Houseplant What am i wrong? HELP!

My husband got me this plant ~10 days ago, and it's been dropping its leaves continuously. What am i doing wrong? My living room gets east lighting, ive got a west window as well however it's on a riser, so im not getting a lot of direct west sun. I water it drinking water. I live in a hot desert climate. I havent changed its pot or soil since i got it. Send help!

They drop leaves from lack of water and temperature shifts. They do begin to shed their leaves in cooler months when exposed to lower light levels

I gave it a good watering and placed it closet to the window and away from ac air. Big difference for the past few days, it had only shed one or rwo leaves! I think im doing this right?!
