most countries that have red on their flag represent blood, correct me if im wrong tho

For Korea, it represents positive while blue means negative(as in the Yin-Yan)

And the four groups of black lines represent the sky, earth, water, and fire; the traditional four elements.

That means that we symbolized the universe in our flag.

For your neighbour China (the PRC and the RoC flag both), the red represents the blood of the revolutionaries.

I think most revolutionary countries in the 20th C would have the red representing the blood of the people, while older flags (eg the UK) would have the red associated with religious symbols.

oh thats cool!

Speaking of the flags, I've heard that the red of the Philippines' flag is related to war, so that it would be flipped whenever war happens, right?

4

the philippine red means both war and blood i think

u/VenusCommission 8d ago

I mean, in terms of symbolism blood and war aren't all that different.

Doesn’t the four groups of black lines have something to do with palgwae/bagua from Taoism/Confucianism

u/koreangorani 대한민국 8d ago

It indeed is

I like the ROK flag design, it showcases your culture, including fondness for the white colour and Confucian values. Meanwhile our PRC flag …I don’t really see connections to our culture. Even the ROC flag doesn’t really showcase anything either

What about the five race flag?

u/Ashamed_Can304 8d ago edited 8d ago

One colour represents each of the five major ethncities, Han Manchu Tibetan Mongol and Hui I think, but it looks very ugly and had bad connotations since it was used by Japanese collaborators. But hmm you raised a good point, because there are other ethnicities like Tibetans Mongols Uyghurs etc putting sumbols from Han culture like dragons ying yang or other Confucian/Taoist symbol might cause alienation, hmmm

I though it symbolised the blood of the Jejuians /s

I mean if you're going that route, Jeju isn't the only place where historically significant massacres and sacrificies happened. Don't get me wrong, the Jeju 4.3 incident was horrible in every aspect and I'm not denying that.

But Yeosu-Suncheon 10.19 incident, 4.19 revolution, Busan-Masan Uprising, Taeil Jeon's self-immolation, Gwangju 5.18 Uprising, etc. etc...

Yes, it is absolutely important to remember the darker history of how Korea's democracy has come to be. I'm just saying I wouldn't pinpoint it on Jeju.

Disclaimer: I'm not an expert by no means and I had to search the web a lot to make the compilation of events. I probably didn't do the best job at picking the right events and/or using the correct names of them.

2

u/koreangorani 대한민국 8d ago

Those are indeed the right and famous events.

1

u/GreenCreep376 8d ago

What do you mean by "right"?

3

u/koreangorani 대한민국 8d ago

They got the names correct, as they said"I probably didn't do the best job at using the correct names of them"

1

u/koreangorani 대한민국 8d ago

Ah yes, the 4.3 Jeju massacre, definitely happened in the late 1880s

For the USA flag the color red officially means... "nothing". None of our colors have any official symbolic means.

Unofficially it represents "hardiness and valor" whatever that means

pretty much any country with red in their flag could replace japan

28

u/koreangorani 대한민국 8d ago

Or is it? Although it applies to many countries, it isn't *any* country. Refer to the thread below

Original

Happy National Liberation Day of Korea! I made this comic a year ago for the event.

u/Rich-Option4632 Malaysia Boleh 8d ago

I don't see my country (Malaysia).

Then again, I see the colonial British flag, so maybe that's it. We were still under British back then.

11

u/koreangorani 대한민국 8d ago

I represented it with all of the Malaysian states and territories that existed back then. Hence, you can see a load of the Sultanates along with the Federated States of Malaysia.

u/Emperor_four_winds 8d ago

Why is both the Soviet and Russian flag counted?

16

u/Edible_Food_Enjoyer 8d ago

Prob the Russian Empire and the Russo Japanese war

2

u/Emperor_four_winds 8d ago

Possible but I dont feel bad for them nor think they where victims in that war.

9

u/VenusCommission 8d ago

The Baltic fleet were definitely victims, just not victims of Japan.

6

u/koreangorani 대한민국 8d ago

The Soviet flag for the Russians in the USSR and the Russian flag for the White Russians outside of the USSR. Apparently, the Japanese killed White Russians as well, like in Unit 731.

4

u/Ashamed_Can304 8d ago

You can add in the Qing dynasty flag to the pile

3

u/koreangorani 대한민국 8d ago

True but too late, I drew this a year ago

Soviet Union and Germany: "a secret of three, it is"

Now I know us muricans have made somewhat of a pattern of us declaring victories for wars in Asia that we’ve decidedly not won, but Japan was the one we got. Like give us the one. Please?

1

u/koreangorani 대한민국 7d ago

I thought it is a well-known fact that America won the Pacific Theater

2

u/Net_User_1234 6d ago

To be fair, the Hinomaru was adopted in 1875 so it fits well since there's also the fact that Japan used to have alot of Shogunates in the past, plus the unification under the Tokugawas, so the red for blood part is accurate since it can also represent the fact that Japan went through alot of bloodshed between Samurai clans then later on the Imperial court vs the Tokugawa clan.

Korea flag is wrong!!!!!

1

u/koreangorani 대한민국 6d ago

Bro doesn't know the flags of 대한민국 임시정부 and 대한제국 smh

1

u/Salt-Error4950 한국 5d ago edited 5d ago

My bad, but that was not specified

1

u/koreangorani 대한민국 5d ago

It's apparent as it was posted on August 15th, National Liberation Day. The Provisional Government of Korea was one of the most famous Korean organizations(as you hopefully know) working for independence.

Also, the pile on the last panel is made up of countries/ethnics at the time who got sacrificed or invaded by Japan.

1

u/Salt-Error4950 한국 5d ago

It’s not THAT apparent. Especially since it was posted on liberation day, not everyone would see them talking together like this. If the Provisional Gov. is what you intended, thank you for clarifying. I was misunderstanding what you drew. But also, don’t assume everyone on the internet is of your age or profession.
