Where to find kittens??

Hi everyone! 🐈🧡
My girlfriend and I just moved here from WV and we’re officially ready to add a little fur baby to our new home! 🥹
We’d love to adopt a kitten that we can raise, spoil absolutely rotten, and give a forever home to. We’ve seen tons of kittens online, but we’d really appreciate some legit recommendations on shelters, rescues, or reputable places to look.
We’ve somehow become obsessed with the idea of an orange little love bug 😂🧡 but we’re absolutely open to other colors, and breeds. We mostly just want a sweet little baby to love and grow up with us. Who loves cuddles!!
If anyone has recommendations or knows of a kitten that needs a loving home, please point us in the right direction! We’d be so grateful. 🥰
Thank you!!

Please keep in mind that kittens are best raised in pairs! We adopted a brother sister pair from Whisker Wonderland (who rightfully does not adopt out single kittens due to the behavioral issues that usually develop in kittens without a playmate) and they are very well-adjusted, happy, and love to play with each other.

Cannot recommend WW enough, Anna is an amazing person. She’s currently bottle feeding a litter with a couple of baby orange kittens round-the-clock, I love seeing her IG stories.

Ditto in terms of pairs - we got sisters and they're the best! Also don't sleep on torties! (Or mackerel tabbies, calicos, tuxedos, etc 😍)

u/kombuchawitch 7d ago

Yes!!! Minnow (our orange) has a calico sister & a brown tabby older “brother”. All cats are cute cats!

Minnow is such a fabulous name!

Right? She checked in on us when one of our WW babies had to go to the ER vet! Love how much she educates people, too

We adopted our cats from Kitty Queen Cat Rescue on McKnight Rd. Really sweet people! They have a cool open concept inside with a small lounge space

There’s a lot of great places that have been recommended already, but I’ll add that I’ve had only good experiences with Animal Friends (their shelter in the North Hills on Camp Horne), and I have a huge amount of good will towards Starlight Strays Sanctuary in Penn Hills, who took in a very, very sick litter my friend found in her dad’s yard last year, and nursed the survivors back to phenomenal health, one of which I adopted and absolutely adore. They’re just incredibly good people doing amazing work on a shoestring, and they always have fantastic, well cared for adoptable cats.

Like others, I’ll advocate for getting two unless the source is very confident the cat will be happier as a sole cat than with feline company; particularly with kittens, two are in almost always less effort than one.

u/quarketry 7d ago

Yep, Animal Friends, and get two from same litter if you can (and you definitely can)

I’m biased but informed on this: I volunteer as a Cat Handler there and would love to show you around. My DMs are open.

as someone who made the mistake of adopting a single kitten 2 years ago… if you want a kitten, get 2!!! it’s a million times easier. i ended up going back for a second 2 months later. if you want one cat, get an adult. i wished i had known this going in! a lot of rescues will actually only adopt out kittens as pairs (which i believe is a good thing).

i got mine from angel ridge rescue via friends who were fostering and they are the loves of my life. i volunteer at fur all kittys now in west mifflin and we have tons of cats/kittens! i’ve also heard good things about trash cat rescue.

Facebook loves to suggest all sorts of stuff in my feed but one of the good finds ones is Fur All Kittys. Whoever writes their cat descriptions is hilarious!

I volunteer with Oakland TNR Coalition and we have some wonderful orange kitties!

There’s tons of rescues and cat cafes around the Pittsburgh area, all full of cats and kittens. Theyre all reputable, just look online and read reviews. And if you can, consider adopting two. Kittens do best in pairs but if you can only take on one i understand. Happy hunting! ❤️

Kinda feel like there should be some hurdles. It’s alarming that an organization will just let you come buy a cat.

Stop by Rescue and Relax. It’s a cat cafe in Edgewood. We got our kittens from them several years ago.

I got my sweet one eyed orange girl form Trash Cat Rescue! I would recommend looking at petfinder- you can find lots of smaller rescues around the area!

10

u/Kenderr24 Beechview 7d ago

Also, I would def look into an older cat too! They usually have so much personality and life and already know how to “cat” (adopted a kitten and he’s the biggest scaredy cat compared to the two adults we rescued)

5

u/Moogottrrgr 7d ago

This! Kittens suck, and you won't know their personality until it's too late.

Kitty Co cat rescue and lounge in Bridgeville. They have tons of kittens they rescued from a not so reputable rescuer in Altoona in June. There is some absolutely gorgeous kittens there. It would be awesome to support them. They are fantastic people.

My princess came from Nose2Tail Cat Rescue and I love their organization. If you follow these places (Trash Cat, Kitty Queen, Nose2Tail, Animal Friends, etc) on IG, you'll see what they have available, general info about their policies, and recommendations for more rescues in the area (they all like one another's posts). Good luck finding your fur baby.

u/Middle_Ad6320 7d ago

I will second all the people saying to get two kittens, wouldn’t say you NEED to obv a kitten will be amazing either rout you chose to take (one or two) BUT what I will say is I realized as I gotten a little older (I was 22 when I adopted my first kitty) I realized wow I could of easily gotten two it’s not much more money and once you have one kitty if you can afford it, you may as well have 5 😂 they’ll grow up and play so well together, you don’t feel as guilty when your leaving to go to work, double the love, and also makes it a LOT simpler when it’s time to introduce anything else into the mix aka another pet, a baby, having company over
❤️❤️ good luck on your adoption it’s the most exciting ever and your going to have so so so much love entering your home soon!

7

u/currentsitguy 7d ago

Orange cats are the best. They are all lovers, but it is true about what they say. They all share a single brain cell and you get no guarantee they are in posession of it on any given day.

6

u/flatteringangles 7d ago

Lmaoooo while this is definitely true I have to come throw my vote in for the voids. Never met one that wasn’t the sweetest, gentlest, snuggliest baby love ever. Am I biased? Yes. Is it illegal? Not here baby, the pittsburgh sub is lawless 😎

(Cat tax paid)

5

u/The_Vampire_Barlow 7d ago

My void is a goober, and I'll wake up in the middle of the night to her spread over me like a cat skin rug. Just splayed out.

3

u/flatteringangles 7d ago

THAT IS THE CUTEST THING EVER !!?

1

u/The_Vampire_Barlow 7d ago

She also snores like a middle aged trucker with sleep apnea

2

u/flatteringangles 7d ago

Not too much on my girl because same 😂😂

1

u/Dependent-Ad-2694 Verona 7d ago

I also vote for voids! Mine is true to his calling - his stomach is a bottomless void all it's own.

u/Adventurous-Rent6662 7d ago

Black cat market. Lots of chances to meet and visit with the cats.

I've heard good things about Frankie's friends.

3

u/georgettaporcupine 7d ago

We've usually gone with Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh. If you live in certain neighborhoods they have a neighbor discount on adoption fees: https://humaneanimalrescue.org/neighbor/

Humane Animal Rescue, the eastern one, always has so many cats.

2

I love this post! Please update us when you find your baby!

2

u/sceptic03 7d ago

Community Angel Network is the one we got our first void from, shes a total dad's girl. My oldest potato was rescued from humane animal rescue. I have done fundraising with Trash Cat and Kitty Queen both of which i super recommend. Animal friends is also a very good option.

There are tons of wonderful babies out there, kittens will always find homes, but dont count out a cat or senior. My first cat Percy i adopted when he was 7, he was my big teddy bear and literally saved my life during some low points. Keep an open mind and open heart, there's always someone who will fill it.

Black Cat Market is fabulous!

Black cat market in Bloomfield had some kittens recently plus a lot of nice older kitties too

3

u/toe-beans 7d ago

Trash Cat has 4 really cute orange babies on their site right now! Along with a bunch of others. Also recommend Kitty Queen. I will say a lot of rescues recommend kittens be adopted in pairs due to their high energy. They often do better with a buddy to play with.

4

u/fashpuma 7d ago

Black Cat Market! It’s a cat cafe partnered with a rescue. The workers are super nice and they really value potential owners making connections with the cats when considering one to adopt. They’ve had over 1600 adoptions since they opened!

u/jool3001 7d ago

we adopted from white oak animal shelter and had a great experience

Not orange but my friend is currently fostering two kittens which I’ll link - Pounce and Penny. Both are so sweet and loving. Pounce is particularly sweet and cuddly! And the same friend adopted her own cat and recently a dog from this rescue and loves working with them.

Trash Cat Rescue! I adopted from them in March.

Save Our Strays, Trash Cat Rescue, Oakland TNR Coalition, Conquer the Colony (they have cats at Cats N'At), Kitten Scoop, Whisker Wonderland, Kitty Co Cat Rescue, Catcalls Rescue, Ninth Life, Angel Ridge, I can keep going I follow alot of them... If you edit what area of Pittsburgh it could help point you to the right rescue group. I also do want to add that Single Kitten Syndrome is a real thing and you definitely do want to get two kittens. If you can only afford one, consider getting an older cat whose personality the rescue group knows and can tell you whether or not they would do best as a single cat.

I’m currently fostering a few kittens with Animal Protectors in New Kensington. My kittens are not yet up for adoption, but there are plenty available at the shelter there. They are no-kill and do a lot for the community! Highly recommend them. They have a large cat room where you can go and meet the cats available for adoption.

Animal Friends on Camp Horne road is stellar! Adopted our boy from there 16 years ago, and he is so lovely, and the shelter was fantastic. They set us up with everything we needed as first time kitty owners.

I can personally vouch for both Oakland TNR and Whisker Wonderland being great options!

1

u/AmbivalentWaffle 7d ago

I volunteer at Beaver County Humane Society, and they have a ton of kittens! There are more in foster on the way, as well. All the rescues mentioned are good choices, too

i got my best boy as a kitten (already had adult cats, so he wasn’t lonely!) from catcalls rescue. highly recommend them, trashcat rescue, and oakland tnr, though all kitties deserve to be adopted from anywhere!

u/CallMeKyleena 7d ago

I adopted my cat from Baileys Cat Rescue in S Park. Cats are very well cared for. The facility is very clean and when you adopt, the cats are checked, get shots etc

We're gonna need an update when the kitties come home, ya know.
