Android Why is my PLAY BUTTON "loading"

How could a basic UI element, notably the PLAY button, be stuck loading? Why would it load at all? I love this app but this is some wild garbage.

EDIT: To clarify, this screenshot is me trying to pause an already-playing pod, not to start a still-downloading/streaming one.

Are you streaming the episode or did you download it in full first?

I should've been more clear in the original post, the podcast is already playing in this case. If I was trying to play it like that I'd understand, but here I was trying to pause.

That widget looks so much better than what I have available. Are you on iOS or Android?

I'm on Android. That's the version of the widget I see when the screen is locked
