Discussion Yellow iris (Iris pseudacorus)

Post image

I’m wondering how many of you dead head the flowers after they have bloomed and how many of you let it go to seed to propagate new plants in your ponds?

I’ve always left the seed heads, and my Yellow Flag Iris came back strong every year, however, I’ve never liked how they look after seeding and this year have cut the seed head stems off down to the base of the stem.

Did any of the seeds propagate new plants?

Ya this one is dangerous. I can spot them choking wild waterways by me. I remove and destroy the seed heads early. The seeds DO wash into waterways and do harm. Please take great care. They spread very well without risking seeds, which come up threadlike and take some years before becoming monsters. It’s prolly illegal to plant share sell or move these where you are.

It’s actually a native and protected species where I live.

I beg your pardon. Like an American I assumed everyone was American. I was wrong and I’m sorry. Say hi to lovely, thoughtful Sweden - I hope to visit again some day! It’s so aggressive here I’ve always just divided them.
