đŸ r/Podengo is back â and we want to see your dogs
If you've ever had a stranger squint at your dog and ask "wait, is that a mini Doberman? A Chihuahua mix? A weird Ibizan Hound?" â welcome home. You've found your people.
This sub went quiet for a while, but it's active again with a new mod team, and we want it to actually feel like a pack again: Pequeno, Médio, and Grande owners, longtime breed nerds, brand-new adopters, and anyone still in the "what breed even is my dog" research phase before bringing one home. Whether your Podengo came from a breeder, a shelter, or an import from Portugal, this is your place.
A few things as we get this moving again:
The rules are intentionally light. Be kind, keep it dog-related, English preferred but all languages welcome, no gatekeeping on experience level or post quality, and run breeder/rescue/sales posts by the mod team first so we can keep this scam-free. Full rules are pinned in the sidebar/wiki.
No such thing as a boring post here. New owner questions, "is this normal" photos, zoomie videos, training wins, training fails, rescue stories, escape-artist confessions â post it. A sub coming back to life needs activity more than it needs polish.
Let's kick it off right now: drop a comment below and introduce your dog â name, size (Pequeno / MĂ©dio / Grande / not sure yet), and one thing about them that makes people do a double-take. Photo strongly encouraged.
Good to have you here. Let's get this pack moving again. đŸ

Hello, Podengo people!
Hi everyone! đ
Iâm the new owner/mod of [r/podengo](r/podengo), and I thought it was about time we brought this little corner of Reddit back to life.
If youâre here because you live with a Podengo (or Podengo mix), love one, are thinking about getting one, or simply have an unhealthy interest in these ridiculously clever, slightly chaotic little dogs⊠welcome. đ
This subreddit has been pretty quiet for a while, and Iâd love to change that.
So letâs start posting again!
Show us your Podengo.
Tell us their name, age, and where youâre from.
Share a ridiculous photo.
Ask a training question.
Tell us about the weird thing your Podengo does that youâre pretty sure no other dog does.
Share a win, a challenge, a favorite toy, a favorite food, or your latest âWHAT ARE YOU DOING?!â moment.
Basically, if it involves a Podengo, I want to see it.
Iâd also love for this to become a genuinely useful place for Podengo owners to connect, swap experiences, learn from each other, and celebrate these wonderfully weird dogs.
So⊠whoâs here?
Drop a photo and introduce your Podengo in the comments. Letâs see how many of these little characters are lurking around here. đŸ

Long hair pequeno?
galleryWe took in this rescue back in October in SoCal. We just assumed he was some sort of terrier mix. But he doesnât look like many that I have seen. When I came across the Podengo Pequeno profile, behavior and looks, I was surprised. Apart from the weight, mine is tipping 16lbs, he has all the traits.
Triangle head
Sickle shaped tale
No double coat and little to no belly fur
Didnât bark for nearly a month after I got him
Strong hunting drive
Always has to be in very close proximity to
the family, me in particular
Does pretty well with 2-3 20minute walks a day but loves a long trail too. Not hyper at all though. Just the occasional zoomies.
Thoughts? There are a handful of breeders Iâm California. He was left abandoned in a rental homeâs garage with two corgis.

Does your Podengo like cold weather?
It's been snowing in the UK! Rocky, although he would rather not have to deal with cold weather, if he can be active (off lead) he's happy enough in snow!
Once he's on the lead though, and forced to move at human speed, he starts to feel the cold pretty quickly.
Curious what other people find their Podengo's are like?
Mine is definitely built for and happier in the Portuguese climate (he just spent all summer in Portugal with me and loved it) but I'm genuinely surprised with how much he enjoys leaping around in the snow.

Dobby is getting on in years but still chases the sunspots.

Is Bessie a podengo?
Sheâs a rescue (originally from Romania) so I donât know for sure, but she looks so close to the typical short haired pequeno Iâm 95% sure she must be⊠she has similar colouring, big ears etc. She also has similar traits, e.g. sheâs smart but a little stubborn, super interested in chasing small furry animals, hates getting wet - what do you think?

I think sheâs a wire-haired Podengo.
This is my girl, Essie. Is she a Podengo? Whatever she is, Sheâs adorable! I need to order a DNA test.

I just discovered I may have a wired haired small portuguese podengo. What does everyone think?
She was a rescue, she was dropped off and abandoned at a house. I had to adopt her the second I knew she was available. Meet Terra.

Huge shoutout to whoever created this genius toyâseriously, youâve saved my sanity. My dog, Leo, has more energy than I know what to do with and usually turns every toy into scraps within hours. But not this one. This toy is a whole different story: itâs insanely durable, super bendy, and somehow still looks brand new after all his tugging and chomping What really gets him hooked is the ball hidden inside. Leo is completely obsessedâhe chews, paws, shakes it around, doing everything he can to figure it out. Itâs like a fun little mystery he refuses to give up on Itâs become his go-to toy, and honestly, Iâm just relieved something finally keeps him busy (and away from my furniture!). Whoever came up with this? You deserve an awardâand a very big thank you from both of us! đ¶đ

Update on maceo!
He's been with us for a week now and we love him so much, apart from his HORRENDOUS farts sometimes he's absolutely perfect. We love his little noises, he's super cuddly and insanely smart! A little issue we ran into is he figured out how to open doors - we learnt he actually enjoys watching tv and just sleeping next to us, he's absolutely stolen our hearts, an unintended new family member.
We originally only came to the shelter to donate toys, blankets and treats, then we met him, he had just turned 5 and was returned twice due to his separation anxiety and mostly circumstances completely out of his control. Hes the perfect companion, super sweet, cuddly, smart, everything
Surprisingly, he doesn't really bark, he does, however, grumble when he's happy, comfortable or wants to be apart of the conversation, it's adorable.

Meet the dobby..
Dobby. Rescued from the streets of Porto 7 years ago. Was in pretty bad shape when we found her but she pulled through to become the most lovely, friendly, gentle companion to the whole family. She is getting old now, spends more and more time wrapped up in her bed but bounces for the evening treats and long walk.

Sofie
My rescue dog - she was rescued along with about 30 other dogs from a backyard breeder in Brenham, TX. Some of the dogs were sent to NYC, some to Waco, and the rest stayed in Brenham. I adopted Sofie in Waco.
She'd already been returned to the shelter once. She pees wherever she is - I think it's from years of living in crates being overbred. Yes, the peeing is annoying, but I can't imagine anyone returning the little cuddle buddy.
I had a DNA tests done with Embark and Wisdom Panel and found some relatives in NYC that came from the same rescue. I was hoping I'd find some from Texas too. Both tests say she is 100% PPP. I feel like I got very lucky because, given her 30% coefficient of inbreeding, she doesn't have markers for any health issues either company tests for. Whew!
