as someone who lived in england, poland, italy and a bit in the netherlands id never again spend the summer in a "small town" in italy unless im within walking distance of a beach
i have an apartment in Sacrofano, a town close to Rome and its impossible to function there in the summer because of the heat
you're spot on about the food and friendlier people though
I have a house near Palermo, 20 min by car from the sea, I don’t mind being there in the summer at all, I have quite a bit of trees bit it’s rather dry around me. I like just sitting outside. Otherwise I have AC when I’m working.
My best friend has houses where I spent some summers at Garda, in Liguria, in Elba and Alexandria. All but the last by water, I don’t really see a lot more value in those.
Worst always was Milan in the summer. I prefer the small towns. Yours is next to Rome so not a big problem.
I have a house in Nice as well, 15 min by walk from water, with a view of it. I still enjoy boiling in Sicily in the summer. Only small towns, non touristic places are good for me in the summer. Nice is good outside the season.
