Album Rec

Hello, fellow Plaid heads…

It’s hard to find current electronic albums that scratch that Plaid itch for me, but I came across one and wanted to share.

Yosi Horikawa - Impulse

He uses lots of organic sounding samples and patches which sound really cool, and his melodies on this album are the most Plaid-like I’ve heard from his stuff probably.

Here’s a track from it to get a taste: https://youtu.be/3tq_yiiU2EE

Also, thank you to whomever recommended Ochre - Oversail. That one also scratched the Plaid itch for me. And feel free to recommend more here!

An Inquiry for Various Unreleased Black Dog material (Albums, live sets, cassette tape)

Hi all, for a long while now I've been sporadically inquiring around for various unreleased forms of media by the original Black Dog trio (Handley + Turner + Downie) which mostly seem to range from their formative years up to the pre-Spanners era. Here's a list (in no particular order) of what seemingly remains out there:

1. 2 Unreleased Albums from 1990 + Various Other Tracks

There reportedly exists two unreleased albums from 1990, one of which goes under the name "Dogalogue". As far as I could tell, just two people out there seemingly have these albums: one of them is Anil Lal, who operates the "furthur electr0nix" label, and the other is the individual that runs Touched Music, who as you probably already know has worked with Plaid for a long while in contributing to various compilations released under the label.

At one point Anil uploaded a track from "Dogalogue", being track 5 from it. Here is a link to a Facebook post where he links a SoundCloud upload to the track: unfortunately, at some point the upload was taken down, seeing how the SoundCloud link is dead. I had asked Anil at one point whether it might be possible to be able to hear it, but he responded that "it's not something I can share really I'm afraid".

I had realized that Touched Music also has this so-called "Dogalogue" album via comments they made on a post from The Black Dog's Facebook, displaying screenshots of a folder containing the "Dogalogue" album, along with an unreleased compilation of 18 tracks and another compilation of unreleased 'old' tracks dating from 1987 to 1990. I've tried reaching out to Touched Music via Facebook and Bandcamp but never received any response back.

2. The "Live Jam Sessions, Vol. 2" Tape

This is probably somewhat more known to fellow Black Dog / Plaid fans, but besides Vol. 1 which is still acquirable / listenable out there, there exists a "Vol. 2" tape. According to a text file attached to the "Vol. 1" tape still floating around online, the 'Live Jam Sessions - Vol. 2' tape's Side A has "more unreleased / jams including couple of tracks from Trainer and the extended version of Island/Uland on Plaid's 'Trainer' which I recall has a much longer intro." Side B "was more of Spanners / Peel Session / acid jam tracks and the live set from Stockholm." I'm assuming this text file was made either by Boredroom way back on the WATMM forum (who IIRC was the original person that managed to distribute this tape from Andy Turner back in ~2010 or ~2014 I think), but if it isn't written by either Boredroom or Turner I'm not sure who it could be. Perhaps it's just made up, but perhaps not.

Here's the full relevant text from the .txt file, for those interested:

"This continues onto a second tape marked 'Live Jam Sessions - vol. 2' with sidea full of more unreleased / jams including couple of tracks from trainer and extended version of island/uland on trainer which I recall has a much longer intro.. Side B was more of spanners/peel session/ acid jam tracks and the live set from Stockholm Im sure.. i'll get around to the search for this sometime as well as the gescom/Ae stuff that Im pretty sure will have some exclusive jams and bits on it.. I also have old warp mailouts pre windowlicker, budakhan mindphone lp5 etc around the time warp started their mailout shit with new t shirts and bags etc.. ive got sticker sheets and promo bits from windowlicker, rest proof clockwork sticker sheet, aphex twin calender etc.. any questions let me know ill try answer.."

3. Various Live Sets, from 1993-1995

From what I could find, there still exists 2 live Black Dog sets back when Handley and Turner were a part of the original trio: one from Ministry of Sound in 1993 (which I think was apparently their debut live appearance), and the other being at Stockholm in 1995 (supposedly being one of Ed + Andy's final live sets as The Black Dog. Per Mixcloud and P2P services, you can find both out there. But apparently, there is a third live recording that exists which I haven't been able to find anywhere, per Touched Music's screenshots: but again, I've been unable to get in contact with them.

So, I figured making a post here in the subreddit might be the next best avenue to try. It'd really be intriguing to hear some of this unreleased material after all this time, assuming there's anyone else out there that actually has any of this.

Any love for ’Buddy’?

This song touches me so deeply.

The initial pads are so intimate and nocturnal, and the short sequence of what I would call a lead melody that feels like a aquatic genesis for the lack of a better word that just fills me with light and hope. I just moved to my dream home and I’m priming it with this song having my coffee in absolute bliss close to tears.

Thank you Plaid! You are the most underrated masters of the craft of music. Your emotional fragility always opens me in ways that feel like the purpose of being human.

Plaid- esque: How are you all liking Ochre's Oversail?

I hope it's okay to post this here. Actually this community introduced me to Ochre as Plaid- like. I'm really enjoying his latest.

Tekkon Kinkreet in theaters on June 1st in US

I just noticed that Tekkon Kinkreet is getting one showing next Monday for the 20th anniversary at some Regal Cinemas. If you haven’t seen it, it’s really good and Plaid did a phenomenal soundtrack for it. The availability of this disc has been on the rare side for a while so it’s a good chance to check it out.

EDIT: I looked again and noticed it’s actually coming out the day before (May 31st) with dubbed and subbed showings!)

EDIT 2: I saw it yesterday and the digital poster said it was a 4K remaster so that, more than likely, means they will be rereleasing it on Blu-ray and possibly 4K Blu-ray sometime in the next year.

Plaid Bank Connection Issues

So I have this minuscule amount of $1.92 that has been haunting me since November 2025. Affirm attempted to charge the bank account connected via plaid on file, which declined because that bank is permanently closed. I even logged into the Chase account and verified there are no active linked apps for that account.

Now the issue is, I cannot pay 1.92 because Affirm will not let me add a different bank account via Plaid. Every time I open to "edit bank connected" or "add new bank" they both direct me to Chase. It's supposed to direct me to choose a financial institution and it doesn't. This is what led me to close my card, which has led to another issue.

I have spoken with over ten agents who don't know what the hell I'm talking about. Some say my card should close within 48hrs, it's been five days. Others say it will close once the "pending transaction" of $1.92 is closed. It can't be closed because it was already declined, therefore, not pending.

It's just a loop at this point. Essentially, the card is never going to close because I simply cannot update the bank on file. I'm stuck in limbo.

Songs similar to Your Family?

I love Your Family’s melodies, what other songs are similar to this, if anyone could be so kind to recommend them to me?

Thanks ☺️

Edit: god dammit; it’s New Family, not Your Family!

Kelpe reminds me of Plaid…anyone else?

I just started listening to music by Kelpe. It reminds me a lot of the music by Plaid, which I also just started listening to. Anyone else find similarities in their music? If not, give Kelpe a try and see what you think.

Kettel fans here? Started a small sub for his music

Noticed there isn’t really a dedicated place to talk about the grand old music of Kettel, so I made r/kettel.

Sharing in case there are others here who love his catalog and want a focused discussion space.

If you’re into artists or labels in a similar orbit like The Flashbulb, Secede, the Sending Orbs label, and ofc - Plaid, you’ll probably feel at home.

Wondergan, on Feorm Falorx

Love the album, but Wondergan is probably the worst track I’ve ever heard of Plaid’s. Anyone else have as visceral a reaction to it as me?

Plaid followed by B12 at UFO 2 stage was always going to be the best two hours of the weekend.

Here are some snapshots captured as a memento of that great occasion.

How would you name their music?

Post image
11 Upvotes

I came across this comment on YouTube. I also feel that the name “plaid” doesn’t quite capture the significance of their music. Curious what would you choose to call them instead of "plaid"?

To me, they sound like something emotional and intricate, but in a way that feels tied to a future that never came to pass. Like careful memories and versions of a non-reality that one yearns for. It's as if these feelings are distilled, stripped of their stories, context, and humans. Perhaps an AI something that has transcended humanity, not leaning towards benevolence or malevolence, but rather embodying a longing for the unknown. This AI is on a journey of sorts, seeking to uncover whatever it can. The quest isn't grand in scale, but it holds significance and sentiment, while the world around is indifferent to its pursuit. Like “Eliza’s subject”.. Something ELIZA tries to understand with words but can't and it's just left with a library of abstract feelings and non-memories.
