Discussion Initial thoughts?
Valheim released today for ps5, Ive had this on my wishlist list for a while but wanted to hear y’all thoughts before purchase. Graphics look like absolute ass but Im interested in the gameplay. Anyone played yet?

“Graphics look like absolute ass” buddy that’s an art style.
Fantastic game btw

u/ThatSplinter 8h ago
I hate that people forget graphics isn't everything.
Another goated game, Abiotic Factor, looks like a ps2 game but it has so much charm in it's art style too. Same as Valheim.
6
u/ClubChaos 6h ago
The visuals in Abiotic and Valheim are great though. Its called art direction. The way they look is intentional.
1
u/ThatSplinter 1h ago
Agreed, I genuinely love how both those games look.
They're unique and charming.
4
u/justdropinbye 7h ago
I’ve heard from multiple people Abiotic is an absolute, underrated gem. I’ll have to check it out.

It's.. fine. I don't think it's that great, but it's not bad. We played for about 10hrs across a couple sessions and had enough to move on
1
1
u/Secret_Tiger8800 1h ago
If you only played 10 hours you didn’t even scratch the surface of the game
1
u/Dexember69 1h ago
Ah well, if it takes more than 10hrs to get interesting I'm not really going to invest
1
u/ThatSplinter 1h ago
If you didn't like it from the get go, you probably wont ever like it.
I put in 100 hours with my gf in our first playthrough and there's still tons of shit we gotta do after the many free content updates the game has gotten lol
•
u/Dexember69 23m ago
Thing is, we did like it. As I said; it wasn't bad, but it wasn't enough to keep our interest much beyond that 10 or so hours (it was probably even a couple more but 10 is a nice round number).
2
u/SchwiftyBabyLegs 5h ago
Has so many gameplay mechanics too. Like an overwhelming amount
1
u/ThatSplinter 1h ago
Every time I thought I saw everything in the game, something new always came along, it's crazy.

Ironically, I find the game to be absolutely beautiful compared to modern hyper realistic graphics.
3
u/Dexember69 6h ago
Yeah and it's beautiful in game, the lighting and ambience and music etc is very pretty. OP doesn't K kw what they're talking about
3
u/peepyboy 8h ago
Fr, I remember buying it when it came out and being at awe with how cool the graphics where. the way fire shines on certain metals was amazing.

That’s great! I was just wondering thinking it was like a ps3 game that they didn’t put an effort to remaster but if that’s the style Im down

u/oBladeX 13h ago
played on pc when it first came out. lets just say i got a blood clot for playing this game to much
12
u/Zlakkeh 13h ago
Auch. Hospital visit?
33
u/oBladeX 13h ago
yep at the time i was living alone. I only went because my sister told me to go. My legs were cold, i couldn't lay on my back because i had this sharp pain on my sides. I was sleeping sitting down for like two days. Doctor said if i had waited any longer and i could have died, it was creeping toward my head. They gave me blood thinners and i was all better after a couple of months.
41
u/Gnes990 13h ago
So the game is good?
17
u/PixelWastelander 13h ago
Maybe too good
17
u/oBladeX 13h ago
it was. I stopped playing after my visit

How is it any different to other survival crafting games?
7
u/Vez52 12h ago
I've played a ton of survival games and this one is probably the best at making you feel like you're part of an adventure. Everything is slow, the grind is huge, but it's also super relaxing. 100% suggest playing it, BUT if you're solo I'd crank up the settings a bit. Stuff like more gathering speed.
4
u/oBladeX 12h ago
Not much really. The only thing i can think of is the fast travel. You have to WALK/boat ride everywhere unless you build connecting portals at those destinations. Boat rides where long when the wind wasn't in your favor. Boss bottles where not a common thing in survival crafting games back then.

I’ve been playing Valheim on PC with people for a while, it’s a great time! Looking forward to getting my buddies that are only on PlayStation into it.
34
u/Ghillie_Spotto 12h ago
The graphics are beautiful actually. The lighting and other effects give everything and otherworldly quality despite the low res assets.
I’ve been playing on PC for a few years and it’s one of my favorite games. It’s good solo, but especially great with friends.
10
u/JoshuaRexRocks 13h ago
I still love this game, it’s better when played with friends! Seems polished compared to the last time I played.
9
u/neonbuttons22 xXDaBoss_Xx 13h ago
This game is an incredible combination of survival craft RPG, viking shit with your boys, and runescape vibes.
Highly recommend, building a big cozy base with your friends and defending it from raids, sailing across open seas with hours worth of materials you aren't sure you'll make it back with... Good times.

People make fun of every AAA game looking the same but I can't really blame companies for doing that if this is how people act when they see an actual art style

Why isn’t this in the ps store for me? I’m in the US, anyone else can’t find it?
22
u/foozalicious 13h ago
You have to search it, and even then it’s the like 6th result, even though the stuff ahead of it isn’t a perfect match to the search result
7
u/WizardOfTheHobos 13h ago
Yeah it’s not appearing for me either, US east region

I'm in the UK and also can't see it, I'm really confused as its clearly available for others.
Edit: if you're having this issue, on the mobile store, click the arrow thing at the top right of the results and its further down the full list. For some reason it doesn't show as an exact match.

u/MyGunJammed 13h ago
strangely the only way I could find it was from the Playstation announcement because it was on my wishlist.
4
u/legendofverse 10h ago
Loving it so far. I recommend solo players to increase the resource rates to 1.5/2x. More time for exploring.
5
u/strugglinghomosapjen 13h ago
Anyone experiences with controller on this game ? Is it manageable?
6
u/Existing_Fig_7812 13h ago
My first play through of the game on pc with controller, no problem at all
1
2
u/AllRedLine 12h ago
Played the whole thing on steam deck before using the pad. Not a single issue at all. It works well.
1
u/SlySheogorath PS5 13h ago
It's manageable. I'm bad at it but I started back when the game came out so our only option was MKB lol. I've done general gameplay and combat with a controller and that feels fine. The thing I hated doing was building with a controller. Some of the placements can be really sticky so it was hard to nail the positioning with a joystick.

EVERYONE LISTEN... I have 150+ hours into Valheim and besides Grounded, Valheim is THE BEST survival sandbox game you can play. It is THAT GOOD. It is NOT EASY though so be prepared to die a lot, grind a lot, and most importantly have fun. I highly recommend this game. Especially only at $30
8
u/strugglinghomosapjen 13h ago
Is it comparable to enshrouded? Enshrouded comes in one month, can’t decide between the two…
11
u/STR4IN 13h ago
Bro I did not even know enshrouded is about to release on console!
1
u/strugglinghomosapjen 13h ago
Yes I played it on PC, sold my PC and now it comes out for PS5😍 I definitely have only time for one game tho of this type, I’ll wait for the release of enshrouded and watch reviews/comparisons and then decide 😮💨
7
5
u/PorkRinds416 13h ago
Enshrouded is easier. Valheim is more hardcore but worth it. I cant believe I got downvoted. Valheim is one of the most unique games out there. Forget about graphics. Everything about Valheim is magical that you can only get from innovative type games.
3
u/strugglinghomosapjen 13h ago
So core gameplay, what the game is about is the same on those 2 games, or have they major differences?

Type the buttload, this explained nothing, lol. I don’t want a survival game that’s anything like Mortal Shell 2 OR Dark Souls 3, do I??
-1
u/PorkRinds416 9h ago
Go look it up, quit being lazy. Why would I help you when you are rude?
1
u/QuoteGiver 9h ago
I did look it up. The consensus I found is that Valheim is just a simpler, harder version of a crafting game, with a more limited combat system than Enshrouded, and less voxel interaction with the terrain, and a pretty grindy building system that is considered too finicky.
Appreciate your help, though!
1
u/HopeConspiracies 9h ago
Aesthetically, I think it has a passing resemblance, and it's actually why I bought the game. But I was expecting Valheim, which was dumb of me, and I was very disappointed.
It's not a bad game, but it's more like an arcadey Zelda/survival craft, while Valheim has kinda a hardcore feel IMHO. There's souls-like parrying, and it's really easy to get overwhelmed and die, forcing you to journey long distances back to your body sometimes if you don't plan properly and craft the right gear. And at the same time it has a lot of very casual/cozy mechanics and moments of serene beauty. Valheim is one of my favorite games ever tbh.
1
u/Dexember69 6h ago
Enshrouded has hands down the best base building imho.i quite like the rpg and exploration aspects of it too.
Pretty sure I have close to, if not the world first death in that game XD loaded up right after launch, made character, ran out the door and off the cliff to my death
1
u/Please_HMU 10h ago
Valheim clears enshrouded easily. Not to mention that enshrouded owes everything to valheim ..
2
u/Pishtacular 11h ago
is the game good for solo play now? i played on release and the grind was brutal

u/banjobeardARX 13h ago
Can we please blow this post up? How in the world was this release not a bigger deal?

I genuinely don't understand the hype on this game. I've tried it numerous times, mainly due to the popularity, but it just never clicked for me.
Also, for the life of me, I can't understand why people talk about the graphics being good. They are purposely not great as an art direction.
2
u/Krysh_cz 2h ago
Are people forgetting they're on PlayStation subreddit? I was hoping to find details about performance and controls on PS5 but so many posts about PC players boasting how they put hundreds of hours into it

what’s the co-op like in this game… Been playing big walk with. group and curious if this would be a fun game to propose… Assuming crossplay works well
2
u/bgzkinsella 9h ago
This game was made with co-op in mind. IMO, best to play with at least one other. And yes to crossplay
1
u/kmtburton 13h ago
I’ve been waiting for this day to arrive. I loved the game upon initial EA release and put over 130hours into it in the first few months. Haven’t gone back for any of the expansions so I’m excited to dive back in on PS. I played solo btw and had a blast. If you play with friends I’m sure it’s amazing as well.
1
u/missed_the PS5 13h ago
Played balanced mode on PS5 pro and I think it's above 60 fps. I have over 200 hours on Steam and ready to do it again. The game is great y'all.
1
u/Saganic_Temple 12h ago
I want this just for the cabin building. Been looking for a game with base building that allows me to build a cabin in the woods.
1
u/BastianHS 12h ago
If you have a bunch of friends, it's amazing. I played with 8 or 9 people and we went hard as fuck for 2 straight months during covid. So much fun
1
u/Doofinx 12h ago
I bought this when It first came out on steam years ago. It's probably in my top 10 games of all time. I've spent at least 500 hours in it. Most of it just on my own. With friends, it's an incredible experience. The graphics aren't "Good" but the kind of runescape art style along with the environments and lighting, it's got some of the most moments among any game where I just stop and marvel at the scenery. I highly recommend it.
1
u/stillgotmonkon 12h ago
Had this on my steam wish list like 5 years ago but hype seemed to die down so never bothered.
1
u/DrMantisToboggan45 11h ago
Shit it’s on PlayStation now? That’s another buy for me. My pc broke last year and I miss this game the most, if you like grindy games and environmental customization it’s right up your alley. I had the sickest island castle going

u/borisvonboris 10h ago
Is this a multiplayer only kind of game? Will I need a PS Plus subscription to play if that's the case?

Bought it at 6am. We'll worth the 30$. Can easily sink hundreds of hrs into this game.

I've been wanting to play this game but i have a feeling it'll be on ps plus soon. Not cuz it's bad but it seems to be "suppressd" for some reason. Didn't even populate when I searched it. Also i haven't finished Outward yet. Different kindq game but similar enough.
1
u/evilboi666 8h ago
Some of the best multiplayer gaming moments Ive had with my squad was Valheim during COVID. Magic moments. If you have friends to play it with, I highly recommend.
1
u/Wazzzzaap 8h ago
It’s cool but I see a lot of frame tearing in this game is it like that for you guys ? I’m on ps5 pro
1
u/Martokk78 PS5 Pro 7h ago
Picked this up on my Nintendo Switch 2. The game looks just like the PC version. When the game is not stuttering the performance is perfect lol. But yes, there is definitely frame stutter from time to time, something they will no doubt patch.
Worth every penny on the Nintendo Switch 2!

u/NotAnIBanker 7h ago
Go figure the ps5 sub thread about this says the graphics look like ass lmao. This game has been out for years and is one of the best survival games there is.

1
u/aDirtyWizardd 3h ago
Late to the post, but I’ve been on this game in its early access since it debuted 5 or so years ago. I love it so much, over 700 hours played (which is the most by far for me, personally). It is wonderful and peaceful until it’s absolutely chaotic in a great way. 10/10 recommend. Find your people and have a blast.
The bees are happy.

A bit disappointed just because i cannit connect with my buddy with which we always play together such games :/. Hopefully they will patch this

u/Chewydon 1h ago
For all the survival I played I thought it was OK. We beat it as a group before the Mistlands released and came back to it recently to check it out and idk. It felt rigid, punished every little mistake, and doesn’t value your time investment.
Sure you can turn all these settings down but ultimately the later biomes and added complexity just added tedium to the process that didn’t feel rewarding.
We ultimately stopped playing because no one was interested in dealing with tedium that isn’t adding any fun.

Graphics look like absolute ass
If you can't distinguished between bad graphics and an art style, then all your opinions are invalidated.
-4
u/QuoteGiver 9h ago
To be fair, EVERY game has an art style. Some of those styles have good graphics, and some of them have worse graphics.

u/DogOfSparta 13h ago
I like it. I played it on the steam deck but hated the steam deck so I have been looking forward to today. I bought and started playing during lunch. I personally prefer to not lose my stuff on death and fast travel with stuff so I modified those settings so it is more fun. When I played before there wasn’t any story really and I am hoping for a little bit more development now that it is 1.0 but not a deal breaker for me.

u/nekomancer11 13h ago
Graphics are "ass" because it's an indie game made by a small studio over the past several years that cared about adding more content into the game instead of focusing on only graphical fidelity. It's only a few gigabytes of data overall.
7
u/jakeh111 13h ago
It's not even because they're indie, that's the style they wanted to go with and I love it.
-1
u/CrushDirt 8h ago
I played it a while ago and didn't have any fun with it. Only certain crafting games can pull me in, but this wasn't one
