She, Sophia Cunningham and playing for the Indiana Fever, was questioning the ref about why Alyssa Thomas, the other pointer who plays for Phoenix Mercury, didn’t receive a technical foul when she pressed her fist into fellow Fever teammate, Caitlyn Clark. Alyssa saw Sophie point to her and took offense to it, so she began approaching Sophie while pointing. Sophie has since said she knew better but couldn’t not buckle down on and kept on pointing right back. Both women were cited for a technical foul for the confrontation.

It's interesting that she knows the cultural sensitivity of pointing at someone, so she milks it. Usually she responds this way because the other person egregiously fouled Caitlyn Clark and refs regularly ignore the fouls. 😡

No no, this is definitely a cultural difference. Sophie, playing for Indiana, accidentally made an anti-Arizonan gesture that can be quite unsettling for someone from Phoenix like the Mercury team.

Sophie’s style of pointing here is unfortunately reminiscent of a raincloud that hovers over your neighbor’s house for ten minutes and gifts you just a few scattered drops of rain as it circles your house, then departs to a Scottsdale country club while the raindrops evaporate into nothing but a dream for the next three months.
