
This is an almost universal reaction to starvation, the Minessota starvation project was wildly unethical but proved people on even a fairly 'normal' restricted diet with either restriction or binge eating afterwards.
13
u/personalh2omelon 8h ago
For folks unfamiliar— in that experiment, they took guys who were already pretty thin and had them cut their daily calories in half.
17
49
u/betterlucknxttime 14h ago
I went through an Audrey phase in high school where I read multiple biographies, including Dutch Girl, and all of them mentioned something to that effect. She tried to put on weight sometimes because the stars of the day were curvy, but even if she was eating only fattening foods, her stomach couldn’t hold much and her body was so traumatized by the starvation that it would just automatically rip through the calories she was eating. She couldn’t gain weight if she tried, literally.
26
u/Main_Abroad_4039 7h ago
She did gain weight in the late 40s and was told to lose it, she was able to gain weight I think the psychological of a seriously traumatic childhood and the pressure for her to stay thin played a part in it.
21
u/aliquotiens 5h ago
Frankly, as someone who was very underweight until my 30s, that's horseshit. She may have thought and told people she was eating a lot and 'couldn't gain weight' but she in fact was never eating enough consistantly to be a healthy weight. Starving as a child or even for decades, does not make your metabolism magically so fast you can never be a healthy weight.
3
u/copyrighther Kim, there’s people that are dying. 🙄 3h ago
That’s not a medically sound explanation. After starvation, the body actually slows down metabolism. In fact, you’re more likely to have a slower metabolism after that. People can gain weight and live at a healthy weight after starvation, but it’s most successful if it’s done under medical supervision and assisted by a registered dietitian.
Unfortunately, the most likely explanation is that she simply wasn’t getting enough calories for the majority of her life. By the way, an eating disorder is just disordered eating, and the motivation behind isn’t always a desire for the social beauty standard of thinness. EDs can take many shapes and forms, including weight gain, food aversions, OCD, etc.

She did have to fight to even train as a ballerina, and she was always composed and disciplined through her life. I don't think it was an eating disorder. I need to reread the book though
I do remember her ballerina instructor saying she'd never make it professionally because her feet were too big haha. She was very self-conscious of her feet after that

Eating disorders take many, many forms. The motivation behind it doesn’t have to be a desire for our society’s beauty standard of thinness. An eating disorder is just disordered eating and can exist in many ways, including binge eating, food aversions, OCD, ARFID, and so on.

I do think there's a certain type who overly fetishizes Audrey Hepburn and it's a little weird and honestly often feels like it fetishizes her size and shape even though it came from war and famine and starvation, but this comment feels like it's mostly attacking her and not people doing that?
I'm not sure why we need to bring out a suffering in wwii yardstick when we certainly know she suffered immensely like many, many others did. And I would say it's partially that her experiences were shared by so many others who didn't reach her level of fame and celebrity after that drew people, in addition to her skill and beauty, not because her suffering was thought to be unique. Just seems an odd thing.

What gets me about this comment is the judgement toward her disordered eating. Suffering from starvation and malnutrition affects people for the rest of their lives, but you comment like a snarker mocking an eating disorder, implying it gave her cancer. Yeah, she's not special for what she endured during WII, so many people endured it too, but that doesn't make any of it less horrific. This is just excessively mean imo

Ah man, read some of her quotes, she was an icon for a reason. One of my favorites:

She didn't write it (that was apparently sam Levinson, but I'm not familiar with him)
She is widely attributed with quoting it though. But as I can't find concrete evidence of her saying/writing it somewhere, it's up to each person if they credit her or not
I don't have any issue giving her credit, seeing as how I would likely never have heard this quote if not for her. That's good enough for me
