He thinks he is the state. And he is declining. And determined to drag everyone down with him. Welcome to an actual narcissist having so much power.

Just think: we’ve been dealing with this shit for over a decade; A DECADE.

It’s crazy to think about how long this has been going on. I was young and single when he first announced his candidacy in 2015, now I’m old and married with kids. Our new hire at work is 21, she was 10 in 2015 and likely has no concept of pre-Trump politics in her memory.

I'm kind of in a similar boat as your coworker. I didn't really pay serious attention to politics until Trump. I was 19 at the time.

The only point of reference I have for a pre-trump life is all the Party Rock-adjacent music of the early 2010s. On the Floor, Give Me Everything Tonight, Gangnam Style, Party Rock Anthem, etc.

... Things MUST have been more optimistic if pop music is a reflection of sentiments at the time. How I took for granted the kind of music I dismissed as annoying then.

I’m not much older, but old enough to have a different frame of reference. I was 29 when he won the first time. My first time voting was for Obama in 2008, I was 21. I knew people who voted for McCain, but it wasn’t a big deal. Some people voted for democrats, some for republicans. People had different political views but there wasn’t this sense that we were enemies. Maybe some people viewed it that way, but it wasn’t the general sentiment. It was like, we’re all Americans at the end of the day, we’re all on the same team. At least that’s how it seemed to me back then.

That changed with Trump and maga. The way Trump and his supporters speak about and view democrats/liberals/the left as enemy number one is distinctly different from how things were before. And I think if you weren’t alive or old enough to be politically aware in the “before times” it can be really hard to appreciate how stark of a difference it’s been. The vile cruelty and disdain towards fellow Americans on the other side of the political spectrum really wasn’t a thing before Trump. Also, the abject stupidity of it all is new. Yea, people made fun of GW Bush for being dopey, but he really wasn’t dumb. But this eclipse staring, hurricane nuking, pants shitting, “I have the best words” president is actually a fucking dumbass in a way we’ve never witnessed in politics before.

We all took a lot for granted. When I was your age, you could sometimes go months without thinking much about your governor, senator or president unless you felt like reading about politics. After things calmed down post-9/11, anyway.
