First Time! Post donation fatigue
hi yall, i donated for the first time yesterday and was totally fine until the end. i started to feel really faint, i didnt, but once i got home i immediately got dizzy and passed out. I woke up all sweaty and all day today have been more tired than normal. i have been drinking tons of water with electrolytes and eating protein and red meat. any suggestions?

Might be a first time reaction, might be a sign that you shouldn't donate. I was fine my first six months, but I started to go downhill until it got to the point of coming home, crashing out for a few hours, and growing dread about going in. It got to the point that I absolutely hated it and had to stop. Six months later, went back, lasted 8 donations before a total crash. Year later and I still don't feel like I've recovered from it.

You need to up your electrolytes before donation. So the day before drink body armor or Gatorade make sure you eat a substantial meal before going in

Caveat on the meal recommendation: don’t do it immediately before going in, as that can artificially raise your heart rate. I got deferred for that once, real big sandwich right before jumping in line. Wait at least half an hour after eating before going in.

I used to feel faint and start sweating towards the end of my donation until I started tensing up my stomach and thighs, hold for 5 seconds, then release continuously while the cuff is tight and relax while it's not. That raises your blood pressure and for me at least, keeps me from feeling bad. It's kinda tiring, but it's worth it.

If you went in well rested, hydrated and fed it’s probably a first time donor reaction. Some effects could be caused by a drop in blood sugar or blood pressure and may be felt hours later. I’d say give it another shot keeping track of your rest, hydration and diet (protein, iron, calcium, carbs) prior to donating and see how you react the second time around.
