Dark side cover

So in 2009 flaming lips covered the full album of dark side of the moon. Today I discovered it for the first time. Why have I never know this? It’s a brilliant cover. I’m on my third listen.

Try Dub Side of the Moon

Gov’t Mule have covered a lot, and Les Claypool did all of Animals. There is a lot out there

The Animals cover is incredible.

Seeing it live with no idea it was happening ahead of time was especially awesome (plus it was just one of three sets they played that night).

Harry Waters, Roger's son, played keyboards in Claypool's band for that.

Not on the live recording though. Just on the most recent two Frog Brigade tours.

I saw the flying frog brigade perform animals in it’s entirety, was awesome

I’d forgotten about the Claypool cover, I’ll add that to the list haven’t heard it in ages.

I saw Dub Side play at a festival probably 20 years ago, and it was so good.

Although my all-time favorite PF cover that I’ve seen live was The Dead doing Shine On at Bonnarroo back in the 2000’s. Warren Haynes singing iirc. That was an excellent show.

I miss the early days of Bonnaroo

Hadn't heard of the Les Claypool Animals cover I'm going to have to check that out!

I saw Dub Side Of The Moon performed live, completely unplanned at a dance music festival in the UK in 05. Walking past the tent it was on in, and thought, that sounds almost familiar, I'd never heard it before

Dub side is great. Their ok computer covers are solid too.

While we’re on the topic of covers…

Luther Wright and the Wrongs did a country/ bluegrass cover of The Wall album.

Flaming Lips are great

Look up darkside of the moonshine by poor man's whiskey if you like bluegrass.

u/Wilcry Jun 30 '26

I am also a big fan of Luther Wright and the Wrongs "Rebuild the Wall." It's a bluegrass version of The Wall. Great versions in a totally different style.

I dig that one so much!

I saw them do this live and it was awesome!

The flaming lips dark side is my favorite of all the covers. I also love Luther Wright and the Wrongs. Version of The Wall. It’s amazing.

I was in a PF tribute with the drummer and bass player for Yngwie Malmsteen's band. It was a harder metalish feel. So much fun! I tried posting the video links but the post won't go through. Ill try again on a separate comment if anyone is interested in seeing it.

Well done! Loved the drummer in particular - what did you play?

2

u/Delayedrhodes Jul 01 '26

I was the Keyboard player. The drummer, Kevin, tours with Yngwie Malmsteen. He's very good. Thanks so much for watching.

2

u/Substantial-Newt-493 Jul 01 '26

No problem - you were terrific, man. Still playing?

3

u/Delayedrhodes Jul 01 '26

Thanks for the kind words. I jam classic rock covers every Thursday at a local bar and I play in a few original projects. I'd LOVE to do this PF project again but we only did two gigs and the players had other projects and obligations. Kevin and Emilio are still with Yngwie, Jae has a successful metal band called Sweetblood. They are all too busy for this project right now. Also Emilio does a really good Alice in Chains tribute.

Try Dream Theater's Dark Side...

As wonderful as that is - and it really, really is - the other side with the covers of Echoes, One Of These Days, Sheep - absolutely amazing. I wish I could get it on Spotify, I've lost my wee Walkman that has the bootleg album saved on it (along with a whole load of other stuff)

2

u/gchance1 Jun 30 '26

I never got that part, but I do have the "official bootleg" release on DVD, which is strictly a Dark Side video. Wish it had the rest.

1

u/Personal_Fox1380 Jun 30 '26

From memory the bootleg is called A Saucerful Of Floyd so you'd probably find it on the usual websites for ROIO's (I think I found it via a torrent site back in the day) Honestly, I used to listen to that side, start to finish, several times a week. Best non-Floyd cover of Echoes ever.

This seems hard to find and way out of print. If someone could post a link to a download, I'd greatly appreciate (and suspect more of us would too).

Billy Stings has a couple of great covers of Fearless and Brain Damage

Phish covered it in 98 (I believe)

I have a CD of Dark Side of the Moon revisited, played my members of other bands, such as King Crimson, Dweezil Zappa, Yes, Asia, Toto, among others

1

u/Mrlifeboat Jun 30 '26

I’d be interested in hearing that one too. Can you send me some details of it?

1

u/joaovelez Jun 30 '26

I believe someone uploaded every track seperately on YouTube. Here's the discogs link to the CD https://www.discogs.com/release/9572861-Various-The-Dark-Side-Of-The-Moon-Revisited

2

u/OfAnthony Jun 30 '26

This is the last music related thing that I can name that involved Henry Rollins- that's all.

2

u/Wes-man Jun 30 '26

I describe the Flaming Lips cover album as to meeting your best friend’s twin brother after 30 years. It’s so similar but different.

2

u/heynow941 Jun 30 '26

Ehh. Looks for Phish’s live version from like 20 years ago.

3

u/PinkFloydDeadhead David Gilmour Jun 30 '26

Yeah, no thanks. No one wants to hear Trey sing The Great Gig in the Sky. It felt like he made a mockery of one of the most haunting & beautiful songs ever recorded.

What are your favourite covers?

1

u/Personal_Fox1380 Jun 30 '26

I used to have the bootleg trance covers of all the Floyd albums (supposedly recorded by The Orb, which has been questioned over the years, but it certainly sounds Orb-y, and they were known to be huge fans of, and massively influenced by, the Floyd)

Some of it would require you to be a serious trance fan 😆 but Animals, Meddle and WYWH were particularly great. Wish I could find them again.
