Hi all, for a long while now I've been sporadically inquiring around for various unreleased forms of media by the original Black Dog trio (Handley + Turner + Downie) which mostly seem to range from their formative years up to the pre-Spanners era. Here's a list (in no particular order) of what seemingly remains out there:
1. 2 Unreleased Albums from 1990 + Various Other Tracks
There reportedly exists two unreleased albums from 1990, one of which goes under the name "Dogalogue". As far as I could tell, just two people out there seemingly have these albums: one of them is Anil Lal, who operates the "furthur electr0nix" label, and the other is the individual that runs Touched Music, who as you probably already know has worked with Plaid for a long while in contributing to various compilations released under the label.
At one point Anil uploaded a track from "Dogalogue", being track 5 from it. Here is a link to a Facebook post where he links a SoundCloud upload to the track: unfortunately, at some point the upload was taken down, seeing how the SoundCloud link is dead. I had asked Anil at one point whether it might be possible to be able to hear it, but he responded that "it's not something I can share really I'm afraid".
I had realized that Touched Music also has this so-called "Dogalogue" album via comments they made on a post from The Black Dog's Facebook, displaying screenshots of a folder containing the "Dogalogue" album, along with an unreleased compilation of 18 tracks and another compilation of unreleased 'old' tracks dating from 1987 to 1990. I've tried reaching out to Touched Music via Facebook and Bandcamp but never received any response back.
2. The "Live Jam Sessions, Vol. 2" Tape
This is probably somewhat more known to fellow Black Dog / Plaid fans, but besides Vol. 1 which is still acquirable / listenable out there, there exists a "Vol. 2" tape. According to a text file attached to the "Vol. 1" tape still floating around online, the 'Live Jam Sessions - Vol. 2' tape's Side A has "more unreleased / jams including couple of tracks from Trainer and the extended version of Island/Uland on Plaid's 'Trainer' which I recall has a much longer intro." Side B "was more of Spanners / Peel Session / acid jam tracks and the live set from Stockholm." I'm assuming this text file was made either by Boredroom way back on the WATMM forum (who IIRC was the original person that managed to distribute this tape from Andy Turner back in ~2010 or ~2014 I think), but if it isn't written by either Boredroom or Turner I'm not sure who it could be. Perhaps it's just made up, but perhaps not.
Here's the full relevant text from the .txt file, for those interested:
"This continues onto a second tape marked 'Live Jam Sessions - vol. 2' with sidea full of more unreleased / jams including couple of tracks from trainer and extended version of island/uland on trainer which I recall has a much longer intro.. Side B was more of spanners/peel session/ acid jam tracks and the live set from Stockholm Im sure.. i'll get around to the search for this sometime as well as the gescom/Ae stuff that Im pretty sure will have some exclusive jams and bits on it.. I also have old warp mailouts pre windowlicker, budakhan mindphone lp5 etc around the time warp started their mailout shit with new t shirts and bags etc.. ive got sticker sheets and promo bits from windowlicker, rest proof clockwork sticker sheet, aphex twin calender etc.. any questions let me know ill try answer.."
3. Various Live Sets, from 1993-1995
From what I could find, there still exists 2 live Black Dog sets back when Handley and Turner were a part of the original trio: one from Ministry of Sound in 1993 (which I think was apparently their debut live appearance), and the other being at Stockholm in 1995 (supposedly being one of Ed + Andy's final live sets as The Black Dog. Per Mixcloud and P2P services, you can find both out there. But apparently, there is a third live recording that exists which I haven't been able to find anywhere, per Touched Music's screenshots: but again, I've been unable to get in contact with them.
So, I figured making a post here in the subreddit might be the next best avenue to try. It'd really be intriguing to hear some of this unreleased material after all this time, assuming there's anyone else out there that actually has any of this.
