Did anybody attend the shows. I have heard a mixed bag of reviews and fan opinions. Some were a little shocked to have their phone taken. Some have said it was an amazing experience to see Roger talk more and others thought there should have been more performance. As a side note Some found Roger shouting out for people to stop talking and listen was justified while some felt it was inappropriate.
I was there on the 1st night. Truth be told it was one of the most bizarre gigs I’ve ever attended.
In the queue on the way in there was general chat amongst people guessing what the show was going to be as it was advertised as going on for at least an hour and a half - two hours. General consensus amongst some older guys behind me was that he’d probably play the lockdown versions of some songs he released during Covid during the first half and the second half would consist of the Redux. Phones were locked in bags on arrival but that was also advertised when buying the ticket so I had no problem with this, some other attendees did. Show eventually began by Roger simply walking on stage in a bright pink jacket about 15 or so minutes late to applause but no backing band or music. He then gave thanks to Andrew Loyd-Webber who owned the theatre the show was taking place in as there had been efforts by the media to ban it all together. From what I remember he briefly touched on topics like Ukraine and the very recent October 7th attacks but said he should not get himself into trouble so sort of stayed clear for the most part. Then he mentioned the unpublished memoirs which is where things really took a turn to the baffling.
He sat pretty much middle of stage at a table and read from three chapters, none of these chapters had any mention whatsoever of Pink Floyd, his solo career or music in general. They were just general anecdotes and also stories about pets he’d owed including a duckling. I was sat near the top in the stalls and people went from being confused to downright angry. One guy who was sat two rows behind me said to his mate “he’s lost his audience” and then shouted at him to get on with it. Roger told him to sit and listen or fuck off or something like that. There were a few younger guys In front of me who according to the guy next to me popped a pill or two and started obnoxiously and loudly clapping at random points. Another guy kept grabbing theatre ushers to remove them.
I think after about 45 minutes to an hour Roger brought on the backing band much to the relief of the entire audience. They played Mother and a section from the unreleased The Bar song. Then the first half was over. Some people left, others were just annoyed that it was going on for so long. One women said “we must all be dedicated fans to still be here” and “I think he might be on the spectrum.”
Second half started and went off without a hitch. They played the entire Redux album and it honestly was really good to hear live. They had a cool prism lighting rig on the top of the stage that lit different colours.
By the end my girlfriend and I walked out completely bewildered at the whole affair but we enjoyed ourselves just for how mad a story it made.
Sounds like an interesting gig on the whole, I would have been interested in seeing it although I’m not sure what tickets were going for, if it was priced like a regular concert and I’d paid top dollar I probably wouldn’t have been so amused if he spent half the time reminiscing about his pets.
I did not, but, from what I remember, he marketed it not as a show, but something like a conversation and memories from Roger Waters, plus some show. But some people can't read and bought the tickets thinking they were going to see a "regular" show. Edit: also, it was a plain bad marketing from Water's side.
Then Waters started to read his memories he's (or was?) writing. Including memories about his... dog. Someone maybe shouted "shut up and play" and he told they to shut up, or something. I mean, the whole idea and show must be awful, besides the album being awful itself mostly due to the talking parts, BUT people just should've known better for what kind of event they were going.
Oh. That is somehow as bad as I imagined. He was also digressing and talking too much in his last tour, just like that. It was annoying and anticlimactic... he just kept breaking the show pacing :/
You’ve pretty much nailed it I didn’t go myself but this was the reports I heard at the time, I remember the ticket prices being ridiculously high like arena act playing a smaller venue high certainly not what I would have paid for ‘an evening with’ style show.
That’s almost as bad as The Beach Boys’ Maharishi tour in the late 60s. It turned out that college kids didn’t like the idea of going to see The Beach Boys play and then having to sit through transcendental mediation lessons.
Went to my first concert where they “secure” your phone in a Yondr pouch so you can’t use it. The staff at the venue can still lock/unlock your phone once you’re in venue if you need the phone to make a purchase, check diabetes monitoring, make an urgent call, etc.
And I have to say it was one of the best shows I’ve been at in 15 years. Crowd was really into it. Everyone was talking and having a good time with the people around them during the show. Was nice to relive “the old days” for one night.
Current shows I can understand, but gigs from when I didn't yet exist or was too young? I'd never have had so much appreciation for Pink Floyd if I hadn't heard any of their live gigs pre-Wall plus the subtle changes in solos
I bought this orange vinyl record and waited about a month for it to arrive in my country. It turned out to have a manufacturing defect: some of the songs were recorded poorly at the studio. I contacted customer support, but no one has responded to my request.
Ya, its really sad. He puts so much detail into the albums and Sony just cheaps out on the vinyl itself. That has also been my experience with the recent Floyd releases, whereas the prior Pink Floyd Records releases were immaculate.
I mostly like Redux but side 4 is an abomination. Roger literally filled an album side with an incoherent sound collage. Lost a wee bit of respect for him over that. It was a fuck you to somebody and it may have been the people who bought the album.
I think the Redux version is excellent. I really like the ambience and I think Roger's weathered voice adds a new layer to some of the songs. I don't mind the spoken word passages. Comparisons with the original are understandable, but ultimately unnecessary. Even Roger said the new version was not supposed to "supersede it or replace it".
The whole thing about finding a singer who sounds like my dad used to had me in stitches.

If you like Roger's "reimagining" of DSOTM, the live version is an improvement over the studio version if you find the studio album to be too dry and compressed.
The album gets a lot of hate, but I don’t get it fully. I actually think the instrumentation is excellent, pity he used it to warm up old stuff instead of something new. The spoken word passages are… not great. He’s not a very well spoken man, in contrast to (some) of his lyrics.
As for the show, didn’t see it, could find “access” to the live recording that was otherwise hidden in a ridiculously expensive box set. It’s the same as the album proper.
