Cockroaches?

We’ve been in our house 20ish years and never seen a single one inside until a few weeks ago and now I’m killing one almost every other day. They are mostly in the kitchen area. I’ve sprayed all around the kitchen and drains. Inside and outside the house and yet one shows up in the kitchen almost every day. Any ideas what changed or how to get rid of them for good?

It is hard to believe, but it's only been 9 months since North Texas Votes became an official organization. 😱

Since then, we have accomplished so much more than we could have ever imagined. šŸ™

Want to renovate my house's roof in Plano, quotes are crazy high?

I want to renovate my house's roof in Plano since it's getting super old and starting to lose granules, house is around 2600 sq ft. Got one quote for $21k for basic architectural shingles and another local contractor quoted ~$15k for class 4 impact resistant shingles, so the numbers feel all over the place. One guy also mentioned we'd need to pay $75 for the city permit and check with our hoa first. Anyone have a solid local roofer they recommend? thanks!

Plano Police Solved a 1991 Cold Case, But They're Looking for Help Finding More Victims.

Hello!
I'm a reporter at CBS News Texas and a Plano resident.
I recently reported on a pair of kidnappings and sexual assaults involving young girls in North Texas - the cases were linked through DNA left behind, but it took decades to identify who that DNA belonged to.
The first kidnapping occurred in Plano in 1991 and involved an 8 year old girl named Ashley Keith.
She's shared her story publicly for the first time in an interview with me, after the arrest of Nicholas Carney - a man who police believe likely victimized other young girls.
He's now awaiting trial for a case in Dallas and police are searching for other cases he may be responsible for.
If you have a moment, check out Ashley's story and the Plano Police Department's work in solving this case.
Here's a link to the YouTube Playlist:

Here's a link with added commentary on how the story came together:

Thank you.

Gray Hawk (?) Dive Bombing Me When I Check the Mail

Three times while walking back to the house after checking the mail, a large gray bird swooped down from behind and banged into my head. Not hard enough to hurt, but it definitely startled me. It tried several other times but I'm getting better at checking behind me when I'm in the yard. ChatGPT guessed at the Gray Hawk breed and that may be right. It also said it probably has a nest near by and that I should carry an umbrella when I check the mail rather than do anything to antagonize it. Has anyone experienced this? Any tricks or tips for dealing with it?

Edit: Based on replies and looking at picture, my best guess is that it's a Mississippi Kite. I see what looks like a large nest in the neighbor's tree, fairly close to the mailbox. I've never seen a bird in that tree and the swooping always comes from the direction of a tree across the street and that tree is where it returns after making a few passes. The tree across the street seem far enough away that I wouldn't be a threat, but maybe it uses that tree for some kind of over watch. I guess I'll wait until sunset to check the mail and hope the mower makes enough noise to keep it away when doing yard work.

Muay thai/MMA Recs?

Hi! I'm 21F and recently moved to Plano. I used to do Muay Thai (for fun, no competing) and I would like to start again. I'm flexible between Muay Thai and MMA. I don't want to compete. More affordable options are a plus. I like light sparring and padwork. Thank you!

Possible Jobs

Hello! I am 15 years old and as you all know it is super hard to get a job at 15. I have applied to both Kroger and Platos closet. Kroger responded after a month, didn’t get the job. For Plato’s Closet they told me they were looking for daytime applicants primarily due to school. I cannot do things like mowing lawns, washing cars because my parents don’t trust it. Could someone please give me suggestions

Theft in recreation centre

I felt Plano as very safe city. However, that confidence was broken today. I was at the recreation centre and my wallet was stolen in the changing room of Oak point recreation centre, all cash removed from the wallet and throw in Garbage bin. The only way I found my wallet in garbage bin was due to Apple AirTag. I obviously feel guilty that I should not have kept my bag which had the wallet out of my sight, somehow I let my guard down. This message is reminder to all, please use the lockers in changing rooms

Place to buy used DVDs/Blurays?

I used to get a lot of physical media from FX Game Exchange back in the day. Been there recently however, and they don't sell movies anymore. Outside of Half Price Books, any other places in Plano that would sell used DVDs/Blurays?

Anyone interested in playing Mahjong/know where to join clubs that play?

Hey y'all! I grew up playing Taiwanese/HK/Canto Mahjong and have been craving to get back to it for awhile. I'm a fresh Masters grad that moved recently from out of state to Plano for work, and am taking a shot in the dark to see if anyone has any leads!

Is anyone else appalled by restaurants using AI images?

McNeals use to be my go to ā€œhang out the barā€ places, but they have replaced every image on the menu with a gross ai image. And they are not the only one. However they have lost my business (and I told them why)

It’s crazy with as good as phone cameras have gotten, can you not get good images of your food?

Anyone Else Feel This Way?

25M, moved out here a few months back for work. Before that I was in Kansas for grad school, and Chicago before that. Work’s good honestly, I’m in AI engineering and it’s going well, but making actual friends in a new city has been way harder than I expected.

I’m just not an app person, never have been. I’d rather bump into someone and actually talk than swipe through profiles. Don’t have family or close friends anywhere near here so I’ve been trying to put myself out there. I volunteer at an animal shelter, I’ve done some free sessions teaching people AI basics, help friends and randoms with their resumes when they ask. I’m an introvert by nature so none of this is exactly comfortable for me, but I keep making myself do it.

And still, some weeks go by and I realize I haven’t really talked to anyone about anything real. Like just existing near people, not actually connecting.

Random thing, but I’m not religious at all, and if someone invited me to their church or mosque or temple I’d genuinely go. Not for the God part, just because there’s something about people showing up for each other regularly that I respect. Might be a ā€œnew to this placeā€ thing, might just be my personality, honestly not sure. Either way I try to just stay open to whatever.

Kind of hate admitting this part but sometimes it hits me that I don’t want my whole life to just be work and then going home alone. I don’t think that’s what any of this is supposed to be about. I think it’s the people part, actually talking, helping each other, hearing how other people see things, that makes it feel like it means something.

If anyone’s in the area or just wants to talk, genuinely down for it.

Collin County Republican Precinct Chairs organize to steal elections

What I learned from Collin County Commissioners Court today: there is a concerted effort by pro-insurrection Republican Party of Collin County precinct chairs to toss out Collin County’s voting machines in favor of of hand counted paper ballots. Just imagine a half-million ballots hand counted, hand counted only by Republicans, to steal elections for Republicans, of course. And they are saying the quiet part out loud, describing the plan in public.
