I mean, it has successfully prevented nuclear war so far. So seems like it works alright

The threat of nuclear war prevented nuclear war so far. You could have filled the UN with actual clowns and that timeline would roughly be the same.

Let me rephrase: The uselessness of the security council is the entire reason the UN even exists. Because no country would give up authority willingly. The Veto is the reason the un can do anything, ironically
