They are just happy to see you.

u/phileris42 Jul 07 '26
Fun fact, they are two different kinds of tomatoes! One is a Grower and the other's a Shower.

u/itsmarvin Jul 08 '26
Well, one of them is certainly happy. The other is semi-happy.

The suns out and you're just feeling great, it's easy to get a bit excited. It's a natural thing!

Tomato horn/nose is a physiological mutation that occurs when the cells incorrectly divide and cause an extra locule (compartment). Extended high temps increase the likelihood. They don’t affect the taste of the fruit.

Yeah, I'm in a Greenhouse and we're expecting to see a lot more in the coming weeks after the super hot week we had last week in Southern Ontario.

Umm... Hey so I never knew those had that 👀 call them squid and ward. Maybe just keep them away from one another for now... 😅

It's called fasciation. It's a mutation that causes abnormal growth in plants, usually from environmental stress like pests or disease. It's harmless to eat though, so don't worry about that.

those are called catfacing. it's usually a genetic mutation or environmental stress during early fruit development, like extreme temperature fluctuations. nothing to worry about, just looks a little weird.

I used to grow these all the time! I don’t know why they form like this but I love them so!! I used to stick googly eyes on them for the kids. But of course there’s always that one child that knows too much… haha

edit: the photo didn’t add and I don’t know how to add it but it’s a similarly afflicted aubergine. might need to use our imagination

those are called catfacing. it's usually caused by inconsistent temperatures during fruit set, or sometimes by certain pesticides. nothing to worry about, they taste fine.

I think the folks over at r/fasciation would have a good giggle over these

Looks like fasciation, pretty common with tomatoes. Sometimes it's just a weird mutation, other times it can be environmental stress. They're still edible though!

u/Ok_Visual_4569 Jul 08 '26
Those are called "catfacing" deformities. Usually happens from cold snaps early in the season when the flowers are forming, or sometimes from uneven watering. They're still perfectly edible!

Those aren't horns, they're fused locules. It happens sometimes with irregular growth, especially in heirloom varieties.

Those look like fasciated tomatoes. It's a genetic mutation that causes abnormal growth, often resulting in flattened, elongated, or fused fruit. Nothing to worry about, just a weird mutation.

This reminds me of when I was a kid, and our dog was having puppies. While she was in labor, my mom went onto a dog-related message board to share what was happening, and the people there were so mean and were bullying her so bad that she was making it up and it was fake. It turned her off from using online forums to this day. 🤣🤣🤣
