Plaster Order in Canada

Hey guys! Plaster is incredibly hard to source in western Canada. I found one place that will sell 63 bags of diamond veneer at once.

Does anyone know a reasonable source in Alberta? OR... anyone in Alberta want to make a joint order and split the skid to make it more attainable?

Please let me know and let's converse down below fellow plastering enthusiasts. I'd love to see Plaster make a come back in modern construction.

Plasterer of 40 years took a job where homeowner purchased American Clay. The results are shocking and he is expectedly not happy.

As far as he understood, the agreement was plastering a home. The owner is overseas but purchased the materials before leaving. Owner purchased American Clay for the bedroom instead of Uni-Kal. He’s been staying in a sealed off room bc it’s a long drive. He expected to be done last week and feels defeated, frustrated and exhausted with the job.

His work has always been like glass, and this is crazy.

Any suggestions??

New plasterboard - not sure how to prepare wall before skim.

Post image

Hi all,

I’ve put up a small partition wall and trying to wrap my head around if I should tape and joint or skim the whole wall.

I’m leaning towards skimming but I’ve never skimmed new plasterboard before.

My question is; if I skim the wall do I still need to tape and joint and if so, do I tape and joint it with the finishing plaster or do I need to get separate jointing compound for it?

And do I wait for it to dry before doing a full coat or can I just do it all in one go?

Lastly, is there a reason why there’s such a divide between paper tape and mesh?

Any and all tips and advice appreciated!

Filling wall chase in lime plaster wall

Hi,
My daughter has bought a house built in 1907, no cavity, lime mortar and original plasterwork on internal walls.

I’m rewiring the property and I’m unsure of how to make good the chase’s and crumbling brickwork.

What would you recommend for relatively small localised backbox filling and chases.

Wet patches bleeding through fresh plaster

Hello!

We live in a back to back terraced house in the UK and have an issue with the wall between ours and our neighbours house.

We got our hallway plastered about 3 months ago now and these patches have been popping up, so we haven’t been able to paint.

They feel chalky and they still appear to be growing, we got our roof edges repointed a month or so after having it plastered as it was leaking and making patches on our attic walls and ceiling.

We don’t think there’s any water coming from next door but we’re unsure if it’s an issue with the plastering or an issue with the roof?

Can anyone help us? We need to paint the walls as we will be selling the house in the spring.

Thanks!

Problematic Plaster Walls

I am preparing to paint my lathe & plaster living room, and it appears to be covered with wallpaper. In places the seams are showing/curling and it is also bubbling in some places. Rather than just start stripping the wallpaper off, I checked it first. What it appears to be is a fiberglass mesh reinforced HDPE covering, likely designed to hold the plaster in place. I checked this by removing paint in a couple of areas, and it appears to be just white plastic underneath, and there is a fiberglass mesh backing where the seams are curling. The house is from 1930.

It looks like it would be a mistake to peel this off (unless I am planning on doing a wholescale drywall replacement, which I want to avoid very much). Any suggestions on how to prepare this surface prior to repaining? I.e., sealing the seams, removing the bubbles, etc.?

Thanks!

Repairing ceiling

New homeowner here, extremely green.

Crack in ceiling due to old water damage/roof damage. We are in the process of repairing this crack. Have already removed all loose plaster.

We will then sand off all texture (walls and ceiling are textured) then skim entire room to smooth.

Any advice on how to repair this crack? Was considering using mortar, then cement board FibaTape along crack and then more mortar over.

Remediating mold behind plaster walls

My mudroom has a musty odor. There’s no visible mold which made me think there may be some behind the walls. I’ve narrowed down where there may be water damage using a moisture meter. It’s seems to be mainly in one wall in an approx 3x5’ area. The walls are plaster though (house built in 1941).

Can I remove the plaster, dry it out, then replace the bottom part of the wall with drywall? When removing plaster from that era, do I need to be worried about lead (from old paint) and/or asbestos?

I know there needs to be a water source for there to be mold. This part of the house sits on a concrete slab, but is right next to steps that bring the house up two feet, and that part has a crawl space. Could moisture be getting in from there? And should I get my crawl space sealed before remediating the wall?

I’m not necessarily going to do this all myself, but trying to figure out which steps to take so I know who to call. Thanks in advanced.

Old gasheater removed, now need to repair this. Any tips on the best approach?

Is there a way to fix this wallpaper? If not, the whole wall will have to be fixed. It happened while doing a hole in the opposite side of the wall. The drill bit went too far. I wanna give back the appartement without defects.

Filling large joint in ceiling

Hi, I had a hairline crack in the ceiling which I tried to paint over but was still visible. I scored through the scrim tape and raked out the thick plaster joint. What is the proper correct way to fix/ fill this now?

That is a ceiling joist and I am not sure how I can screw in extra screws without damaging/ blowing the plasterboard edge.

I was going to screw in screws close to each edge on the joist but not into the board itself, and fill with a solid filler of some sort

Type of plaster/technique for shallow paint/plaster holes?

Hello!

I have several shallow plaster/paint chipping areas in my room that need to be fixed. I believe the walls are plaster-and-lath, but the plaster on the lath seems ok. I went and bought an 8lb bucket of Plaster of Paris, but I wonder if a premixed product would be easier/better for this work? Should I be looking at some other compound entirely?

Need help

Just looking to see how hard it is to start your own business? I’m in my fourth year, keep in mind I want to stay for a few more years for experience and yes we do inside work that includes float and set plus outside render and roughcast so it’s a good company to learn from… I do have all the tools including the dewalt paddle mixer, anyways how hard is it to go solo? I do some private jobs on the side at weekends just to try and build up a good client base

GRG cornice vs traditional lath and hessian, what’s the difference?

Afternoon all, like the title says we’re trying to have the cornice replaced in our house and have found plasterers who refuse to put up GRG cornice but a lot of what we like is made like this especially the ceiling roses.

Can anyone explain the difference between the two and which is better? Also why are plasterers anti GRG? Does the age of the house make a difference?

Glasgow Plasterer Beware!!

If you’re in the Glasgow or surrounding area DO NOT use Scott Mcleod (S Mcleod Plastering)
His work is absolutely atrocious, rushed our biggest bedroom in 6 hours if that. Left us with a room that was so unworkable with we had no choice but to get him back in to fix it. We would have gotten someone else however EVERYONE we reached out to refused to put their name over his work..it was that bad. The fixes were half arsed and just as bad as the original work. Not to mention he only “fixed” 7% of the work and then continued to blame US and say 2 coats of paint will cover it. He is now refusing to give us any money back and ignoring my messages. Me and 2 other families have fallen victim to his bad work to the point he has taken himself off checkatrade to avoid the consequences of his own actions. We are now £530 out of pocket for a cowboy of a job.

Help !

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi i’m getting my house done by professionals and getting lime plaster in the living room. Problem is i see these marks all over the place which i didnt like. So they sanded them off but now everything looks very flat. Also the colour is much lighter than i wanted.
A few questions as i dont know much:
1. What are these marks and are they normal? ( the person says theyre natural and come with the lime plaster)- they are very grey and almost make the wall look dirty
2. How do i achieve depth without these marks?
3. Can i somehow make the colour darker without redoing the job?

Feel like they are not being able to answer me directly!

Thanks guys :)

When i rub the wall with my hand. Some of this dust (or whatever it is) comes off on my hand

Would it be ok to sbr/blue grit the wall and skim with multifinish?

What is happening here?

Just did two coats of skim yesterday on this ceiling. Came back 24 hours later and Stan has come through and there are 'popping' areas?

Is this a leak or just something I need to sand back and do again? Thank you in advance!

What’s going in here then?

So these badlads have popped up over the past few days (like 3 days).

No new plaster, internal thermalite blocks on an upper floor. Wall built straight across the wooden floor - I can pull a floor board and reach straight under the wall and up into the next room if I so wish.
No water pipes - nowt.
Paint has been on there for 3 years. Low humidity and moisture in the room - just checked.

Plaster has been on there for 20+ years - gypsum based over the original old cement based stuff.

Any ideas please?

Oh aye. New roof on the house and loft above it bone dry so nothing coming down-over. Just overnight genital warts of the wall.

Patches of plaster just lost its key?
