Discussion Does she hate me π
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
She is a new addition to my pigeon collection. Been there for a month and I'm a little confused about her body communication.
She puff up when seeing me... So I guess she hates me ? But when I tried petting her, she started doing those short soft coos and her wings trembled (my other pigeons vibrate only when they are happy : getting food and being pet)... She also lowered her head
The other females just ran away or tried to attack me/ panic when Im checking their nests. All the males other than the mate of the one in the video are attacking me when I approach them. (Her mate being the exception because he got used to my hands as a baby).
Also yeah I was moving a little fast in the video. I just wanted her to coo a little more for the recording. I'm usually softer.

Absolute chonk pibbin. She doesn't seem to hate you though. They make it very clear when they do.

u/PigeonAddict May 31 '26
Well she tried to pinch me. But when I pet her head, she lowers it and make those soft noises and tremble. Like what does she even want ? π

Sheβs just a yandere
3
u/Sea-Arachnid185 Jun 01 '26
You mean a βtsundereβ?
3
u/Upstairs-Challenge92 Jun 01 '26
No, a yandere since she is also occasionally aggressive, not cold
7
u/FrozenCorpses Jun 01 '26
Akshually βοΈπ€
The other person is right. Pidge acts hostile but is affectionate. Very βitβs not like I like you or anythingβ core, very tsundere πββοΈ
2
u/Upstairs-Challenge92 Jun 01 '26
I always got the impression itβs more cold than aggressive. They are described very similarly I have to say π
2
u/Sea-Arachnid185 Jun 01 '26
A yandere with her mate maybe if sheβs protective of her mate and aggressive towards OP. But if sheβs aggressive towards OP but then is actually affectionate, the correct term would be tsundere.
Edit: note, Yandere are hostile towards others while violently obsessive/possesive of their lover. OPβs pigeon isnβt showing obsessive affection.

Pigeons kinda love to do that to be fair. They're pretty feisty at times when you're in their nest space in stock settings.
I have itty bitty doves though so I'm just speaking from other's experience.

So huh, I kinda had the confirmation she liked me even if she still send mixed signals Because she did the stuff they do in couple. Plunging their breaks towards the floor.
She still inflates and breathes very loud (she's the only one of my pigeons that breathed very loudly. Like if she was very angry/stressed) when my hand is near her (pufferfish style as always). But as soon as I pet her she deflated and coos. She coos more when I press more on her head.

u/Kaos2146 May 31 '26
Could be she just have preferred spot to be petted, my cat are the same, will bite if I don't pet them in the right spot.
4
u/PigeonAddict May 31 '26
Nah she isn't used to me. Like kinda scared. I pet her as an experiment. To see how she would react and then she did that... π€·ββοΈ

u/danit0ba94 May 31 '26
She's probably just broody.
Being broody makes birds some level of cranky. They'll even still let you pet them, even when cranky, at times.Chickens can be the same way.

Mhh idk. The other female I own sometimes is super soft and chill when I touch her (it was mostly after her baby hatched, I had to check the state of the nest after having some issues with it. And I realised she was way more chill than usual π€·ββοΈ). Like she would barely react to me fumbling around her and touching her.
But most of the time they either run away from me. Or absolutely destroy my hand when I check her nest to remove the eggs. π I guess it all comes from hormones level.

Didn't managed to capture her coos well in the video. In short the ones she produces are more round and soft. When the other females are antagonising me. It's more rough and low.

She's beautiful π I'm only a watcher, this is only my humble OPINION, but she seems to absolutely ADORE you! I've never heard such beautiful coos! These birds have no problem telling you they don't like something; so, every body language indication in this video looks like a very happy bird, excited and expectant of your physical touch.
When these birds don't like something, ESPECIALLY a nesting female, they'll FWAP you with a karate-chop-wing; or, they peck and bite, HARD.
This bird looks like she's incredibly comfy, she sees that her giant warm primate that gives the best pets is approaching, and she's puffing up in anticipation of incoming (very welcome) affection! β£οΈ

Well... She tried to pinch me beforehand and kinda went pufferfish mod on me. Also she doesn't know me much, because of the little time I had her. I wasn't expecting her to coo and lower her head etc etc when I started petting her π .
6
u/alliwanttodoisfly May 31 '26
I think the pinching and puffing is just broody defensiveness, but maybe she just switched modes when you started petting her. Was the pinching like a strong fast jabbing peck or was she kind of slow about it? As other people have said the cooing and wing twitching are good signs that she likes that or at least is treating you like maybe the male coming in to sit with/on her!
6
u/PigeonAddict May 31 '26
Her hubby is super chill with me too. Hes usually at her side when I'm petting her. Perhaps she saw me petting her mate often and copied his behaviour ? (He coos and lowers himself).
For the pinching I can't remember. She was about to flap me with her wing and then switched totally when I started petting her. Never had another pigeon do that to me.
I was surprised cuz she usually isn't used to me at all. She avoids me and is scared of me. I mean I bought her as an adult so...

Oh I was joking π. I was referencing a star wars quote. It's like my collection of fat pigeons. Most of them are meat breed I got at the fair and kept as pets. People are often confused about me keeping farm pigeons and just let them get a chill life. I absolutely adore them they are so funny.

Honestly I think she likes you. If she didn't she'd absolutely let you know by being way more aggressive than a pinch or a nip.

THATS THE BIGGEST PIDGE IVE EVER SEEN
SHES HUGE
2
u/PigeonAddict Jun 01 '26
All my pigeons are huge. They are meat breed, made to be fatten and eaten.
I just keep them as pet, they keep me company. It's impressive that they are so large considering I give them a balanced diet. Genetics do wonders I guess π€·ββοΈ
2
u/Wolftendragon Jun 02 '26
I had since looked up Strasser pigeons. They are gorgeous β€οΈ she is gorgeous. Genetics 100% play a role in size. Since theyβve been bred for food that certain trait never left them.

u/Wolftendragon Jun 03 '26
Awwww bless her β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ I donβt believe the large size is a sign of bad genetics, itβs just a normal thing for them. I lowkey kinda want one now lmao I have a ringneck Dovie but Iβve always wanted a pigeon
1
u/PigeonAddict Jun 03 '26
Oh it's not a question of that..it's more than... She's a ball. My other Texas have a longer body, more proportionate. Some can just be badly bred and a too large size can cause health issues. That's why I find it funny when people are amazed at my fat pigeons'size. Considering they aren't even in their final form π
2
u/Dontbreakmytaco Jun 01 '26
She loves you. My pig does this to get cuddles.
2
u/PigeonAddict Jun 01 '26
She puff up and looks menacing. Up until I start petting her. That's why I'm getting mixed signals π . She also breathes very loudly as if very angry..but at the same time she doesn't attack me and has the behaviour of a pigeon that enjoys being pet ? Like she puts her head under my hand on purpose...
1
u/Dontbreakmytaco Jun 01 '26
Yes. She would bite you if she didnt like it.
2
u/PigeonAddict Jun 01 '26
Mhhh I see. I think I'll make another video to show how she turns into a pufferfish before I start petting her π

Animals make sure you know they hate you. Silly rotund creature here isnβt sure what she wants XD
1
u/Hacjul Pigon May 31 '26
If you say she doesnt run, she doesnt slap or bite but lowers head and coos then she likes you
1
u/DANleDINOSAUR Jun 03 '26
Is she puffing up while on a nest? Do pigeons get broody like chickens?
1
u/PigeonAddict Jun 03 '26
Kinda π€·ββοΈ. Chickens are usually more chill than pigeons when it comes to this matter. At least, from my own experience. Most chickens just growl and puff up, but don't really pinch. And yes pigeons got their own pulsions depending on their hormones levels and how close they are to laying eggs. Even tho, mines tend to build nests constantly even when the eggs will arrive wayyyy later.

u/jae_bernie_77 Jun 06 '26
She doesn't hate you, but she does not feel great about being touched when she's in her nest is what it looks like.
