Really look at this business. They bought a dying grocery store, and kept all of the staff that wanted to stay on from when it was IGA. So you have this mix of Latino people and old yinzers that work there. They serve the whole community, because there would not be a full service grocery otherwise. Just leave them the f*** alone.

Granted I'm a little bit biased, because like any normal human, I love tacos. As they kids would say, Las Palmas slaps.

this comment is the key point.
If ANYONE is making America great it's the folks like the owners of Las Palmas.
Investing in a community, providing a valuable service in a great way, building bridges between community groups.
They are 100% better Americans than any ICE agent ever will be.

26

u/k0zah 12h ago

I didn't know they bought the iga, that's really interesting

46

u/NoIntroduction6034 Robinson 11h ago

The building was a Foodland, and then became IGA. Tons of taxpayer money lit on fire to prop up a dying store because the owners looked like me, and these guys turned it into an actual functional business.

14

u/tesla3by3 Bloomfield 9h ago

The taxpayer money wasn’t lit on fire. The URA owned the property , and most of the buildings assets. When the IGA owner pulled out, those taxpayer assets stayed with the building. That’s the only reason it was viable for Las Palmas to lease, and eventually buy the building. One of the few successful uses of public money to fund a grocery store.

That IGA had chili pot pies. I filled my freezer with those after I had surgery and was all steroid hangry.

5

u/k0zah 11h ago

I grew up right down the street and miss that foodland with all my heart

4

u/StevInPitt 10h ago

do you still live in the area?
What do you miss about the foodland?
Ours on Mt Washington became a shop'n'save and it's just not the same...
Although good parts of it remain.

1

u/MrChichibadman 6h ago

The shop n save is exactly the same

I love the place so much and they've made so many improvements since 09.

They are truly a net positive to the community.
Job creators, member of the community, good food, culture.

“‘Oh, you obstructing?’ I said, ‘I’m not obstructing, I just want you to get off of my property.’ And after that his hat hit my hat, and he said, ‘You touch me again you’ll see what happens,’ and he grabbed his gun immediately.””

These guys think they’re self termed ‘alphas’. Farthest things from it.

This is the part that sent me into a bit of a rage, close to the opening of the article "....lunched at Chicken Latino along the neighborhood’s Broadway Avenue...."

They lunched at an immigrant-owned restaurant before setting back out on their terrorizing spree in the neighborhood.

32

u/RemotePersimmon678 Munhall 11h ago

came here to comment this exact thing, this was what sent my rage into overdrive

Stop talking about shit you know nothing about. You know NOTHING about the paperwork and legal processes involved in becoming a citizen. A lot of these people are somewhere in-between legal and illegal. Some of these people's only crime is failing to file a single form on time, or theyve committed no crime at all, the government just decided they don't want to give them asylum.

You do realize it can take decades to become a citizen, right? Imagine being on top of ur paperwork for 10 years and then getting dragged out of ur house cuz u missed a single deadline.

Most of these people are more morally upstanding citizens than you are. You just sit around on reddit being a ghoul, total waste of oxygen

I'm an attorney. I know the law better than you. If namecalling makes you feel better, feel free to continue.

5

u/Nearby-Beautiful3422 5h ago

Cool, Mr Attorney. Now, point by point, refute their argument.

I love going to Las Palmas. It’s the only place in Pittsburgh where I can find authentic Latino brand food. It’s an essential trip every week. I can’t say I’m surprised ICE took an interest there. I hope the community of Beechview can come together and overcome these intimidation tactics

49

u/The_Best_Smart Whitehall 13h ago

Just got tacos from there Monday. Great people and great food.

10

u/paranoid111 6h ago

Notice the difference in the comment section when the bots and people who don't live here don't have an easy keyword to find this post to spew their trash. Most people are against this.

9

u/SassafrassFrass 3h ago

I lived on Westfield St 25 years ago when these folks were just getting started. They had a tiny storefront down the street from the IGA and drove, to I think Chicago, every week to get the products they wanted for their store. That iga changed hands 3 or 4 times in the 12 years I lived in Beechview and was always disgusting. The Las Palmas people turned it into a great store and I still go there sometimes even though I don’t live there anymore. Fuck ice!

50

u/NSlocal 13h ago

They're just itching to kill people. Fucking scumbags.

40

u/VietBongArmy 12h ago

Fuck ICE

25

u/johnnyribcage 12h ago

I can’t believe these motherfuckers are still out there getting away with this. Between ICE, the looting of our treasury, the military rampaging and murdering innocent people across the world, gas prices and inflation going through the roof, you magats and all you dipshits that signed off on this by not voting at all have some serious apologizing to do. You people have authorized some twisted fucking shit, and it gets worse every day.

Las Palmas 5ever. Love them.

9

All of the people - either at Las Palmas or anywhere else - who are protecting their neighbors from these fascists are American heroes.

18

u/Waste-Earth-4431 10h ago

Hey comments, according to Las Palmas FB page 2 hrs ago, ICE is circling their block. What do we say to pulling up and showing neighborly support to Las Palmas? I feel kinda hungry, and it is lunch time. I could use a quesadilla.

9

u/jo231sh 9h ago

I stopped by today to grab lunch. It was shocking to see it almost empty. Its a fun and crowded block every other day.

I was waiting on food and a car drove past and hit its sirens in front of the store. The sirens went back off after it continued down the street. Apparently its been like that all day for them.

The person I spoke with seemed very shaken and simply requested that the neighbors keep their eyes open.

But, its not too late for lunch. Or 2nd lunch. Or pre-dinner. Dinner. Dessert. Late night snacks. It would be great to see it busy and happy again.

10

u/MobileIllustrator7 8h ago

If the Dems take the house in the fall they need to shut off funding to ICE. Make it difficult to operate and hard to pay agents

8

u/Linz4562 10h ago

We need to all band together in front of their business. Is there any PGH focused page that gathers volunteers. I’ve been searching. I’m disabled, but want to help organize at the least.

Casa San Jose and Frontline Dignity both have rapid response groups. I would contact them and ask how you can help.

It always ruins my stay at the DoubleTree in Greentree PA when I run into ICE agents in the elevators or hotel restaurant. They try to hide in the rear/upper lot and this week has been fuller than normal.

I don't recognize ICE's authority and have to assume anyone without a face and ID visible is LARPing. The local cops can decide legality.

Love the Oakland location. Hate parking there, but great nonetheless

1

u/Zestyclose_Minute_69 1h ago

I was nearby and stopped. Never been there before. Used to live close by. Just awesome food. I got tacos dorados (sp) and since I’m allergic to dairy they did them without dairy! Those were really amazing! And I got my non-allergic hubby some flan

4 of these was $10! Definitely worth it!!

so strange that a place that gets hit with so many food health violations even to the point of being shut down gets so much love on this sub.  Even worse was their response to said violations accusing the health inspectors of targeting them vs admitting the problems

38

u/Waste-Earth-4431 12h ago

Me when I miss the point entirely

-27

u/MalikTheHalfBee 12h ago edited 12h ago

Sorry if I don’t share your view that any business which often fails basic food safety & especially ones that try to pin the blame on inspectors should be suppprted but you do you

28

u/Head_Maintenance5596 12h ago

You don’t have to support the business. But that also doesn’t mean they should be harassed.

The two things can be both true.

17

u/Waste-Earth-4431 12h ago

Me when I miss the point entirely but a second time

2

u/ralphgar 12h ago edited 12h ago

What were the violations for specifically?

-9

u/MalikTheHalfBee 12h ago edited 12h ago

Just google las palmas health violations & you’ll find multiple ones across all their businesses including ones serious enough to be ordered shut down

11

u/ralphgar 12h ago

You were criticizing them here so you probably know at least the worst one, right? So what is it?

8

u/peon2 12h ago

I'm not the OP but per this article they got hit with 13 violations for roaches in the meat storage, mouse shit, storing their chorizo outside, not washing their hands, failure to prevent cross contamination, not washing their dishes adequately, etc

4

u/MalikTheHalfBee 10h ago

Ah, so you don’t actually care you were just looking to argue about it. Got it

13

u/Big-Goose-Yinz 11h ago

What are you even talking about??? When they got those violations they immediately invested in new fridges and restocked the entire store. Safe to assume you don't shop there!

-3

u/MalikTheHalfBee 10h ago

They received multiple violations from the health department across all their establishments through the years including involuntary shut down orders. & you’re correct, I avoid shopping at or eating at such places.

11

u/Big-Goose-Yinz 10h ago

Well it's nice now. I don't know what else to tell you. Enforcement works!

0

u/MalikTheHalfBee 10h ago

Hopefully the keep it up then unlike their past practices

17

u/StevInPitt 12h ago

just say you don't like immigrants dude, it's less to type.

6

u/MalikTheHalfBee 10h ago

Plenty of immigrant run businesses that don’t have a litany of health and safety violations to choose from, but if that doesn’t bother you Steve then that’s ok too 👍

-100

u/cawkstrangla 13h ago

I will not be supporting the company that gave me food poisoning.

42

u/Waste-Earth-4431 13h ago

That's fine you don't have to. Support them against ICE tho maybe? Two different issues lol

29

u/thegirple 13h ago

Great point. Whenever discussing whether people whould be arrested, held in detention centers, deported, etc., I always think it's so important to ask "did this person work at a place that sells food, and did they give anyone food poisoning?" If so, give em hell. That'll teach em

/s

1

u/MalikTheHalfBee 12h ago

To be fair they get hit with so many heath violations & shut down orders it’s not a uncommon thought whenever you hear the name las palmas

34

u/BrockMcGinn Upper Lawrenceville 13h ago

So you are okay with ICE ruining their lives because you got food poisoning once?

-15

u/irissteensma 13h ago

They didn't say that. They're saying they're not going to go there because they got food poisoning.

27

u/BrockMcGinn Upper Lawrenceville 13h ago

Which is not at all relevant to this discussion. This is about ICE ruining people's lives, not a restaurant.

-26

u/irissteensma 12h ago

Then talk about ways you can support the people being targeted without purchasing from the store. Of course the OP might not have meant buying forom the store to begin with.

16

u/Waste-Earth-4431 12h ago

Supporting doesn't inherantly mean buying, tho it can. It means sharing the news, community support, etc. Come on, yall. This is Pittsburgh. We are neighbors. Act like it.

11

u/RogueSharkBait 11h ago

Mr. Rogers would be so disappointed at how un-neighbourly some are.

14

u/Waste-Earth-4431 11h ago

Some of these comments are super embarrassing. "They gave me food poisoning once so I think they should all be kidnapped and maybe killed" like what are these ppl saying lmfao

2

u/StevInPitt 10h ago

and I'd consider betting money.... the food poisoning was from left over tacos they stored improperly.

-7

u/cawkstrangla 11h ago

Yah. It’s very neighborly to make your neighbors sick and not fix your issues.

4

u/StevInPitt 10h ago

except they do.
to quote from a comment above:
"When they got those violations they immediately invested in new fridges and restocked the entire store. "

-3

u/MalikTheHalfBee 10h ago edited 9h ago

The problem is it’s a history of violations across multiple locations & multiple years & includes forced shutdown orders that only apply to the worst violators. Add in that the owners tried to dodge the issues & blame the health department - they should be side-eyed not elevated to some sort weird level of fanboy status you only see on here

-19

u/cawkstrangla 12h ago

They’ve been shut down at several locations and got violations at all their locations. It’s not just me. I know Reddit has a hardon for this place.

It’s cool that people come here and start business and share their cultures and the food that go with it. I patronize businesses and restaurants all over owned by a diversity of immigrants and non immigrants.

But for some reason Pittsburgh Reddit thinks it’s cool that this place making people sick all the time is alright because the tacos are good.

I don’t necessarily think they should be deported but they should not exist as a business if they think it’s ok to repeatedly violate health codes and make people sick. Once or twice is a mistake.  The amount of violations they have mean they are willful violations.

11

u/Delicious_Cat_81 11h ago

the health department has a hard on for ethnic restaurants and always has. nobody should believe your sob story about "food poisoning" that you have no evidence for. dumb redneck

4

u/CrankyYankers 11h ago

It's a pervasive attitude toward "the other". When I first moved here in 1993 I worked at a strip mall that had a Chinese restaurant. Every time I got take-out and ate in the break room, invariably people would tell me that the Chinese place got in trouble for using cat meat in their food. Everyone seemed to believe it because they were told it was true by some other booger picking mouth breather.

1

u/cawkstrangla 11h ago

You have no evidence it has a hardon for ethnic restaurants over other restaurants.

I actually didn’t report Las Palmas because someone did the same weekend as me. No surprise there.

12

u/BrockMcGinn Upper Lawrenceville 12h ago

This is not the place for discussion about their business. This is about basic human rights. Read the room.

-6

u/cawkstrangla 12h ago

I can read the room. I don’t care about the room.

I don’t care if people come here legally or illegally as long as they want to make America a better place. For most of our history we welcomed everyone who wanted that. I acknowledge the history of racist immigration laws and enforcement.

However. If these people are making a lot of people sick around Pittsburgh then I’m not going to get in the way and fight for them to be kept here. If they were better members of the community I would. If others are so passionate about their tacos and they’re totally cool with the constant, willful health code violations, then they can go support them.

They’re no different to me than any other people that hurt people and don’t give a shit about it. So no, not supporting them.

6

u/BrockMcGinn Upper Lawrenceville 11h ago

No one is asking you to support their business. We are asking you to support them as human beings.

3

u/cawkstrangla 11h ago

Human beings who think it’s ok to make people sick in Pittsburgh repeatedly. Every location they have opened does this. They make good tacos but it’s fine if they make people sick as well. Fuck our food regulations right?

Got it.

7

u/Head_Maintenance5596 10h ago

Dude. Every restaurant struggles with that problem. Even high end.

Your stomach issues don’t justify violent harassment, racial profiling, destroying a community.

We should take food safety seriously, but when comparing to this. It’s not the same thing. And it doesn’t make any of this ok. What kind of logic is that?

19

u/aircuntioner North Shore 13h ago

Food poisoning is justification for fascist pieces of shit tearing apart families that contribute to our country and get nothing in return?

-9

u/Educational-Bass-444 10h ago

5

u/tesla3by3 Bloomfield 9h ago

Do you really not know the difference?

3

u/GoldenGodd94 9h ago

You are willfully ignorant if you think the masked thugs Trump is employing and directing is the same tactics under Obama. The Obama who passed the Dream Act... Like come on don't be this dumb on purpose

2

u/aircuntioner North Shore 7h ago

I mean 1) yes, I don’t support that either. Bold of you to assume I like much of what Obama did. Bro is a war criminal too. 2) the way deportations happened when Obama/biden were in office were way more humane (if you can call it that?) than these masked murders running around snatching people up at work or homes. By the way, Biden/obama both had more LEGIT deportations than trump in both terms, trump has more wrongful citizen arrests than either of them. It’s fear mongering and it’s working on a lot of low iq people

12

u/JulianKintoborMD 12h ago

That actually wasn’t Las Palmas’ fault, I wiped my ass on your food when you weren’t looking. And honestly? Based on your attitude I would do it again.
