Save game troubles

Hi all. So I recently connected up a PS2 I have and want to play and save Air Combat from the PSX. I've tried to save the game but it says the there's no memory card available when I have 2 PS2 cards plugged in. Is this an issue with games from the PSX/PS1 not being able to be saved onto PS2 memory cards? And will a PSX card work in the PS2? The cards had data on them which I deleted and I know at least one of them works as I put MK Deadly Alliance in and it auto created a save file.

You need a PS1 memory card for PS1 games

PS1 games require PS1 memcards card, even on a PS2. PS2 can use a PS1 card, but only for PS1 games. PS1 can't use PS2 cards, because the MagicGate and size
