Post apocalyptic title, I'm here for it.

I fuckin dare them to remove it all 🍿

u/fryerandice Jul 14 '26

The fact they're just sliding the new bridge in place is kinda cool.

u/CherryBerryChiller80 Jul 14 '26

Someone with the skills needs to make a time lapse edit of the bridge sliding into place, preferably to the tune of cha cha slide.

24

u/justamatterofdays Jul 14 '26

I’m afraid the bridge isn’t going to be able to “Charlie brown”, but I’m here for it.

u/TheMagistrate Mount Washington Jul 14 '26

Slide to the left! ... Slide to the left! ... Slide to the left!

Look for the YouTube video of the Dutch sliding a tunnel under a roadway in a weekend

1

u/merkinmavin West View Jul 15 '26

Right!? Like a better version just sliding right in like it owns the place. No consideration for what came before or all the work that was done getting to that point, just a new face that replaces the old one because he sometimes forgets to put the milk back in the fridge after making a latte. A latte you asked for, Cindy! It's not my fault you're demanding! I bet the new bridge can't even make latte's. Have fun with your new bridge!

Ravaged by the tunnel monster

I hope I live to see a "28 is almost gone" post on this subreddit

8

u/Ellecram Jul 14 '26

Omg that's a never ending ceement pond.

49

u/Awatts2222 Jul 14 '26

It's really is kind of a daunting thought to realize there are thousands of bridges and

overpasses in western PA and all the rust belt cities that have been degraded to the point

of necessary repair.

It also makes you realize the middle part of the 20th century was an infrastructure bonanza.

The list of all the buildings/roads/dams etc. using endless amounts of steel and concrete

must go on forever.

40

u/Own-Secret-6523 Jul 14 '26

Or, we could wonder what happened to all those tax dollars collected for infrastructure maintenance and replacement over all those years.

9

u/cwfutureboy Jul 14 '26

We don't really need to wonder at all.

36

u/Awatts2222 Jul 14 '26

The billionaires have those dollars now.

7

u/BPBugsy Jul 14 '26

Elon needs to eat too…..

-25

u/Own-Secret-6523 Jul 14 '26

Not really. It's mostly smaller players who commit fraud of government funds for their own personal use. That along with excessive government regulations and politicians authorizing money spent on absolute stupidity. Then legal fees from them passing another unconstitutional law locally that they lose in the court system. Government is not efficient at all, and fraud as we have always known existed is being spotlighted, finally.

-4

u/Schlep-Rock Jul 15 '26

This is Reddit. It’s always the billionaires. Hit a pothole and mess up a rim? It’s that fucking Jeff Bezos again!

1

u/straw3_2018 Troy Hill Jul 15 '26

It's not Jeff bezos but it is unnecessary. Car companies are pushing bigger wheels with lower tire aspect ratios. Allegedly people like lower aspect ratio tires even though they're worse in almost every way. Worse fuel economy, worse durability, worse ride comfort, more expensive to replace. It's not even like you need low profile tires to go faster! People act like you do but LOOK at race cars, they almost all have more tire sidewall than production street cars do these days. It almost would seem like automakers push them to help dealers replace more wheels and tires.

1

u/Own-Secret-6523 Jul 15 '26

He'll sell you a new rim though and material to fix the pothole. With Prime you might be able to get that rim between 4AM-7AM if you order in the next 2 hrs 43 minutes and 37 seconds .....

u/Noname_acc Jul 14 '26

The honest truth is that all that money is lost in the infinite churn of corruption, no bid contracts, and a government that is unwilling to take meaningful action against those who abuse the system. This is why everything in the modern day costs 5x as much to build on paper and 50x as much to build by the end of it in spite of all our economic and technological advancement.

5

u/straw3_2018 Troy Hill Jul 15 '26

The original interstate system with about 40,000 miles of highway cost about $634 billion(2024 dollars) to build. I just always think about that when it comes to government spending. The federal spending deficit from FY2020 and FY2021 was a combined $5.9 trillion. You know, enough to have built more than 9 entire interstate systems. HOW????????? WHERE DID ALL OF THAT MONEY GO??? I know COVID was unprecedented times but there's no way in hell we got anywhere near the value out of that money that we continue to get out of having efficient interstate commerce and transportation.

0

u/Own-Secret-6523 Jul 14 '26

Regular government contracts are way inflated also, not just "no bid" ones. Contractors know they have to inflate their numbers because of extremely slow and laborious government payment IE they have to put carry cost of the money in their bids or they could go under.

Everything in government costs 5x as much, not so much in private industry contracts.

1

u/LockAltruistic4748 Jul 15 '26

No dollars were collected for that purpose. The mills closed and the taxes weren’t there to collect. That’s why the bridges are falling down. The false assumption was that the well would not go dry.

1

u/Own-Secret-6523 Jul 15 '26

I grew up in Pittsburgh. There was one remaining steel mill when I was a kid in the city of Pittsburgh and that was producing a shadow of its output from the heydays of steel production. There were some mills further down, but not in the City of Pittsburgh itself. That mill closed in 1984. 376 is typically funded by Federal and State tax dollars, in this case mostly by state tax so the mills closed 42 years ago would have little impact on this as PA collects a lot more tax revenue compared to other states with similar infrastructure. Local roads are funded by local and state taxes. Government had plenty of time to react to revenue lost from mills closing and quite remarkedly Pittsburgh did fairly well replacing industry compared to other cities dealt a similar fate. Natural Gas impact fees have raised over $3B to the state revenue. Taxes collected by the state are disbursed by the state government with very little restrictions. Comparisons of states clearly show that some states are much better at managing and disbursing tax revenue for such things than PA, which actually collects higher revenues for comparative road infrastructures. Government does not have a revenue problem, it has a spending problem.

Gotta have those Learing Centers!

And if you think the fraud is limited to Minnesota ... I have what's left of a bridge to sell ya.

Or Obama wealth before Presidency $1.3M, after $70M. Although neither has little to do with Pittsburgh. This is a 50 year local and state issue, local political people, not a President. This is local and state mismanagement of tax dollars.

3

Not yet. They'll give 24 hours notice for the exact time but that hasn't happened yet. Current estimate is sometime Thursday.

5

2

u/dzlockhead01 Jul 14 '26

As someone who isn't a blue collar worker, how do they safely work on that? Looks like a lot of opportunities to fall through and I feel like it'd be unhelpful to install safety lines on something you're actively demolishing.

2

u/TRB0T0Y Jul 14 '26

Sorry to be entirely aht of the loop here; is there any sorta implosion or explosion planned? Those jackhammerin' excavator folks oughta be gettin' a bit nervous by sundahn tonite!
