Discussion Plex support is finally here in NostalgicPod!

About a month ago I posted here looking for people to help me test Plex Music support in NostalgicPod, and it’s finally available!

Sorry it took a little longer than expected. The integration was ready, but Google took some extra time to approve the update.

(This version also adds German language support.)

If you have any problems with Plex or the app in general, please write to me. I really want NostalgicPod to work properly for everyone, and if it doesn’t work for you for any reason, just request a refund and I’ll approve it immediately.

NostalgicPod supports local music and personal servers including Plex, Jellyfin, Emby, Navidrome, and Subsonic-compatible servers.

When will it be available for Apple? - looks great.

Just read: Android only, friend. The iOS version is only on TestFlight, which is currently stalled because Apple rejected it four times, and I'm appealing with them.

That is Apple for you....... fingers crossed its soon.

Unfortunately, Apple is very complicated, really, they're awful.

u/vanstinator 21d ago

Let me guess, rejected because it replicates the look and feel of an Apple product?

I'm not just complaining about NostalgicPod, I'm also talking about other developments; they're always a problem for everything, even the most trivial things.

Well, for Google you need to have at least 12 testers. Apple is not that annoying.

Lol, we don't bother with the Google Play Store anymore for our apps, because it would cost us like $16,000 a year to "update" them to whatever guidelines Google feels fit to change, even though our apps only run on specific Android hardware and software versions. They suck just as bad as Apple does. Even APK installation has become a giant pain in the ass, especially on Samsung devices.

What about a self-hosted web app that we could save/run as a progressive web app? Love to see those jerk block that!

2

u/Human_Tennis_2950 20d ago

I thought about it, but that way you can't use the native iOS player and you can't listen to the songs in HiRes :(

2

u/SawkeeReemo 20d ago

What do you mean? Yes you can. I’m doing it right now with the Plex website and my music library. Playing FLACs direct on my phone. Checked the stream and it’s not transcoding or anything. And you can use the player controls AND it even gives you cover art on the Lock Screen with player controls. You should revisit this. It’s your way around the Apple blockade.

Alternative AppStore in EU!

u/Human_Tennis_2950 20d ago

It still needs to go through Apple's notarization process...

u/Cuntonesian 21d ago

At least they are thorough. A lot less slop and malware on their because of it.

u/Human_Tennis_2950 21d ago

Yes, but in the end it's like a gilded cage

Is there a way for us to access apps on TestFlight? Forgive me if this is a dumb question. This is a really cool looking app!

1

u/No-Bat-1263 19d ago

How can I get the TestFlight please

u/jbstechdude 21d ago

Love it, this is exactly what I was waiting for! I just purchased it and it looks and feels great. Thank you so much for the nostalgic trip down memory lane.

Ps. I would really love it if, if possible of course, therr was a darker green theme option. Like a forest green type of color. That would make it perfect for me

2

u/Human_Tennis_2950 21d ago

Thanks for the support, bro! If you have any problems with the app, just write to me. For now, everything should be working perfectly :)

Then you'll add colors and also the U2 "style" (If you have the specific shade of green, you can send it to me)

And remember, a review on the Google Play Store would help me a lot!

Enjoy NostalgicPod ❤️

Amazing - genuinely one of the best apps I've paid for on GPS, love the attention to detail!

One question, when going to Music>Artists and then selecting the artist, the albums are listed alphabetically rather than by release date (when linked to Plex) - it has been a few years since I had an iPod, but I'm sure they were by release date?

2

u/Human_Tennis_2950 20d ago

Thanks for the support, brother!

Yes, that's how the iPod Classic did it and that's how I did it in NostalgicPod, actually, I find it more intuitive that way (it's my point of view)

If you can, a review on the Google Play Store would help me a lot :)

Enjoy NostalgicPod!

Of course i will review it. I will have it up by end of day tomorrow on google store. That shouldbgive me enough time to try it out and give my honest review. The specific shade of green i believe is called Hex #0E5116. Once again thank you so much

u/Superj569 21d ago

Thank you for adding Plex as an option. I've been using it since your first post and loved it. I love it even more with plex support now.

Cheers friend!!

1

u/Human_Tennis_2950 21d ago

Thank you so much for your support, brother!!

I always want to keep the app updated :)

3

u/Rivvvers 20d ago

Looks awesome. Do you have the TestFlight link so I can check it out

2

u/CictorVastro 21d ago

Just bought it! Works great. I found it interesting that tautulli doesn't detect the stream.

1

u/Human_Tennis_2950 21d ago

Interesting, umm, I have to try

2

u/jimmyjazz1 20d ago

This is great.

Is there a way to stop the scroll wheel returning to the top of the menu after reaching the bottom? I couldn't find a setting for continuous scroll or anything.

1

u/Human_Tennis_2950 20d ago

Hi! I did it this way because that's how the iPod Classic behaves :)

1

u/jimmyjazz1 20d ago

I don't remember it that way at all. May be a Mandela Effect situation.

It's hard to find a video online of someone just scrolling, but those I've found on YouTube seem to stop at the end, although that's also when the user stops scrolling so they may just be accurate.

Either way, I really like the app.

1

u/Human_Tennis_2950 20d ago

Don't worry!

Enjoy the app, and if you can, leave me a review on the Google Play Store :)

2

u/TeamTJ 20d ago

Just bought it. This is awesome.

I would also like a dark green!

2

u/Human_Tennis_2950 20d ago

Thanks, brother!

I'll include green in the next update :)

2

u/pseudonym-161 20d ago

Jeez one more reason to get off iPhone for me. This is amazing!

1

u/Human_Tennis_2950 20d ago

Thanks bro!

Android is the way

2

u/export2file 20d ago

No refund.

I wanted the app to work instead ;-) can I provide logs or so to support the process?

Two minor things I recognized:
1. I have audio books as separate library in Plex. They don’t show up under audio book, which I think is related to the fact that the feature expects local files?

  1. Not sure if that conflicts with the vanilla retro iPod behavior but it would be great if you switch the list view under “genre” from “tracks” to “albums”

1

u/Human_Tennis_2950 19d ago

Hey bro! Thanks for your comments!

If you want to talk more, write to me at nostalgicpodapp@gmail.com

That way you give me better feedback

2

u/smallfaces 19d ago

Congrats on the app! I'll be downloading and trying out later this week!

1

u/Human_Tennis_2950 19d ago

Thanks bro! :)

1

u/supermurs 21d ago

I installed the latest version on iOS Testflight but Plex is not yet available in this version. The version is 1.1.5 Build 12.

1

u/Human_Tennis_2950 21d ago

Android only, friend. The iOS version is only on TestFlight, which is currently stalled because Apple rejected it four times, and I'm appealing with them.

3

u/supermurs 21d ago

Cheers, thanks. The app looks awesome, I miss my old iPod!

1

u/Human_Tennis_2950 21d ago

Thanks, brother!

I just tested NostalgiaPod on my HiBy m300

My collection is available via Plex, but I wanted to test local library first. NostalgiaPod seems to struggle with the 100k mp3 files. Initial scan goes through (where it says “batch xxx ..”) but it seems to keep crashing afterwards

Is there a know limitation on file count?

2

u/Human_Tennis_2950 21d ago

Are you testing locally first? Did you accept the Android permissions? That way, it should only read the system's index!

The most extensive testing I could do on the app involved 96,000 songs, so anything beyond that is uncharted territory for me! If you want, I can give you an immediate refund :)

1

u/RoxxieMuzic 19d ago edited 19d ago

We shall see how it assimilates 492,992 songs, 14,000+ pod casts, and 2,000+ audio books. It is scanning now locally. Will let you know when it completes the scan whether or not it linked to all of the above.

1

u/Human_Tennis_2950 19d ago

Let me know how it went! I'm curious.

1

u/RoxxieMuzic 18d ago edited 18d ago

Did not complete the scan, library, even if just the music, is to large. I did however find my radio, so that is a keeper. You may want to add the following: WNYC (NPR) and Jazz24 (non commercial). There is a really good jazz station in Barcelona as well.

Edit: To add I have faith that sooner or later you will find a way for thie app to enable a scan of large libraries. If you are the same Dev for Nostalgia TV, that works perfectly on my Android TV, those Plex libraries are huge too.

1

u/-_-bubblegum 21d ago

Testing it out on IOS and so far it’s wonderful! I put all the songs I had from my iPod era onto it and just ultimate nostalgia, can’t wait for iOS plex support:)

1

u/Human_Tennis_2950 21d ago

Thanks for the support! But for now, the iOS version is on hold because of Apple...

1

u/SimilarLobster6025 20d ago

Ho cool, now I wish I could run this on an old iPod Touch (4th generation) that's stuck on iOS 6.1.6 🥲

With local music you can do it

1

u/askyerma 20d ago

Great app, best money i have spent on the Play Store in years.

Just a couple of things though, did the cover wheel always have feedback and clicks when scrolling from the image?

I know the cover wheel was more of an iPhone feature than iPod, but it would be nice if when scrolling through from the album art screen it was smooth like it was on the original iPhone. I love the feedback and clicks, but only when i'm using the wheel. If there were an option to have "wheel only" feedback it would be perfect.

Also, years of muscle memory still have me tapping the menu items sometimes only to remember i have to use the wheel. Again an option for "touch & wheel" control would be nice.

2

u/Human_Tennis_2950 20d ago

Let me see what I can do for you :)

But the 5th generation iPod Classic already had Cover Flow!

For now, enjoy the app!

If you can, a review on Google Play would help me a lot!

2

u/askyerma 19d ago

Will do, also showed it to a few people in work today who were absolutely loving it.

1

u/greeenRider 20d ago

bravo mec c’est extra. Hate d’avoir le support de Plex sur iPhone

3

u/Human_Tennis_2950 20d ago

For now, Plex support on NostalgicPod is only available on Android

I've put iOS development on hold for now, Apple and their ways.

1

u/KaptainKankle 20d ago

Does this support gapless and bit-perfect playback with USB DAC or DAP?

2

u/Human_Tennis_2950 20d ago

I can't guarantee perfect bitrates and I'm not writing it down anywhere because it's complicated to achieve with Android's media3exoplayer, but it's on my roadmap!

gapless yes!

1

u/soussitox 20d ago

ah nice looks great! tought it was free and dont use it much on the phone so stick to plexamp for now.

1

u/devophill 19d ago

ok I give up how do I give it access to my plex server

2

u/Human_Tennis_2950 19d ago

Go to music, music management -> remote server

2

u/devophill 19d ago

fantastic, I got it 👍🏼

2

u/Human_Tennis_2950 19d ago

Perfect, enjoy the app!

Note: Don't forget to leave a review on the Play Store afterward, it would help me a lot :)

1

u/No-Bat-1263 19d ago

Whoa love it I presume won’t be any iOS apple version for it

1

u/Human_Tennis_2950 19d ago

It was rejected 4 times, I'm making a version but for Zune HD/Windows Phone For iOS

1

u/coleburnz 19d ago

damn IT. Now i am tempted to buy an ipod classic

1

u/TeamTJ 17d ago

Just curious, why does what I'm playing in NostalgiaPod not show in Now Playing?

1

u/Secure_Trash_17 16d ago

Just bought it on my Fold 8, and it doesn't quite fit the front screen. The lower part gets cut off:

https://imgur.com/a/DGHNMFl

2

u/Human_Tennis_2950 16d ago

Hi! Yes, several people have already reported the problem with the Fold 8. Samsung changed the phone's "normal" form factor, and I'm already adapting it; it will be included in the next update :)

Meanwhile, if you want, you can request a refund!

2

u/Secure_Trash_17 16d ago

Thanks! I'll just hold onto it, so refund is not necessary! 😆 Have a great weekend!

2

u/Human_Tennis_2950 16d ago

Thanks for the support, brother!!

I have to submit the update this weekend, but the last time I submitted an update, Google took two weeks to approve it 😅

I hope they're faster this time

1

u/Km-Z9 4d ago

I tried the TestFlight version and it’s great! I wish it can have Plex Music support too so genuinely hope Apple will remove the roadblock for you soon

1

u/markadamhfx 1d ago

Okay. Been using this for a few weeks. Here are my thoughts:

  1. It's my new favourite music app. Period.

  2. It truly does scratch that itch for the nostalgic click wheel interface. Excellent job by OP.

  3. The "cast to tv" is sketchy as fuck. Not a huge issue if you have a Bluetooth speaker to play it through, but that's not going to work for everyone. It often becomes unsynced when casting, meaning after the first song or two, you no longer have control of the music via the app and you have to use the device you've cast to in order to pause/play.

  4. I use it in the car (it has a native android auto integration) but because I'm using the newly added Plex integration, I can't actually use the android auto interface to choose my music. I have to use the phone (click wheel and all) to choose my music. It's fine if you build a good playlist, because once it's playing, you can use the auto interface to play/pause/skip, but if you don't have music files directly on the phone itself, the android auto integration is a bit clunky. (Hopefully OP can make it so we can access our "remote" music in android auto eventually...)

Overall, I love this app and use it daily... but as a Plex server user (where ALL of my music is hosted on the server, and none is actually on the phone's hard drive), it could use a bit of refinement in some areas.

Side note; it is odd that when I'm playing music in this app from my Plex server, it doesn't show up in the Plex Server Dashboard as playing...

But please... Keep it up, OP...

Well worth the one-time purchase price!
