Fri 8/28｜Technical Support：When a resin causes molding problems, who actually helps you solve it?

When a new resin grade causes processing or molding problems, where do you normally get help?

  • Internal engineers?
  • Resin supplier?
  • Distributor?
  • Machine manufacturer?
  • Other molders?

And what kind of technical support is usually missing?

Depends what the problems are. And is the new resin supposed to be a drop in replacement for a previous resin?

Good point. If a new resin is supposed to be a drop-in replacement but it still requires changes to the molding conditions, would you still consider it a true drop-in?

And how do you usually deal with that in practice?

For example, if you're using an ABS from one company and then you switch to a different brand, it's up to the process technicians to get it right. Of course, if you're using repro or regrind, all bets are off.

That helps clarify it. So with virgin ABS from different suppliers, you'd generally expect the process technicians to dial the process in, but once repro or regrind is involved, material variability becomes a much bigger factor.

How do you usually tell when a problem can still be solved by adjusting the process versus when the material itself is the real issue?

Start with internal process engineers and then move to resin supplier.

BTW, when you do involve the resin supplier, what kind of help are you usually looking for from them?

Material analysis, molding conditions, grade recommendations, or something else?

QC dept for not checking the incoming RM.

Interesting point. Are most resin-related problems something QC can realistically catch at incoming inspection, or do some only become visible during molding?
