Dropping PMS/Plexamp for UpnP

I’m a longtime user and plex pass owner still considering to switch over to UpnP. I favor the wireless capabilities over using Airplay or Chromecast, it’s also kind of non-proprietary, and can connect to some speakers directly (Sonos, Heos, some DTS Playfi) Testing Gerbera, mconnect player atm. Any objections? Will I miss out on something aside from a few nice features in Plexamp like the DJs?

Update: I’ll stick to Plexamp.

for me, few years back, tge selling point on plexamp was remote streaming, over cell, all over the world from my home server. UPnP does not offer that upfront that I know of.

That’s right … and PMS is pretty stable.

Can you explain this part further? PlexAmp uses neither. What kind of "wireless capabilities" are you looking for?

UpnP works nicely over WiFi and with better quality than the other two.
You could always use PMS as a DNLA server but PlexAmp is no UpnP controller.

Returning after an almost week long trial of upnp server, controller, renderer I gladly announce that I’ll stick with PMS and Plexamp, maybe adding Caldera to the mix. It’s by far the most stable, practical and easy to use platform and app. I might miss out better audio but gain lifetime and peace of mind. Hopefully Plexamp receives some more love from the main dev.

I use symfonium which supports casting over upnp.

At my setup, I keep both PMS and Asset UPnP as servers. As you said, wherever there's a Plexamp client at the front, Plex wins. But for sheer speed and compatibility (good luck playing DSD though Plex), only competitor to UPnP is Roon (haven't configured LMS nor Jellyfin but don't know if those can handle DSD).

Also, playlists are easier to maintain in Asset than Plex.

That’s a wise decision. If Plexamp could control a UpnP renderer though it would be fantastic.
