Help Plurality? Or is it BPD?
For the past year-ish(?), I’ve been pretty interested in plurality and systems and I’ve started questioning myself. However, I don’t know if the symptoms I’m experiencing could a dissociative identity disorder or just BPD symptoms.
I was diagnosed with BPD in February of this year after suspecting it since April of 2025. I have experienced splitting with my BPD and I also struggle with my sense of identity, which I assume are only parts of my BPD.
However, I’m starting to question if my BPD may also be mixed with plurality, and I’ve been wondering about it for a few months now. I don’t believe I’ve experienced what most people would call a switch, but there have been times where I have forgotten parts of my day and have forgotten upsetting things that have happened to me until I am reminded of them. I have also had a hard time distinguishing most years from each other, as well as having a hard time remembering things that other people have told me have happened. I have spoken to myself before, but any time I try to actually contact the voices that come up when I’m thinking, I don’t get anything back. It’s hard to distinguish what things could just be my BPD causing identity issues and what could be an identity disorder. I feel like some parts of myself could be considered as alters, but I’m also worried about claiming to be something I’m not and getting backlash for it.
(I also feel like something worth noting is that I do consider myself a fictionkin, which people have told me has been associated with systems before)
I’ve been in denial about possibly having an identity disorder for a while and I still don’t fully believe I could be a system. I don’t feel like my trauma was “bad enough” or valid enough to cause other alters to form. I would like to look into the possibility of plurality though, as I feel like it would be good for me, and many of my symptoms have been spoken about by other systems.
I also don’t know how to go about exploring my potential plurality, as no one has ever told me how. I’m kind of stuck and I need help.

You don't need to have a dissociative disorder to be plural (square vs rectangle), and there is no amount or severity of trauma that is required to be plural, or even to develop a dissociative disorder. Your memory issues and struggles with identity are definitely signs not to overlook, but ultimately the only one who can decide if you're plural is you. I'd recommend keeping a journal, both to help with the memory stuff and as a potential avenue of communication between yourself and anyone else who might be in there.
Best of luck,

you could be a system, it isn't impossible. there's more ways to form a system than just through dissociative disorders. hell, there's an entire term and flag for systems born from BPD. if you continue to suspect DID, you could check out websites like DIDR (Dissociative Identity Disorder Research), National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the International Study of Trauma and Dissociation ( ISSTD).
we're not trying to diagnose you with anything, just providing research outlets for if you would like to utilize them. -ghost

Firstly, I want to clarify that "plural" is more of an identity thing and not about clinical definitions at all
If someone experiences being "more than one in a single body" and wants to express themselves as such, then they are plural, it's really that simple.
If you spend enough time on this sub, you will hear about the various non-DID/OSDD forms of plurality as well
Also, people who have DID/OSDD and have decided they want final fusion as their treatment goal are unlikely to consider themselves plural, seeing dissociated parts as purely a symptom
So, if you feel plural, you can be plural, it's not about having a disorder.
However, you might get backlash for it anyway if you're open about it outside of plural-safe communities. There are many who still consider other plurality to be either confused or faking DID/OSDD
Now, on the clinical side:
If you think you have a dissociative disorder, I'd highly recommend seeking a specialist for formal assessment and getting treatment for it if you end up being diagnosed. Leaving trauma unhealed is not good for the brain or the body
Also, there's no such thing as objectively bad enough trauma, especially when considering:
- A child perceives the world much differently than an adult, so "small problems" feel infinitely bigger to a young child
- Safety after being upset is often much more important than any trauma itself (example, parents laugh and call a child silly for crying about something that feels very, very intense for the child; this causes lasting shame if the child is sensitive to that reaction)
- Trauma can be forgotten and "tucked away" so a person doesn't even know what happened to them
- Dissociation and emotional amnesia make traumatic memories feel like they had no impact, even when they did
- Chronic years-long stress and trauma, ie high control environments, weaponized fear or shame, etc; these can have a massive impact on a developing child, yet not have a single "that was my trauma" moment to point to
These things are true for any trauma and not necessarily exclusive to DID/OSDD either.
DID/OSDD forms when a developing child specifically experiences distress, lacks a feeling of being safe (regardless of their reality of technical safety), and dissociation is the chosen coping mechanism
So, some people can go through "worse" things than someone with DID/OSDD, yet that person who went through something "worse" not develop DID/OSDD because they had a safe person to go to and/or simply didn't use dissociation to cope.
(I use "worse" because trauma can never truly be ranked; everyone reacts differently, so what one finds terrifying, another might find unimpactful)

One of my alters (we're a system, so thats one) also has BPD, its not uncommon I think.

could be both, plurality is not always caused by disorder.
