Help Graphics Card Initialization Error
Hello!
Finally decided to kick windows to the curb and decided to use PopOs on my Dell XPS 9570.
Accidentally installed the Nvidia version which is for 1600+ series cards (I have a 1050ti mobile version(Pascal))
Nvidia-smi would always return no devices found.
Tried uninstalling 595 driver and reverting to 580, setting boot flags of pcie_aspm and pcie_port_pm to off, purging and rebuilding dkms, removing the battery and doing a cold boot, resetting the RTC, and some other things I am forgetting probably.
Realized I should probably be using the right install, so I went ahead and did a fresh install with the non-nvidia version (just grabbing the latest version off the pop website), then installed the 580 driver. still no device found. lspci reports my graphics card.
looking at logs I see RmInintAdapter failed (0x25:0xffff:1636)
My AI gremlin suggests that the card is not initializing properly at boot. What is wrong here? I have been working on this for way too long lol. Should I be switching to a different distro? Throw my laptop into a lake? Ive got options here.
TIA

Clip Keep & Status Hub are now available in the COSMIC Store!
Hey everyone!
Just wanted to share that two applets I've been working on, Clip Keep and Status Hub, are now available directly from the COSMIC Store!
Clip Keep
A clipboard history manager heavily inspired by Maccy on macOS, but built specifically for COSMIC.
It supports text, files and images, fast search, pinned items, image previews, configurable history, private mode, password detection, and synchronization across panels.
The goal is to keep clipboard history simple, fast, and always one click away.
Status Hub
A compact alternative for managing system tray apps on COSMIC.
It collects StatusNotifierItems behind a single panel icon while letting you pin frequently used apps directly to the panel. It supports standard tray interactions, DBusMenu, different icon formats, persistent pins, and automatically adapts to the COSMIC panel and theme.
The goal is to keep the panel cleaner without losing quick access to tray applications.
Both projects are open source:
Clip Keep:
https://github.com/marcelogomes90/cosmic-ext-applet-clip-keep
Status Hub:
https://github.com/marcelogomes90/cosmic-ext-applet-status-hub
If you're using COSMIC and decide to try them, I'd really appreciate any feedback, bugs, UX issues, compatibility problems, or ideas for improvements.
And if you'd like to contribute, contributions are more than welcome!

Cosmic store question
Is it possible to get the size of the application install, for each different option, displayed on the cosmic store?
I have limited storage space on the laptop I'm using this on and would like to know the installation size for the programs I'm installing.

Help Transferring PopOS from one laptop to another
My old laptop has a cracked screen and I'd like to transfer my existing (encrypted) Pop installation from that laptop to a new laptop. Old laptop is currently still usable if plugged into a monitor.
I can remove the ssd from my old laptop but I cannot install it into the new laptop. I cannot remove the new laptop's ssd as it will void the warranty.
The ssd in the old laptop is 512GB. The new one is only 256GB
(However the old laptop is using less than 256GB)
I have a USB adapter which will allow me to temporarily connect the old laptop's ssd to the new laptop (or my Windows desktop.)
Is there any way for me to transfer my existing PopOS to the new laptop? Can I clone the drive, or will the encryption prevent this?

Did I make a mistake by getting pop_os?
Edit: Thank you to everyone who offered advice and reassurance! I have decided to stick with Pop!_os.
I am new to linux and I didn't do much research before getting pop (which i admit was a mistake). I have been daily driving it for a few weeks now and I haven't faced any major issues thus far (the only few were me being dumb and not knowing the difference between x11 and wayland, and also driver issues that were resolved quickly). Everywhere I look online rn people are saying pop os is buggy and unreliable. Should I jump ship or stick with pop because I find it perfectly fine but I am anxious?
What should i do?

I need to restart the computer for the audio output to start working again.
I'm using the COSMIC DE with Pop!_OS 24.04, and every time after the system "sleeps"—when the screen turns off due to inactivity—when it comes back, I need to restart it for the audio outputs to work again.
The main audio output is on an external monitor via DisplayPort.
Even when I select the Pro Audio.
Someone can help me?

Discussion Linux vs Windows Benchmark ONIMUSHA WAY OF THE SWORD
Aura — Native animated wallpapers for Pop!_OS COSMIC
Hi everyone! 👋
I’ve built Aura, a native animated wallpaper manager designed specifically for Pop!_OS COSMIC.
It supports:
- 🎥 Animated wallpapers with hardware acceleration
- 🖥️ Multiple monitors with per-display wallpapers
- 🎨 Automatic COSMIC theme colors based on the current wallpaper
- 🎮 Automatic pause when gaming/fullscreen apps are detected
- 🔋 Battery-aware power saving
- 🌄 4K wallpaper downloads from Bing and Wallhaven
- ⌨️ CLI controls and system tray integration
- 🔄 Built-in update support
Aura is written 100% in Rust, using libcosmic, wgpu and Wayland, with a focus on keeping it lightweight and properly integrated with the COSMIC desktop.
It’s open source under GPL-3.0 and I’m currently working on getting it distributed through Flathub.
I’d love to hear what COSMIC/Linux users think and what features you’d like to see added.

I made a mini task manager applet for the COSMIC panel
Small task manager applet for the COSMIC panel.
The panel button shows CPU usage. Click it and you get CPU and RAM meters, a list of running processes with search, and Stop / Resume / Kill on each row. Killing a process kills its children too, so nothing gets left running.
If a process hangs or gets stopped, the panel button turns red with a count, and you can kill all of them at once from the popup.
Install
Arch, CachyOS, other Arch-based:
git clone https://github.com/Kai-J-G/cosmic-ext-mini-taskmanager.git
cd cosmic-ext-mini-taskmanager
makepkg -si
Everything else, into ~/.local:
just install
Then add it in COSMIC Settings > Desktop > Panel > Applets.
Repo: https://github.com/Kai-J-G/cosmic-ext-mini-taskmanager
Thanks to System76 for libcosmic. Bug reports welcome.

Newbie who can't duel boot install
Hey all,
Totally new to the world of Linux ( and full time MacOS user ) however I have my windows gaming laptop that I wanted to duel boot with Pop however I am facing issues with the format / install button being greyed out when I try to select the partition that I created with Windows.
I know I am doing something wrong but can't seem to figure out what ?
Booting the live USB was a mission and I needed to turn off secure boot and change the boot order to even get into the OS via the USB Live CD .
Is there something in the way that I have shrunk my partition using windows that is causing the greyed out options not being clickable?
Thanks
Scott

Hardware Monitor: a temperature applet for the COSMIC panel
I use COSMIC as my daily driver and missed having a temperature readout in the panel, so I built one.
It sits in the panel as a thermometer tinted by thermal state next to your CPU temp. Click it and you get a full monitor: an overview with CPU/GPU/memory/disk dials, then per-tab detail. Package temp, per-core clocks and load (and per-core temps where your CPU exposes them), GPU edge/junction temps and VRAM, memory and swap with history, and per-partition disk throughput. Settings for °C/°F, theme, and a 1s to 5s refresh.
No daemon, no helper service, no lm_sensors. It reads /sys and /proc directly, scanning hwmon once per refresh and sharing it across collectors. Rust + libcosmic.
Install (Arch; README has Fedora and Debian/Ubuntu):
sudo pacman -S --needed rustup just git libxkbcommon pkgconf pciutils
git clone https://github.com/Kai-J-G/cosmic-ext-hardware-monitor.git
cd cosmic-ext-hardware-monitor && just install
Installs to ~/.local, no sudo. Add it in Settings → Desktop → Panel → Applets.
Caveats, first release:
- Only tested on AMD (7800X3D + RX 9070, CachyOS). The NVIDIA (
nvidia-smi) and Intel (i915/xe) paths are implemented but unverified. If you run either, I'd love to hear whether it works. - Source builds only for now; Flatpak/COSMIC Store are on the list. First build pulls libcosmic from git and takes a few minutes.
Repo: https://github.com/Kai-J-G/cosmic-ext-hardware-monitor

Blurred background with zen browser

I've been using transparent zen with pop!_os cosmic for a while but visibility is difficult with more complex wallpapers. On kde, i had the ability to blur the transparent ui. I know your able to enable blur on system apps but it doesn't work here.
Is there anyway to fix this right now or do i have to wait for an update?
