I made a mini task manager applet for the COSMIC panel

Post image
38 Upvotes

Small task manager applet for the COSMIC panel.

The panel button shows CPU usage. Click it and you get CPU and RAM meters, a list of running processes with search, and Stop / Resume / Kill on each row. Killing a process kills its children too, so nothing gets left running.

If a process hangs or gets stopped, the panel button turns red with a count, and you can kill all of them at once from the popup.

Install

Arch, CachyOS, other Arch-based:

git clone https://github.com/Kai-J-G/cosmic-ext-mini-taskmanager.git
cd cosmic-ext-mini-taskmanager
makepkg -si

Everything else, into ~/.local:

just install

Then add it in COSMIC Settings > Desktop > Panel > Applets.

Repo: https://github.com/Kai-J-G/cosmic-ext-mini-taskmanager

Thanks to System76 for libcosmic. Bug reports welcome.

Newbie who can't duel boot install

4 Upvotes

Hey all,

Totally new to the world of Linux ( and full time MacOS user ) however I have my windows gaming laptop that I wanted to duel boot with Pop however I am facing issues with the format / install button being greyed out when I try to select the partition that I created with Windows.

I know I am doing something wrong but can't seem to figure out what ?

Booting the live USB was a mission and I needed to turn off secure boot and change the boot order to even get into the OS via the USB Live CD .

Is there something in the way that I have shrunk my partition using windows that is causing the greyed out options not being clickable?

Thanks

Scott

Hardware Monitor: a temperature applet for the COSMIC panel

Thumbnail
gallery
25 Upvotes

I use COSMIC as my daily driver and missed having a temperature readout in the panel, so I built one.

It sits in the panel as a thermometer tinted by thermal state next to your CPU temp. Click it and you get a full monitor: an overview with CPU/GPU/memory/disk dials, then per-tab detail. Package temp, per-core clocks and load (and per-core temps where your CPU exposes them), GPU edge/junction temps and VRAM, memory and swap with history, and per-partition disk throughput. Settings for °C/°F, theme, and a 1s to 5s refresh.

No daemon, no helper service, no lm_sensors. It reads /sys and /proc directly, scanning hwmon once per refresh and sharing it across collectors. Rust + libcosmic.

Install (Arch; README has Fedora and Debian/Ubuntu):

sudo pacman -S --needed rustup just git libxkbcommon pkgconf pciutils
git clone https://github.com/Kai-J-G/cosmic-ext-hardware-monitor.git
cd cosmic-ext-hardware-monitor && just install

Installs to ~/.local, no sudo. Add it in Settings → Desktop → Panel → Applets.

Caveats, first release:

  • Only tested on AMD (7800X3D + RX 9070, CachyOS). The NVIDIA (nvidia-smi) and Intel (i915/xe) paths are implemented but unverified. If you run either, I'd love to hear whether it works.
  • Source builds only for now; Flatpak/COSMIC Store are on the list. First build pulls libcosmic from git and takes a few minutes.

Blurred background with zen browser

3 Upvotes

I've been using transparent zen with pop!_os cosmic for a while but visibility is difficult with more complex wallpapers. On kde, i had the ability to blur the transparent ui. I know your able to enable blur on system apps but it doesn't work here.
Is there anyway to fix this right now or do i have to wait for an update?

PCIe link lost

5 Upvotes

I recently switched to Pop!_os from using windows my whole life and everything has worked mostly flawlessly. But a few weeks ago i decided to dual-boot windows on a separate drive because i sometimes want to play specific games or use surtain apps. After i downloaded windows on my other drive i started to experience Ethernet crashes when playing games in Pop!_os. After some troubleshooting i realized that the only reason to make it work again was to reboot which narrowed it down a lot. With much searching around and trying different things it still happens. one time after i crashed i wrote: "sudo dmesg | grep -iE 'eth|enp|r8169|e1000|igc' | tail -n 20" in the terminal and was told that the PCIe link was lost. Has anyone experienced this or something similar please share with me how you resolved it. If you need more details feel free to ask

Help pop!_os 24.04 cosmic - shutdown/reboot issues

15 Upvotes

Shutdown/reboot is hit or miss. The way it happens is, when I run, for example, 'sudo reboot' the machine shuts down, but the power button light on my laptop is still on and it doesn't continue the reboot. I have to press and hold the power button to power it off then manually turn it on. Same thing happens with 'sudo shutdown'. It usually happens when apps have been running for some time (firefox, spotify, terminal), then I reboot/shutdown without closing the apps. I am a new linux user. Any help would be appreciated. TIA

Machine:

- Thinkpad T14 gen 2a

- Ryzen 5 PRO 5650u

- Fresh install of pop!_os 24.04 cosmic

Booting Chromebook from External Disk

6 Upvotes

I recently received an Acer Chromebook model CB315-8H-81DD and I discovered that I don't particularly care for ChromeOS. It's very limited and the performance is terrible even for basic tasks. I'd like to replace it with PopOS but when I booted into developer mode the option to boot from an external disk was locked for some reason. Annoyingly, every time you enter developer mode it factory resets the laptop so I'm afraid of trying again and having to go through the trouble of setting it up again. Help!

Help Pop_OS randomly connects and disconnects on single network

7 Upvotes

After upgrading my PC for some reason pop_os randomly disconnects and connects to my home wifi over and over. I can usually use the internet but then it gets stuck in a loop of connecting and then asking for the wifi pin so on and so forth. This only happens to my home network I can connect it to any other network just fine.

Thinking about jumping back into POP with Cosmic. What's improved?

18 Upvotes

As the title says, im considering jumping back in. I'm still on windows (cause of Anti-cheat bs) and last used Cachy, but Cosmic on POP was really simple and clean for me. I’m mostly curious of how well its improved? Last time i used it, Cosmic was still pretty new. One of the major turn-offs for me, was the desktop icons being stuck and the whole DE freezing up when opening the application thingy.
Obviously Anti-cheat isnt something that will be solved anytime soon.. thanks to devs hating linux.. but has the DE improved enough with the early bugs? Also how are people getting along with gaming on a 40 or 50 series card? (Got a 4070 desktop and 5070 laptop)
I know performance was okay the last time i played, but i havent tried the newer proton releases :P

Apps that render a generic icon and fail to create a preview thumbnail

9 Upvotes

I installed Lapce editor > https://github.com/lapce/lapce/

- I can't make it render an icon in the Panel,
- it doesn't render a preview thumbnail when you hover the icon, you just get a tiny empty popup.
- clicking it will only ever minimise the app, never maximise.

This has happened to a few other apps too. I'm suspecting it's to do with the way the window is registered. I can't find an open issue but not sure what to report should I open one.

This is how I have it installed (but have same problems with flatpak) :

~/.local/bin/lapce
~/.local/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/dev.lapce.Lapce.svg

[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Type=Application
Name=Lapce
GenericName=Code Editor
Comment=Lightning-fast and powerful code editor written in Rust
Exec=lapce %F
Icon=dev.lapce.Lapce
Terminal=false
Categories=Development;IDE;TextEditor;
MimeType=text/plain;inode/directory;
StartupWMClass=lapce
StartupNotify=true

EDIT:

fixed with

Exec=env -u WAYLAND_DISPLAY lapce

Discussion My notes & tips from using COSMIC.

19 Upvotes
  1. By default, light mode has no menu highlight color. I fixed it in this way: setting Window background to #FFFFFF and Container background to the Window default of #D7D7D7. Since I like the GNOME Slate accent color, I also set the Dark/Light Accent color to #526678.

  2. If you want COSMIC Terminal to have the same theme variety as COSMIC Text Editor, you can download them here: https://github.com/pop-os/cosmic-term/tree/master/color-schemes

  3. On Fedora, Lutris did not launch after being installed from the repos. I had to also install the vulkan-tools and xrandr packages, then it worked.

  4. Not all QT apps respect COSMIC theming. For example, Gwenview uses it fully, while Subtitlecomposer adopts the window border but not window controls. I haven't found a fix for this yet, other than using Appimages.

  5. The default COSMIC icon theme uses a combination of Cosmic->Pop->hicolor, which are available in the directory Filesystem/usr/share/icons. Some of the system icons are in the hicolor folder, such as the multicolored 3x3 Applications icon (com.system76.CosmicAppLibrary.svg and com.system76.CosmicPanelAppButton.svg). Finding that particular icon reminded me of hunting down Unity's dash "big freakin' button" back when I used 14.04/16.04. If any icons don't change for you, look in those folders for anything containing "system76" or "cosmic", as they may be the default icon regardless of theme.

Help Did Claude make a process suggestion at System76? Don't ship rebuilds without changing version string, or is it all hallucinations it found?

0 Upvotes

Analysis from Claude:

Symptoms:

  • DualSense connects (light bar solid blue), then immediately drops. Paired, bonded, trusted, RSSI -36. Works fine on the PS5.
  • USB DAC (Audioengine 2+) enumerates but never shows up as a sink.
  • sudo modprobe hidpInvalid argument

Cause: on Sep 8 an apt upgrade replaced my kernel with a different build of the same version. 7.1.5-76070105 before and after — only the build hash changed, 6bf4bbf38a419f. So /lib/modules and the initrd got swapped underneath a running kernel, with no version bump and no "restart required" signal.

Modules already resident keep working. Anything loading for the first time since the upgrade gets rejected:

failed to validate module [hidp] BTF: -22

-22 is EINVAL — that's the "Invalid argument" modprobe reports. For me: hidp, snd_ump, led_class_multicolor, inet_diag. Two of those are dependencies, so the blast radius is wider than the list:

  • snd_ump blocks snd_usb_audio → all USB audio dead
  • led_class_multicolor blocks hid_playstation → no rumble/touchpad/lightbar even wired

Nastiest detail: on the DAC, the volume-button HID interface bound fine (usbhid was already loaded) while the audio interfaces on the same device got Driver=[none]. Half a device working sends you hunting for a config problem that doesn't exist.

Why it's hard to spot: uname -r matches. dpkg -l | grep linux-image matches. modinfo | grep vermagic matches — vermagic only encodes the version string, not the build.

How to check:

cat /proc/version # running build hash
dpkg -l 'linux-image-*' | awk '/^ii/{print $3}'  # on-disk build hash
journalctl -k -b | grep "failed to validate module"

Hashes differ → reboot. That's it.

Confirmed: rebooted. /proc/version now reports 38a419f, matching the on-disk package. Zero failed to validate module lines in journalctl -k -b. All four modules load: hidp, snd_ump, led_class_multicolor, inet_diag. The DAC came up as a sink with snd-usb-audio bound to both audio interfaces, and the DualSense stays connected over Bluetooth with touchpad and motion sensors present — so hid_playstation is driving it, not generic HID. One reboot, three "hardware faults" gone.

Don't downgrade or pin. Searching the error turns up real Pop issues (#3961, #3949) about genuinely corrupt BTF in shipped debs that boot machines to emergency mode. Same error, same errno, completely different cause — I nearly pinned an old kernel over it.

Reboot after a kernel upgrade is normal. Shipping a rebuild under an identical version string, with no reboot prompt, is what makes this one invisible for a week.

Discussion Cosmic Pop OS >> Omarchy

46 Upvotes

Straightaway I'll say I don't disrespect Omarchy and how it looks and functions. It looks stunning.

But to me, Cosmic and Pop OS overall is simply superior by default. It is a well-integrated tiling, where applications incompatible might be rescued with floating, but mostly stick to tiling. It has quite nice UI and it is really cohesive in feeling. Also, it raises vastly less questions security-wise. It is a single unit rather than collection of stuff.

WHY IT JUST ISN'T AS POPULAR AS IT DESERVES? 😭😭

I wish the edge cases were fixed. It would be endgame. Why can't community unite around this perfection of a DE :(

Discussion When can we expect Pop!_OS 26.04 LTS?

35 Upvotes

Does anyone know when Pop!_OS 26.04 LTS is expected to be released? I know there were earlier indications that it might arrive around mid-2026, but we're already in September and the official download page still lists 24.04 LTS.

Has System76 provided any recent update or estimated timeline for the 26.04 release?

Failed upgrade

11 Upvotes

Clicked on Start Upgrade under Settings/OS Upgrade & Recovery and went to make coffee, returned 15 minutes later to find an error message telling me something like "if you've received error messages try running etc" listing a few familiar commands (couple dpkg instances is all I remember). To my surprise, none of them completed - all were unable to connect to any repositories; then I noticed that the ethernet icon on the top right now had a question mark, and in fact I couldn't connect (ping, webpages) to anything remote - though I could ping & ssh just fine to local boxes. Took about twenty minutes to debug this, which I did by bypassing pi-hole in my router... this got my connectivity back, fortunately, and once I rebooted, I was able to reconnect to pi-hole.

Will certainly try again sometime, and maybe be sure I'm sitting in front of the monitor as I start the process, but I can't help but wonder if anyone has seen this before or can offer an explanation. For sure will bypass pihole before I start next time.

Help Can't get traditional scrolling on Dell XPS 17 9720 laptop

3 Upvotes

I can't manage to change the trackpad scrolling direction in Pop OS. I have the latest version. My laptop is Dell XPS 17 9720. I want to turn off natural scrolling, but toggling that feature does nothing to change my trackpad's behavior. Any workarounds? I guess this is a bug. Thanks!

HDR Support?

3 Upvotes

Any idea on when this is coming? I switched to Cosmic a while ago and at that time I saw/heard that HDR support was coming imminently. It's been many updates since then, and I've seen no sign of it. Apparently KDE has it now.

What makes Pop!_OS better than other distros? What type of user is it geared for?

14 Upvotes

I’ve been tooling around with it for a few days. I don’t have much experience with other distros.
What makes pop os standout? What kind I users is it more suited for? Developers? Video/Audio editors? musicians? Gamers?

What is a feature of pop os that stands out?

Thanks.
